An enjoyable, comprehensive and flexible course that empowers the new photographer.

I found this course informative and well structured. As there was no time restriction for completion it suited my needs down to the ground as I can't always access the internet when I'm abroad which is quite a lot. The practice assignments are fun and structured well to ensure progression. When I contacted my tutor he replied promptly making me feel as if i mattered. Great value for money and lots of opportunities to get feedback from tutor and other students! I have learned a lot which is developing my confidence as i am able to work independently at times to suit myself.

A full and comprehensive course.

The course has covered all aspects of photography in a non-stressful way. There have been no time limits and I have been able to progress at my own speed. I have learnt a lot and gained confidence to try things that I had always thought were beyond my capabilities. The course has exceeded my expectations and I have enjoyed it fully,

All we can ask for is that we help to improve your photography. If we have done this, we have achieved what we set out to achieve when IOP started. Thanks so much for this review.

I am now proud of my photography!

Since starting the Institute of Photography's Diploma in Photography, I have learned so much about the art. I have ventured out and tried many different aspects of photography that I never even knew existed. I have had fun experimenting with putting together panoramas and using exposure creatively to create HDR images. This course was easy to access and follow, and I loved that I could work through it in my own time. I would definitely use the IOP again and would recommend it to anyone else. I am so proud of some of the work I have produced, and this wouldn't have happened without the materials, support and feedback from this course.

easy to understand

A great course for anyone new to digital photography, who wants to get the most out of their DSLR camera.
The course is easy to use and very well written.
The course doesn't bog you down in jargon, with each section helping you too understand the different controls and settings found on the camera.
A nice touch is the frequent tips throughout for getting the best pictures.

Good Course to get you started.

Even though i had been into serious photography for around 2 years ,i enrolled on the course to sharpen my skills & make sure i hadn't picked up any bad habits. Its similar in a way to learning to drive you get to learn the basics ,pass the course then your free to go out into the world & develop your own style with a good foundation. Highly recommended course with good instructor & a welcoming forum.

Snap to it and become a better photographer

Information which was well organised with helpful suggestions to try out. Written for a beginner to understand. Great to progress at ones own pace and to be able to revisit each unit for clarification. The multiple choice questions at the end of each unit reinforced learning. No pressure to submit images until the assessment stage. However any images submitted are viewed and suggestions for improvement given. The weekly online chat forum is a great way to have contact with the tutor. The tutor always responded to any emails sent at other times. I have enjoyed the process and feel confident when using my camera. This has given me a new hobby in my retirement and gives me a reason to go outdoors and learn more about the natural world. Would recommend the course those seeking a new career or like me a new and exciting hobby.
Thank you

WARNING - USE THE COURSE OR LOSE IT WITHOUT WARNING

I started the basic course shortly after buying it, but due to personal reasons I didn't continue. One year later (to the day) I had an e-mail sent to me saying that my course had now expired and there would be an admin. charge to reinstate it. After a few e-mail exchanges I realised they had no sympathy for my case and left it at that.
However being a proactive person I suggested that they gave users at least a weeks warning before the year was up. Their response was that this was technically not possible. However it seems technically possible to e-mail me to the day after a year of inactivity.
Take your conclusions.

Hello Jeff. We cannot find a student called Jeff who was emailed exactly 365 days after they first logged in.
We would like to respond with the following two points:

1. We do give warning that you must log in at least once every 12 months to keep your account active. We tell you in the T&Cs very prominently and we do ask you to check a box to state you have read them before you are allowed to enrol. We also mention this in the course information when you log in. We also mention this in our FAQs and finally, we mention it in our welcome email.

2. IOP offer one of the most generous course completion times available. We do not say that you have to finish the course in 6 months or even 12 months as is the industry standard. We give unlimited time to complete, providing you log in once every 12 months. We feel this is extremely generous.

We would just like to say that we work very hard to make sure we have happy customers. It is our biggest priority and I am sorry you felt we did not explain our policy more clearly.

Please get in touch with our Course Manager and we can take the time to explain further. Simply email us and tell us who you are and the Course Manager will get in touch direct.

Overall good, just a few instances of the content needing to be improved with better wording.

Diploma in Photography course

The course was easy to use and easy to access. I was able to complete the course at my own pace, some days completing multiple modules and other times not going back for weeks.

The course covers a lot of areas at a basic level and is a good introduction to photography. Some of the content needs to be written in a better way, occasionally the wrong terminology was used, or answer statements were ambiguous.

Overall the course was good and delivered what I expected :)

Thanks for leaving such a positive review. We have considered the three points you have raised in your direct feedback to us and the tutor has sent you a long email explaining the theory in more depth. Although you have completed the course, if you ever need any other photography help, we would be delighted to provide it.

A really good approach for the absolute beginner and technically challenged!

I was born on the cusp of the computer age. I didn't have opportunity to jump on the boat in the early days. Learning now is really confusing! I'm delighted that IOP presents information in a way that even I can understand. I have learned a grasp of my camera and basic photography that I didn't believe was possible. If I can only learn to understand my computer, I will be able to move forward with photography as a business. I understand manipulating photos on editing programs, but something as simple as moving pictures from one file to another or onto a memory stick boggles me. I've got friends still waiting for me to load their pics onto sticks!

Thanks, IOP, for the start! I would consider another course after I embrace my computer.

Good theory, lacks practical marked assignments

If you need an academic understanding of camera's and their working then this is the course for you. If you are expecting your work to be critiqued on a practical project you will be sorely disappointed. Probably great for beginners and gives you a sound understanding but we all want our photographs to be looked at and great advice given don't we?

Hello Rob, thanks for taking the time to review our course.
We are glad you appreciated the in-depth modules and we wanted to say that there are a number of ways you can submit your photos for critique. Just pop back on to the course platform and you can email your tutor direct from there and join the very active forums.
Also, you can take our Advanced Diploma in Photography where you have 7 photos scored and given very in-depth critique.
Thanks for taking our course and we hope you will consider further courses with us.
Best wishes,
IOP

Easy to access and full of information

I enjoyed the fact you are not limited to a time frame to study so it can be fitted in around everything else. I thought there was a lot of useful information provided broken down into units so you can easily go back to access any information. You can retake any unit tests again so isn't a problem if you don't remember
from reading it first time round. It can also be be accessed on my smartphone so you're not restricted to studying at a desk or laptop.

I knew nothing, i now feel so much more confident with my camera!

Having completed this course I now feel I am much more confident in my ability to take good photographs. I found the way the information was given to me was very easy to take in and it just seemed to stick in my brain. I started with a problem viewing the videos but 1 email to my tutor got a very prompt response and I was sorted and on my way. I highly recommend this course if you are an amateur and want to improve your skills greatly. The part on HDR photography was particularly interesting to me and I have already got myself some HDR software and love the results that I have seen so far. Fantastic!
