Hong Kong Insurance Complaints Bureau didn't help me

The Hong Kong Insurance Complaints Bureau (ICB) claims to be an independent and trusted body to the Hong Kong insuring public in resolving disputes with HK insurance companies. They say they aim to be impartial, efficient, and user-friendly with respect to all parties.

However, the Insurance Complaints Bureau has not helped me when I complained about my insurance company refusing to pay my claim. They supported the insurance company despite me giving very good reasons why I did not know I had heart trouble well ahead of a heart attack. They are entitled to do that as long as they explain their decision properly. But their explanation was vague and did little more than repeat what the insurance company said, largely ignoring the important points I submitted to them. This has left me owing SG$62,500(about US$49,000) to a Singapore hospital that saved my life.

I tried to challenge the ICB a few times repeating the points supporting my claim and demanding proper answers which they have a duty to do if I do not qualify for an insurance payout. But ICB repeatedly avoided answering and instead kept insulting me with vague replies no better than an insurance company that doesn’t want to pay. This has left me doubting that they are even impartial.

It appears the ICB in Hong Kong are not answerable to anyone. The Insurance Authority, Ombudsman, Consumer Council and HK Government are all unable to investigate complaints against the ICB. They can do as they wish without any scrutiny
