NOT TO BE TRUSTED !!!

As to many others, Hertz Netherlands came out to be a total scam and theft to me.
The frontwindow of a brandnew car cracked on a highway. I called Hertz and no action was needed. Nevertheless I took the car to Volvo cars and to Carglass to investigate, 5 (!!) experts confirmed this was caused by tension in the frontwindow and definitley NOT by external means ( stone or bird). I called Hertz for the 3 rd time and they assured me no action was needed and the collector at the airport would have a look at it. I took the car in early so an expert could be called. The Hertz collector confirmed right away this crack was caused by tension and released my Creditcard. Since then I have been harassed by Hertz NL damage for a claim of 1200 euro's. Sending aggressive emails , inclusive claims from an international money collector. going on for 9 ( !!!) months now . I tried to telephone them many times to NO AVAIL. BLAME ON YOU, SHAME ON YOU.

Straight up theft

Do not, under any circumstances, hire a car from Hertz Netherlands. Woman on the desk at Schipol was rude, aggressive and actually smiled at the level of my inconvenience. Did not provide the car I paid for, no response when I phoned them, having blown a couple of tyres, deducted petrol costs although car returned with a full tank (They did credit the amount) and worst of all, slugged me with double the cost of the hire period, which I had paid for in full before leaving Australia. Net cost per day was around $200, which is outrageous. Fraudulent, misleading, dishonest thieves. Have taken the matter to Fair Trading. Avoid these Dutch shysters at all costs

If I could give zero stars

If I could give zero stars, I would.

Hertz Amsterdam Overtoom 333 gave us a car that broke down in 20 minutes with a “Check Injection / Engine Failure” warning — and then ignored over 30 phone calls. The voucher they issued had the wrong name, wrong license plate and wrong car, so roadside assistance couldn’t even locate us.

We were told “someone is coming,” but no one ever came.
I had to take a €50 taxi to the branch myself just to fix their mistakes.

After hours in the cold, a technician confirmed the car was not repairable. The replacement was a completely different category (a Volvo sedan instead of the Peugeot 5008 we paid for). Then Hertz told us we actually had to return it to Amsterdam, destroying our entire schedule.

We lost the whole day, including €300 in Efteling tickets, and spent hours without water, restrooms, or proper support.

And the worst part?
When I filed a claim, I discovered there is no functioning customer service number, no assistance, and Hertz still charged the full amount AND the deposit without justification.

Unsafe, unprofessional, and absolutely unacceptable.
Avoid Hertz at all costs.

14/11/2025-17/11/2025

Date of rental: 14/11/2025 – 17/11/2025
Location: Hertz, Amsterdam Schiphol Airport

This has been the worst car rental experience of my life.

When we arrived at Schiphol Airport after a late flight on the 14th of November, we went to Hertz around 11 PM. The male customer service agent who assisted us was aggressive, rude, and completely unhelpful. His attitude alone should disqualify him from working in customer service.

We were suddenly told we needed to pay a €760 deposit, something that was never communicated in advance. Ir were paying an additional €90 to have lower depodit “coverage” fee for 3 days and psud €90 to cover , again without proper explanation. It felt like the staff member was taking advantage of the situation, knowing we were tired from travel and had limited options at that hour.

Afterwards, he sent us to the car collection area without any clear instructions, and we struggled for nearly 20 minutes to locate the vehicle. When we finally found it, the car was in poor mechanical condition, making a loud cracking/grinding sound whenever changing gears. I was uncomfortable and did not feel safe driving it.

, I returned the car early, on 17/11/2025 @5:45 a.m Despite that, I was still charged: €29 “location fee”

€129 fuel charge, even though the tank was not full at pickup and the same male staff member wrongly told us it was full. I even have a photo proving it was not full when we received it.

To make things even worse, we were told the deposit would take one month to be refunded completely unreasonable and unacceptable.

This entire experience was a rip off, filled with hidden charges, a bad vehicle, and some of the rudest, most unprofessional staff I have ever encountered. I will never use Hertez in the airpirt again and strongly advise others to avoid this location.

Don't rent with Hertz

I've rented a car. First of all the car was hard to find. After bringing the car back I was charged for some damage. But I didn't have any accident. And there is no way to connect to the company for details. No support at all.

I have been using Hertz many many times this year. In July they have deducted an amount from my bank account for a fine infringement that was not even me... I have sent the proof to Hertz already in July. After sending many many emails to Hertz they have not responded even once. What Pathetic autoverhuur is this!!

Very bad experience, they charge much more then you book

I booked a car for 193,09 for 5 days and when the rental was charged to my credit card, it turned out to be 311,97, even though we didn't incur any damage. Hertz cannot be reached for this, I have sent several emails without one answer, and when you call them you only get computers on the line. Very bad experience !! You can't trust Hertz that is for sure!!

Theives.

Stole £450 because they had to vacuum 4 floor mats. Despite saying they clean all cars between rentals.

Avoid Hertz at all costs.

The rental is way too greedy beyond imagination. It was highly rated on Expedia, so I went with it. Firstly, I booked a car with full insurance, then I needed to change the collection time. The booking was not changeable, so I cancelled it and rebooked again. This should get a full refund with full insurance based on their T&C, but they charged a cancellation fee of £30 regardless. After the rental, I received an invoice of £130 for 20Lof fuel plus £12 fuel service. When I requested a clarification via Expedia, I discovered a double charge of insurance that I had already paid for with my booking. This company is a bit of a joke. Avoid Hertz at all costs.

Car hire at Schiphol

I don't know what all these negative reviews are about but I had an excellent experience at Schiphol. The car was hired through Dollar but seeing as Hertz service their bookings and it was only Hertz people I dealt with I thought this review should go to them. Service from check-in to check-out was excellent and without any issues. The people were friendly and helpful. Perhaps people have different experiences at different locations but if people take care to plan their journies carefully and make sure they understand all the booking details and document requirements then car hire should be a hassle free experience. Mine was at least.

Careful a lot of hidden fees

Hi, I booked a car with Hertz through an online car rental portal and paid 50 euros for a one-day rental. However, after returning the car in perfect condition and on time, they sent a final invoice charging an additional 60 euros, citing various unjustified fees that were never mentioned or agreed upon. In total, I ended up paying 110 euros for just 24 hours. I will never book with this company again!

A huge scam. AVOID.

Rented from the Leiden location August 23-26. The absolute worst. Had a nice weekend in the Belgian countryside, and returned the car on Monday morning. On Sunday we noticed that the fender flare and bumper cover on one side of the rear of the car was coming loose. We had no incidents while driving, and this is a known issue with Priuses. We dutifully reported what we saw to the Hertz agent when we returned the car. The agent also noticed a scratch on the alloy hubcap (nothing major and could easily be buffed out). He immediately whisked the car away "to the garage" and said "Sunny Cars will contact you." (We did not even know we would be dealing with Hertz when we rented the car, as we rented with Sunny Cars). Instead, Hertz attempted to charge my credit card 1414 euros the next day. Yes, 1414 EUROS! With no invoice or communication. I eventually did pay a few days later and was reimbursed 1414 euros by Sunny Cars (luckily). However, Hertz is still sending me threatening mail saying I owe them 1642 euros (as they are still withholding my 200 euro damage deposit, which Sunny Cars says is "in error"). Over the last month I have spent so much energy and time dealing with this joke of a company and their scam. DO NOT RENT WITH HERTZ IN THE NETHERLANDS!!

Do not hire a car from Hertz Eindhoven Airport!

We hired a car at Eindhoven Airport. It was supposed to be cleaned, however, there were marks on the drivers seat and the car was not clean and it had damage on the front bumper. We reported it to the office before taking the car away. Upon return we gave the keys to a member of staff in the office and was told that was all that was required. The following day we received the invoice and was charged Euros plus VAT for specialist cleaning. A photo was attached which showed a picture of tarmac and a white line. We sent an email disputing the charge and sent timed and dated photos that we took of the car seat initially which was not clean. We should have received a reply from Hertz within 10 days, but this did not happen. In order to obtain a refund we had to go through our Bank. Hertz say that they provide an unforgettable experience, this was the case, but for the wrong reasons!

€1000 charge for a car returned in perfect condition

Short version of the reason for my poor review:
1 year after returning a car in perfect conditions, Hertz is still trying to charge us €1000 through a dept agency - even after loosing a dispute on the original charge.

Now the longer version:
About a year ago, my boyfriend and I booked a car with Hertz. We got a flat tire so we used the emergency one, and then got it professionally replaced with the same brand. We returned the car in perfect condition - one would have never known anything had happened to it - but of course we told Hertz we had to replace a tire (which we paid for btw).

A few days later, we received a charge of about €1000 to our credit card, the full excess. Since we returned the car with no damage and a brand new wheel, we contested this through our bank. We won the dispute. Regardless of this, Hertz has been continuously been trying to charge us for it, also through a dept collection agency. Throughout the process, reaching out to anyone from their customer service has also been a nightmare.

The latest development. Even though my boyfriend and I decided to never use Hertz again, we had to use them recently on one occasion - mistake… We booked and prepaid online, and only after arriving at our pick-up point and going through the whole process, they said the driving license was blocked on their systems. Please note that no one had ever informed us that the driving license was going to be blocked, nor that it had been.

They said it could be unlocked, but it wouldn’t happen on the same day. This started a huge chain of issues and we ended up spending the 1st day of our holiday in the airport, trying to find an alternative (thank you Avis 🙌 which was also half the price). Once we returned home, we decided to unlock the license, in case we ever wanted to use Hertz again in the future.

Upon inquiring, it turned out that the reason the driving license was blocked was that they believe we still owe them €1000 - even though the original car was returned in perfect condition AND that we won the dispute over it!

So this has not only cost us countless hours of back and forths, calls with our bank and all the admin required, but also now an entire day of holiday spent in an airport trying to - once again - solve this. Needless to say, we have now both swore off of them.

Honestly, do yourself a favour and stay away from Hertz and their sub-brands. Worth spending a bit more for another company (even if often they’re actually the more expensive option…).

out of hours fee

My flight was delayed, 1 hour 45 minutes, when I received the delay information at the departing airport, I contacted Hertz (Eindhoven airport)to inform them about the situation, (as it was in the instruction of the booking). They suggested two options: Option 1- one of the staff member can wait for me and hand over the key personally but then an out of hours delivery fee (60 euros) will be charged OR Option 2- I sent my documents via email, the contract will be prepared and left it with the keys at the hotel reception of the terminal hotel. I have chosen Option 2.

Even though, nobody had to stay out of hours, I have been charged with the fee and only was aware of the fee when I received the invoice.

When I challenged the fee, they only replied that the system charges the fee automatically. I am sure they can overwrite the system for a reason!?

They try to skim more money everywhere!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!!

We rented a medium car and paid around £185. We arrived at Eindhoven at 14:30 ish and apparently needed a credit card to secure the car for 240€ we did not see anything in the email saying this and apparently it says it in the terms and conditions where I would never look as it’s really hard to find if they didn’t show us. So, anyway they maid us try find a solution for 4 hours. Give us a panic attack on how we are going to make it to the holtel!! Then they decide to help after 4 hours and we got the car but, the car was quite a big car than we originally booked. I will not recommend this company on any platform I own!! They also changed the price every time we were trying to pay from out the credit cards. They said 240€ then 200€ then 360€ then 345€ and ended up taking 200€. They were very unhelpful and made our start of holiday terrible. We were hungry and thirsty for 4 hours as we were trying to figure out how to do the payment. We asked cash or debit but not accepted. As it was a Sunday I couldn’t transfer money to my UK bank. Horrible experience!!! We didn’t get our refund for 21 days. Me and my friends emailed them so many times I have proof of everything. This was a terrible experience NEVER EVER RECOMMENDED!!!

Volvo XC40 via Hertz Amsterdam Schiphol / secret extra cost and extra credit cards !!!

I rented a car Volvo XC40 via the booking platform check24.de and paid for the Premium Car. The price was good and I was happy to pick up the car. At the Hertz Schiphol pickup location, the service person told me, I can't get my booked car doing I needed two credit cards for it.

This point wasn't in the booking conditions and so I got a different standard car.

Doing the rent process I had to sign for current damages and old ones, without seeing them on the car. The service person told me only, you get a mail with the damages. That's no transparency for me how I expect it !

On top, I had to pay and extra cost for 30,00 Euro crossing the borders fee (secret extra cost). Was wasn't in the booking condition. But if I didn't pay, I had no car.

On the car, it was very hard to get in, doing they parked the car to close to each other and I had to climb to reach out the driving seat.

After a check, the car wasn't clean and also for this time, the vehicle had only summer tires. Doing this point I had to change my plans and couldn't stay in the German Bavarian mountains in this autumn winter weather and it is also against the German mandatory law!

In the end I am not happy about the booking with this rent company. I expect a better quality service oriented customer friendly service.

Never again Hertz, other companies are better and I will avoid this company.

Hertz can't be trusted

I usually rent cars in Amsterdam. For the second time (an the last) I rented with Hertz. And for the second time Hertz Overtoom is charging me for a small scratch removable by wax that they told me it was dirty when I picked up the car. They also gave me wrong information about refuel when I picked the car. Take care and don't rent with Hertz.
