Title: A long, stressful experience buying our Shepherds Hut

We purchased a Herdwick Shepherds Hut from Laing Timber Products in late August 2025, initially impressed by the craftsmanship and display models. Unfortunately, what started with great excitement turned into one of the most frustrating customer experiences we’ve ever had.

After paying over £36,000 in total, the delivery in December 2025 went badly wrong. The transport arranged by Laing’s couldn’t access the paddock, causing visible damage to the hut and leaving it in the wrong position. Many promised items and fittings were missing — including wheels, steps, guttering, sink, door, and basic interior fixtures — with no explanation or apology. We had to repair fences, hire equipment, and even move the hut ourselves while waiting for communication that rarely came.

Over the following weeks, we repeatedly chased updates and heard countless excuses. George Laing visited to assess the situation and made honest efforts to help, but the process was slow and chaotic. Promised fixes and parts often didn’t arrive, and several visits ended incomplete. Although some work was finally done in February 2026 — including installing a few missing items and connecting electrics — much of it was rushed, mismatched, or unfinished. Even in spring, we continued fixing issues ourselves, including electrical faults and damaged doors.

To be fair, some of Laing’s staff who came to site worked hard and were polite, but the overall project suffered from poor planning, lack of preparation, and inconsistent communication. The whole process was far more stressful and costly than it should ever have been.

We love the idea and design of the Shepherds Hut — it looks great now that we’ve finished what should have been completed on delivery — but sadly, we couldn’t recommend Laing Timber Products based on the experience we had.

Total Disappointment: Unacceptable Delays, Subpar Quality, and Frustrating Aftercare

I deeply regret my purchase from Laing Timber Products. While the pre-sale experience was patient and flexible with endless design options plus the pricing seemed fair, the service collapsed the moment payment was made.

The Major Failures:

Unusable for many months: It took around 8 weeks or more to get the drainage, boiler, and final positioning sorted. For a "ready-to-use" product, this delay is staggering.

Delayed deliveries: furnishings—mattress, fridge, microwave, blinds, chairs, steps to accsess the hut etc each item just took far too long to be delivered and installed

The whole process was a painfully long, endless chasing being ghosted for months on end and genuine feeling of saddness that a seemingly reputable company should act this way.

Build Quality & Weatherproofing: Living in the North of England, insulation is vital. They delivered the hut with uninsulated pipework and unsealed wood, requiring a full on-site repaint that should have been handled in the workshop.

Safety & Compliance: Most concerningly, they failed to provide an electrical certificate—a basic legal requirement—and delivered the unit with faulty taps, shower that burst at its seams and poorly fitted doors.

Throughout the process, I had to chase them constantly for missing parts and repairs. It was only after I threatened legal action that they began to take some responsibility, yet even then, the resolution was painfully slow and very rarely actually turning up when "scheduled" to come by.

The initial "patient" sales team vanished once they had my money, replaced by a complete lack of urgency and poor communication. Please do your due diligence and consider other options before committing to this company.
