Europcar refused a prebooked car hire and left me stranded as it wouldn't accept my entirely valid photo UK licence in Germany.

Every other company was happy with UK licence but didn't have cars left.

When I was charged by police for over speeding because in a 20km/h limit and I was driving 23 km/h. I was charged 25 euro fine which I paid to Police but this company will also charge you for some ridiculous reasons in the name processing fee which I do not accept as a valid service fee for a fine I have paid and settled directly with traffic police. Hope you do not fall in their scam.

Never trust Europcar with your creditcard!AVOID!!

I had a very frustrating experience with Europcar car rental company. When I returned the car at their centre in Salzburg airport, I was explicitly told that there were no additional payments to be made. However, I was shocked to later see that I was charged nearly €200 for cleaning, despite the fact that I had thoroughly cleaned the car before returning it and there was no mention or in the contract about any cleaning charges.

What made the situation even worse was that they didn't inspect the car in my presence, even though I specifically requested it. It felt like they took advantage of the situation and slapped on an unfair charge without any justification.

It’s incredibly frustrating when a company gives you false assurances and then tries to impose arbitrary fees without transparency or accountability. I won’t be using this rental service again and would advise others to be very cautious before renting from Europcar & contact your credit card company after the rental return to put a block if possible or they take it for granted.

Illegitimate “damage” charges

The car was only inspected by an Europcar employee upon return, in which he declared that a new scratch had appeared that was not there before our use. The inspector asked for a video that we were theoretically supposed to make of the surface of the car upon our arrival but at that time, it had never been suggested to us! He said, without the video you have no proof- our bad luck. The thing is, even if filming a surface of a rental car is what everyone is doing these days, without telling us to do so first, it seems really slimey to demand a video at the end of our trip. Anyway, we would have noticed if this one of many scratches already on the car had appeared on our trip. It didn’t but we can’t prove it and there was no one to talk to upon our returning the car to the airport except the colleagues of this one inspector employee who were equally indifferent and not willing to give us useful information other than to say, “You don’t sign now, you gonna pay more later.” Great. So at the end of our trip we had to pay an extra 240€ for a scratch that we are not responsible for and can’t do anything about.
Europcar = never again

Overcharged, refusing to provide detail

Overcharged, they refuse to provide invoice with the detail, still trying to claim or even understand why were the additional charges incurred. I thought that having an invoice for the service was a legal right, apparently does not apply for Europcar. Is it too much asking knowing what you are charged for?

AVOID (if You Value Transparency and Fairness)

I recently rented a car from Europcar at Glasgow Airport, and the experience has been nothing short of a nightmare. What started as a straightforward rental quickly turned into a drawn-out, frustrating experience, with Europcar attempting to charge me €400 for alleged "damage" to the vehicle—damage that simply did not exist.

Refusal to Conduct Proper Inspection: When I picked up the car, the agent outright refused to inspect the vehicle with me, brushing off visible pre-existing damage and insisting that "anything under 15 cm doesn’t count." This was a major red flag, and one that I should have heeded more seriously.

Unfounded Damage Claims: Upon returning the vehicle, I filmed the car from every angle, clearly showing that it was in the same condition as when I received it. Europcar, however, claims there is damage to the front left tyre, yet refuses to provide clear, conclusive evidence. The video I provided shows nothing because, quite simply, there was no damage to see.

Questionable Business Practices: Despite multiple attempts to contest these charges with solid evidence, Europcar has continued to push forward with the invoice, relying on vague statements and deflecting responsibility. This pattern of behavior feels exploitative, and from my research, it’s clear I’m not alone in this experience.

A Pattern of Deception: This incident mirrors previous bad experiences I’ve had with rental companies in Glasgow, like Green Motion, where I was blatantly scammed. It seems this trend of dubious charges and refusal to engage in good faith customer service is rampant in this location, and Europcar has now joined that list.

Final Verdict: If you value transparency, accountability, and fair treatment, avoid Europcar. The time and stress I’ve invested into contesting these baseless charges have been exhausting, and I’m left questioning how a company of this scale can operate with such disregard for honest customer interactions.

Recommendation: Don’t take the risk. Look elsewhere for a rental company that values integrity over hidden charges and customer exploitation.

Avoid Europe Cars (Stuttgart to Munich)…

Avoid Europe Cars (Stuttgart to Munich) - Hidden Charges and Poor Service

I had an awful experience with Europe Cars on my trip from Stuttgart to Munich. They are incredibly unhelpful and dishonest, with hidden charges that only surface after you've completed your journey. They hit you with unexpected fees that were never mentioned upfront, and when you try to address it, their customer service is unresponsive and unhelpful. I was charged much more than I was originally quoted, and they failed to inform me of these additional costs beforehand. If you're thinking of using Europe Cars, I strongly recommend you reconsider. They are not transparent and will leave you with hefty, unexpected charges

Nobody is perfect...?

Nobody is perfect, but the one at Airport Stuttgart STR/EDDS nearly is. Almost everyone was super friendly and helpful, they accept VatForms (the date of issue has to be BEFORE renting/pick-up the car!), are easy to reach and the payments and handling are very easy as well. Being a member of ADAC usually gives you an opportunity for a better deal. I can warmly recommend the station.

A scam

A scam: I rented a car for very cheap for 2 days, when I arrived to pick it up, I ask how I could do to return it, because my flight was very early in the morning. the employee told me not to worry that I could do the key drop. He gave me a car that was way nicer than the one I had booked and I got suspicious, so I took picture as there were some damages and I didn't wanted them to charge me for that. I went home I parked it in the garage, and two day after I went back to the airport. 10 days after I got the invoice for the amount agreed, so I thought everything ok, deleted the picture and now, more than 2 months after I received an email saying that they will charge my card for damages, clearly a scam

BE CARFULL AND STAY AWAY

If you plan to rent a car from the munich airport, save yourself money and nerves and take the time to read this:
First, you need to know that the time you choose to pick your car up is the time you'll come to their desks to take a number and wait for at least 2 hours! but that is just the first disappointing service you'll experience as a europcar customer...

I rented a car for two weeks on june 2024, and when I dropped off the car, I was told to leave the car and go. so i took my bags and started to go when within 30 seconds was called back by a europcar rep and was shown a shallow scratch (which was found suspiciously fast), i was asked to sign a form that i was aware of the said scratch and was also told i wouldn't be asked to pay anything because i have insurance (i wanted to take care of everything on the spot), having trusted this person who represents a big well known company, i left.
a month later i received an email, demanding i pay europcar 900 euros (yes you read correctly!) for the damage! According to europcar, to fix a 4 cm shellow scratch, which any repair shop will buff for free, one would have to take the hood of the car apart and repaint it! i tried to dispute, asking them to re-evaluate the damage cost only to be told by email, again and again, the estimate is correct, the value of the car decreased due to the scratch and i am free to turn to legal consultation because they are allowed to charge me any amount they see fit for any damage by law. When I asked for proof of the repair cost, I was told they do not plan to fix the car (!!!) they have the right to demand the damage fee by law without actually fixing the car!
I actually checked about the said law they rely on and found out the law allows them indeed to charge the customer for damages, with an interesting exception: the damage repair estimate has to be reasonable...apparently 900 euros are "reasonable" according to europcar. I don't know what to call it other than taking advantage of customers (and I'm being very understated), most of whom (if not all) are tourists who don't have the ability to fight them in court for their policy.
So, do yourself a favor and choose wisely your next rental company, i suggest staying away from companies asking you to pay more than the total cost of a 2 weeks rental, for a superficial scratch.

poor service and dishonest company

We order a big car, so all our lauge will fit in, they did not had the car we wanted, then they made us wait 2 hours cause "the car you order just came back" it's will take 25-30 min of course that was a lie, after a hour and half we gave up, we canceled the order, and moved to hertz, they gave us free upgrade, the eurocap was very rude, and just told us the similar car is exactly the same, which it didn't, the car had 70 litter less space, we showed them the laguge doesn't fit, they waned to take 290 more euro for regular station waggon, Its the 2nd time this happen to me, I will never do that mistake again, poor service and not honest people

When we arrived at Palma Airport in Mallorca we had a very bad experience with Ok Mobility so we cancelled our booking and went to the desk from Europcar. It was there that we experient a real professional handling of our rental car contract. The way Mr Camilo Balzano treated us felt as a releave after our bad experience with OK Mobility. Thank you Mr Camilo Balzano and next time we won't hesitate and we will book again with Europcar. To the managers from Europcar Mallorca please make sure to give Mr Camilo Balzano the credits he deserves.

DO NOT USE EUROPCAR

I purchased a Europcar rental via Autoeurope from June 2 to June 8, 2024, pick up in Paris Montparnasse, return at CDG.

However when I arrived to collect the car I was told I could not because I was whitelisted. I had no idea what this is about. I would hardly have tried to hire a car again from Europcar had I been aware and trying to avoid paying whatever is outstanding.

This caused me great inconvenience and extra expense and I was left stranded in Paris with the rest of my itinerary in jeopardy, and I incurred many extra expenses taking trains and taxis to complete my planned itinerary. I was planning to tour Normandy during the D Day commemorations but that was impossible without a car. Finding a car for rent during this period is almost impossible.

When I complained to Europcar, they told me I was whitelisted because I had an outstanding unpaid toll charge from a previous rental. They told me they had paid the charge and I needed to pay them the amount before I could rent again. This was a lie. I had paid the charge and I sent them the proof. They admitted their "mistake".

In August I rented a car using Carjet which unfortunately turned out to be another Europcar rental. I did not notice when I made the booking, and I certainly would not have used Europcar again had I known.

When I arrived at Europcar Heathrow, I was refused a car again for the same reason. They had failed to remove my name from the whitelist. I was left stranded again, this time in London. I tried to prove to the people at the Heathrow office that I had paid the outstanding toll charge, but I was still whitelisted in the system so they did not give me a car. I missed a family gathering and was forced to pay for another hotel night in London.

I have complained repeatedly to Europcar for the last three months and asked them how they intend to compensate me for their incompetence and lies, but they just ignore me. I told them I would tell this story on Trust Pilot, but they don't care.

No response and no apology of any kind, just acknowledgment that they have received my many emails.

DO NOT USE EUROPCAR. They are dishonest and incompetent and they have no concern for their customers or their reputation. I guess there are enough new suckers renting cars every day that they don't need to look after their existing customers.

Made us spend double with a lie

We had booked an electric car with a range of 320km that would bring us from Palma de Mallorca airport to the hotel and back (there were no charging stations around the hotel). The employee at the airport told us the car would only have a range of 180km as it “was an older car”. This wouldn’t have been enough and therefore, we were forced to “upgrade” to a car that cost us double. I believe the employee lied to get commission on upselling. We had no choice, as we couldn’t risk getting stuck on the road. No compensation from their side. Will never choose them again

Harassment for damages

Rented a car in Italy from them last year. Was provided a supposed upgrade. What I got was a car that didn’t run properly. Car started to judder on acceleration, then engine warning light came on and car went into a reduced power mode. Raised with customer services and they offered a replacement if I drove car to Sienna. Took the car to Sienna branch only to be told they didn’t have a replacement for me and car was ok to drive. Rather than waste any more of my time on holiday we struggled on. Returned car to pick up point and told them about fault (so they could get it fixed). Car was checked for damage and was given clean bill of health and I received paperwork to confirm this. One month later I find over £1000 taken from my credit card by Europcar. In my junk email I found an email where they claimed had found further damage after inspection at garage that they claimed was my fault (car had been driven for another 90 km at this point) I complained but to no avail. I raised it with my credit card company and they upheld my claim and I got my money back. A few months passed and then I started getting emails from Europcar asking for the money, some of which threatening court action. I am still receiving the emails now.
Will never use again

Awful service, don't use, save your nerves and vacation

We arrived July 30 at VCE after a transaltlatic overnight flight with 2 young kids, booked Euopcar via VIPCars.com (do not use this site!), I even purchased a digital International Driving Permit. The lady at Europcar refused to rent us the car. Peak tourist season, kids and wife have not slept, everyone is crying. She didn't care at all. Why? Because I did not have a paper IDP. It's the 21st century, digital documents are valid, all the other car rental counters at VCE accept them, she did not, with no care at all that there are NO cars available from anyone else at VCE at this time. My Canadian licence is in both english and french (two offcial languages of the EU), my digital IDP was present. Nope. I asked to speak to the manager, I was told to wait half an hour (she was out back smoking, you can smell it). The manager eventually came out, she showed a little concern re kids etc, but still refused to rent. Please NOTE: it does not stipulate a paper IDP anywhere on my confirmations from VIPCars.com. I showed this and everything else a million times, they don't care. Do not used Europcar. It's a fancy name, but they don't care.
