Very disappointing experience with…
Very disappointing experience with iTalki. I was ready and waiting on time for my class, but the app kept showing the lesson would start “in 30 minutes” repeatedly. I tried both the Zoom link inside the app and the teacher’s link many times, but both showed as invalid. Due to this technical issue, I could not attend the class, yet I was still charged and my refund request was rejected. I do not recommend this platform based on my experience.

Great way to find a good teacher
I'm super happy with the teacher you found for me, love the platform and booking/lessons (have used both the italki platform and Zoom - both work well).
While I'd stress I found the eventual cost fair, my one comment would be that through currency issues, your multiple variable additions according to payment type and differing fees I incur from payment providers at my end, I had no clue what the overall cheapest way for me to pay would be! Why not pick an average fee to you, roll it into the hourly cost and simply present that to the customer in USD? I could then easily work out the best way to pay and my payment experience would be 100% more simple. Despite this minor point I love the site and would recommend due to the quality of the teacher I found. Keep up the good work!

Every lesson with Karen is a pleasure. She chooses interesting topics for us to discuss. During our lessons, she asks a variety of open ended questions, some simple so that the conversation flows, and others that are very difficult in order to challenge me to not just respond but also think in my target language. I appreciate that regardless of the topic, she is always careful to let me do the majority of speaking, since she knows this is the area I want to improve during our time together. Slow going and I'm progressing, I hope.
I continue slow progress in learning Hangul. My teacher is patient as I try to remember the individual sounds as well as combined to form words and sentences.

Customer service sucks …
My experience with the teachers was great, but with Italki itself not so much. Their placement tests are auto graded with no human input(even audio segments) and they refused to refund it inspite of me being a long time customer and them not disclosing that it was AI. Edit: they’ve reported my review and are trying to have it taken down unless I provide a bunch of personal info. This proves my point on how they move. From 3 stars to 1

Great Experience
I have had an amazing experience on iTalki, it is really helping with improving my language proficiency. Initially I was skeptical because the first tutor I had gave the app a bad first impression but once I found the right tutor it's been amazing from there!

Great teachers, find your fit!
I did a thorough review of potential teachers (profiles, countries, and reviews) and all 3 I’ve tried have been very high quality. I’m now five lessons in and I’ve found the fit I’ve been looking for! The Italki payment system is easy to use and the platform is providing me an engaging and enjoyable way to progress toward my language learning goals. While I’m learning Spanish, it seems Italki has such a breadth of languages covered, including teachers on the platform who teach Somali (the third most commonly spoken language at a health center I used to work at)!

Unfair Billing Practices and Unresponsive Customer Support! Avoid!
I started a 1-month free trial with italki on April 13, but the app charged my credit card the full subscription fee immediately on day one instead of waiting for the trial to end on May 14.
I contacted their customer support during the trial period to cancel and request a refund. However, they completely ignored my emails and delayed the response for weeks until the actual subscription period officially started. Because italki charged me prematurely, Google Play's automated system rejected my refund request, claiming the 48-hour window from the "charge date" had passed.
This is a complete technical trap and unfair billing practice. italki has the authority to refund this via their Google Play Console but they refuse to answer. I have paid for a service I never intended to buy and never used. Unacceptable customer service!

Léa, you completely misunderstood the situation. I DID try to cancel and request a refund DURING the trial period. The problem is NOT that I forgot to cancel. The problem is that your system charged my card the full fee on Day 1 (April 13) instead of waiting for the trial to end on May 14.
Because you charged me prematurely, Google's automated system locked me out, thinking the 48-hour window had passed. I was proactively trying to cancel while inside the trial, but your early-charge glitch trapped my money.
Do not give me copy-paste answers telling me to turn off auto-renew. Check my support ticket history. I want my refund processed via your Google Play Console, which your finance team has full authority to do. Ticket Number: #1063006

Good teachers
Once you find a teach you connect with the experience is great. The video chat can be unreliable at times so you have to use Zoom or something, and there are annoying AI features shoehorned in because hype. But the important part about the teachers is there.
