EUROWINGS: A Worthy Contender for the Bottom of the Barrel

Until the day before yesterday, I lived under the impression that Volotea was the absolute worst airline in Europe (lest we forget when, during the pandemic, they sold tickets for flights they’d cancel the very next day). However, as of yesterday, Eurowings has emerged as a truly worthy contender for this dubious title.

The "Hidden" Luggage Trap
I booked a flight from Hamburg to Malpensa via Booking.com. After checking in the day before departure, I received a boarding pass that cryptically read "GROUP 3," offering zero details regarding luggage. On the day of the flight, I cleared security two hours early, only to realize by pure chance—less than an hour before boarding—that my hand luggage wasn't actually included.

I approached a Eurowings desk to ask how I might remedy my "mistake." The staff member replied with the kind of rudeness usually reserved for mortal enemies, snapped that she wasn’t responsible for my flight, and told me to wait. When I insisted on information, she checked my pass with visible annoyance and "confirmed" that my only option was to pay a €60 fine at the gate, as going back through security would mean definitely missing the flight.

The App "Miracle"
Discouraged, I checked the app myself and discovered that for a mere €29, I could simply upgrade to GROUP 2 and bring the bag. So, the ground staff’s "information" was not only inaccurate but seemingly designed to bait me into a more expensive penalty. I paid for the upgrade—without receiving a digital receipt, naturally—and tried to convince myself that the ordeal was my own fault. I was being far too generous.

Boarding Incompetence
I joined the boarding queue, which was handled with staggering inefficiency. The gate was supposed to close at 5:55 p.m., yet most passengers were still standing in line at that time. When I scanned my pass, the automatic gate threw an error. The boarding agent grilled me to "understand" the problem until a colleague intervened, explaining that the system simply couldn't handle the upgrade I’d just made. He finally let me through to the corridor.

"Captain’s Orders" and Other Logical Fallacies
We were all boarded by the 6:10 p.m. departure time, but instead of taking off, we just sat there. No explanation was provided, and the few announcements made were exclusively in German. We finally lurched into the sky at 6:29 p.m.

About an hour in, while I was minding my own business with an audiobook, a flight attendant—wearing the same gloves she’d been using to collect trash—suddenly tapped my shoulder. Since I had earphones in, I didn’t hear her, so she repeated herself in a harsh, drill-sergeant tone: “Electronic devices must be turned off, orders from the captain!”

I showed her I was switching it off, but since my phone is a bit older and slower, she lost patience and shouted the order again in German. She hovered over me like a warden until she was satisfied the screen was black. (Perhaps I should have offered to blow the phone up for extra safety?)

She then moved on to harass others, though I couldn't help but notice a few logical gaps in her mission:

The crew was using tablets—active electronic devices—to process snack payments. Are they exempt from the laws of physics?

Eurowings advertises onboard Wi-Fi for their multimedia. How exactly does one access Wi-Fi on a powered-down phone?

The businessman in the suit and the "influencer" with the fake extensions next to me simply slid their active phones into their pockets. The attendant conveniently went "blind" for them. Apparently, "Captain's Orders" only apply to passengers who look like they’re traveling on a budget.

The Grand Finale
We finally touched down at Malpensa at 8:20 p.m.—a cool 25 minutes late—and the deplaning process took an eternity. I didn't reach the car park until 8:45 p.m.

Moral of the story: EUROWINGS: NEVER AGAIN.

Flying with pet and force to purchase a new carrier the airport staff arbitrarily and subjectively decided tgat my carrier wasn’t good enough

They have the most ridiculous prices and the worst client attention services.

I was traveling with my pet, and after fully complying with all the guidelines published on your website — including the maximum dimensions and approved format for pet carriers — the airport staff arbitrarily and subjectively decided that my carrier was not “suitable” or “comfortable enough” for the animal. This decision, based solely on personal opinion, forced me to make an emergency purchase of a new carrier at the airport. The Eurowings staff at the airport not only made me purchase a new carrier but they did the same with everyone else in the line flying with their pet on the same day (surreal)

The new carrier, aside from not matching Eurowings’ official specifications any better than the original one, turned out to be unsuitable for the assigned cabin space, as it did not even fit under the seat as required by your own regulations. This made the flight extremely uncomfortable and even painful, as I was unable to position my pet properly or sit normally for almost three hours.

What hurt the most, however, was not only the financial and practical harm but also the treatment I received from your staff, which was aggressive, dismissive, and entirely lacking in empathy. At no point was I allowed to explain my situation or demonstrate that my original carrier met the required dimensions. I felt completely defenseless, humiliated, and deprived of any reasonable solution.

In addition, this incident caused significant delays and nearly made me miss my flight — all due to an unfounded and unverified decision based purely on subjective judgment rather than objective criteria or technical basis.

I have file several complaints over email, all i get are vague answers, apologies that they mean and no real solution.

If you have the chance to choose do not choose them.

Flight cancelled and automatically…

Flight cancelled and automatically rebooked to a different city about 700km away with 4.5hr layover. When I wanted to cancel they offered me 34$ (original price of my airfare was over 600$). Just terrible, will never use Eurowings again

Lying for money

If you travel with more than one piece of luggage, I can only recommend avoiding Eurowings. Booked the Smart Tariff with one bag and two pieces of hand baggage. When checking in I was told I could only have one piece of hand baggage. When I showed my confirmation of booking they did not care. Afterwards I formally complained on their website, so they straight up lied to me and said my bags were too big (although they did not measure them once). Wasted £51 and there’s nothing I can do about it.

I’m truly disappointed..

I’m truly disappointed..
What I booked was a BIZclass, but the whole airplane has economy seats, but that “BIZclass” only meant that you get to sit in the front and have extra baggage (which is the only thing I’m thankful for). However, there’s no tv in front of every seat, so you are doomed if you have a long flight and your battery dies, in addition, no food served, only bought.
Furthermore, I kept contacting the support team but they never replied.
Do I recommend it? Absolutely not.
Will I book again? Probably but only for the weight I will get to have.

It's been a good airline

Eurowings used to be a good airline, with reasonable prices. Lately, however, it feels like they’re trying to move towards a Ryanair-style model. Prices may look fine at first glance, but once you look closer, they often aren’t.
I frequently travel between Hamburg and London, and on several occasions I’ve seen very inconsistent handling of cabin baggage at the gate. While I’ve never been affected myself, enforcement of the hand luggage rules feels arbitrary: some passengers are singled out and charged extra, while others with clearly oversized bags are waved through. This regularly causes arguments during boarding and makes the experience unpleasant for everyone. It’s questionable whether the extra revenue is worth that disruption.
On this route, I now mostly fly British Airways instead. Surprisingly, it’s often cheaper, includes a drink and a snack, and allows two pieces of cabin baggage — resulting in a far more relaxed experience overall.

Avoid at all costs.

Avoid at all costs.

Customer service is virtually non-existent. We were unable to check in online due to a so-called “technical error” and were instructed to contact the check-in counter on the day of departure.

At the airport, we were informed that the issue was not technical at all—the airline had oversold the flight. All economy seats were gone, despite the fact that we had booked our tickets months in advance.

We were told that third-party travel agencies also sell their tickets and that if you don’t pay an extra fee to reserve a seat, your seat may be sold to someone else. This feels like pure blackmail—forcing passengers to pay extra just to keep the seat they already paid for.

I had to argue extensively just to get assistance. We were extremely lucky that there were four seats left in business class; otherwise, we would have missed the flight entirely. Even then, we were required to pay additional money to be seated there.

Poor customer service, no accountability, and a company that seems focused solely on maximizing revenue rather than taking care of its customers.

TREATED LIKE ANIMALS!!! TERRIBLE!!!

Not even worth 1 star!!!
We were treated like animals. The woman at the baggage check-in was extremely aggressive and spoke in a way that made it difficult for us to understand her. When I politely asked her to repeat what she said, she started shouting even louder.

I then repeated to my husband what she had shouted at us, using the same tone of voice she used. Immediately after that, she denied us access to the flight and refused to let us board.

This behavior was completely unprofessional and unacceptable.

We asked for the manager but nobody helped us. TERRIBLE!!!

Really can’t fault them

Flew from Newcastle to Dusseldorf, air crew were great. Unfortunately the system let it down and we had to check in at the airport but over all it didn’t sully the experience. I would not hesitate to fly with them again, which is handy as I need to get home 🤣

Scamming with online check-in not available

I do my best to avoid Eurowings whenever possible. They have the worst customer service I have ever experienced—and these are not isolated incidents. I’ve had to deal with the same problems multiple times myself.

Massive delays seem to be the norm, boarding is often chaotic, and the cabin crew regularly appears unqualified and unprofessional. I’ve missed connecting flights due to their delays, received no compensation, and was left to sort out overnight accommodation on my own.

The latest incident really takes the cake. Eurowings charges €20 if you don’t check in online, yet very often the online check-in is simply not available. You are forced to pay and then try to resolve it with customer service afterward. When I did exactly that, they demanded proof. I provided a screenshot clearly showing that online check-in was unavailable—yet they claimed this was not sufficient evidence.

This feels like a blatant scam they are now running on a regular basis. Avoid this airline if you value your time, money, and sanity.

Avoid Eurowings by all costs!

First and Last time I fly with these misleading crooks. They maybe low cost but they will still slap you with extra charges where it isn't that different to other airlines. Have you ever heard of an airline giving you less than the standard 23kg baggage allowance? I was made to pay an £20 to check in a bag assuming it would be the 23kg (it wasn't made clear during the booking was) no problem. Once I received the confirmation, it then stated 12kg allowance, to try and book additional allowance online was impossible knowing at the airport would be more expensive. I made a complaint which I'm yet to receive a response. At the airport my bag was 20kg. 8kg over the allowed weight, so I was made to pay an extra £80... Criminal! So for a 20kg bag I had to pay an extra £100 on top of the price of the ticket, disgusting! They should be ashamed of themselves. Let's see if they have any shame and respond to my complaint.
