Serious Taxi Incident Arranged by Hotel Doorman – No Follow-Up From Management
I rarely leave negative reviews, but unfortunately my experience with Hotel Edison following a serious incident has been extremely disappointing.
When leaving the hotel for JFK Airport, a taxi was arranged directly outside the property by one of the hotel’s doormen. Before we entered the vehicle, the doorman and driver appeared to know each other and spent a short time chatting and laughing together. As guests, we trusted that transportation facilitated by hotel staff would be legitimate and safe.
During the journey several concerning issues became apparent. The driver never activated the meter at any point, the driver identification displayed inside the vehicle was facing away from passengers and not visible, and part of the taxi number appeared to be obscured. The driver also drove aggressively throughout the journey, swerving between lanes, accelerating rapidly and braking harshly, which made the trip genuinely uncomfortable.
When we arrived at JFK Terminal 4, once we had already exited the vehicle and were holding our luggage, the driver informed us the fare was $120 and demanded payment in cash. He then demanded an additional $20 tip while standing extremely close and pressuring for payment.
In total we were forced to pay $140 in cash.
This was particularly concerning as the official flat fare for a yellow taxi between Manhattan and JFK Airport is $70, with normal surcharges typically bringing the total to roughly $85–$100. The amount demanded therefore significantly exceeded the standard regulated fare.
After returning home I contacted the hotel to report the incident. It took several follow-up emails before I received an initial response. In that response the hotel acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, confirmed that an internal investigation had been initiated, and stated that I would receive a substantive update by Friday.
That update never came.
Since then I have sent multiple additional follow-up emails over several weeks and have received no further response whatsoever.
For a hotel charging significant nightly rates and a substantial facility fee, guests should be able to trust that taxis facilitated directly outside the hotel by staff are legitimate and safe. Equally, when a guest reports a serious safety concern and potential overcharging, the hotel should follow through on its commitment to investigate and respond.
Due to the lack of follow-up after repeated attempts to resolve this directly, I will now be pursuing the matter further through the appropriate regulatory and consumer channels.
No service recovery
I have stayed at Hotel Edison multiple times in the past and always recommended it, but this visit was extremely disappointing. Our Terrace Suite had a broken sofa bed that staff confirmed had been an ongoing issue. Despite contacting the front desk late at night, there was no documentation, no follow-up, and we didn’t receive a rollaway bed until after 2:00 a.m., resulting in major loss of sleep.
The next two mornings were filled with loud construction noise starting around 9:00 a.m., with no prior notice and no meaningful response when reported. Throughout the stay, staff across departments seemed unaware of prior issues, offered little empathy, and in some cases implied user error rather than acknowledging the problem. We also dealt with deactivated room keys, a clogged drain, and express checkout not working.
The biggest issue wasn’t the problems themselves, but the lack of communication, accountability, and guest care. Sadly, I contacted the hotel by email a week ago and no response.

Big let down
Great location, friendly staff although they can't tell you what you are getting charged for and are making things up by the sounds of it. Our room which we are currently in is bad. No heating after it runs for a couple of minutes, I wrote dust on the ice bucket lid because it's so dirty. Can't use coffee maker because so dirty inside it. Soap dispenser not refilled since don't know when and we have been here since Friday. No drawers in room for storage so living out of suitcases. Heater very noisy.
Absolutely shocking hotel in NY
Absolutely shocking hotel in NY, sent flowers to my wife for our anniversary, they wouldn't accept them for my wife as she was out.
It's absolutely disgusting, never stay here, if that's a policy.
I will remover them from our London-NY guide of places to stay.
Use the Hilton much better staff.

The hotel looks dated in parts and ok in others my room looked a bit dated but was clean ,the shower was like a wet room so everything got soaked ,there was no coffee machine or kettle for drinks not table or chair to sit at just a bed and bedside cabinet ,it was right next to Times Square which is a blessing or a curse as each night its packed and noisy the air con was noisy too it sounded louder than a jumbo jet some nights ,breakfast was nice if you paid the extra 6.50 dollars per person plus tips or grab and go was okay but most times I went they had run out of the hot sandwich so had to wait around unto 15 mins some mornings
when arrived there I had to pay city tax and deposit 300 dollars but got 230 back so just be aware that was for 5 nights stay
Misuse of credit card and spectacular…
Misuse of credit card and spectacular rudeness.
My husband and I checked in to the Edison Hotel, and since then there have been numerous attempts to charge the card we used at check-in, including one at 3am. We have no idea why there would need to be further charges; and the fact that they're happening at 3am shows that someone is trying to misuse the card. My husband asked at the front desk about this issue, and was treated extremely rudely by the person he spoke with. She couldn't be bothered, and said he didn't have an issue.
Also, I have never in my life been treated so rudely by hotel staff at check-in. We'd called the day before to ensure that I could check in without the card we wanted to use, and were told this was fine. When we arrived we were told that we needed the card, and had to follow a link to fill out a form. Clearly the first person we spoke with didn't know what they were talking about.
When the person at the front desk explained this to me at check in, he was incredibly unpleasant and spoke to me as if I were an idiot and inconvenience. He contacted the manager, who was openly hostile, barking at me what the correct procedures are and treating me like I was dog mess on the bottom of his shoe instead of a guest paying hundreds of dollars a night. At one point he was so angry he abandoned our conversation and got a senior manager to take over.
Overall I waited more than an hour to check in.
Throughout this whole process not one person apologized to me. Nobody said they were sorry for the confusion, for the extended amount of time it took me to check in, or the rudeness of the staff. In any other hotel the front desk staffer would have gently apologized for the mixup and explained what needed to happen.
I'm not sure what business the Edison Hotel thinks it's in, but it's clearly not looking after or valuing its guests. What an awful experience -- even more outrageous considering the high cost of the hotel!

Stayed at Edison feb 2025 5 nights
With my daughter and granddaughter
On arrival gave my credit card paid 240 dollars extra which included grab and go breakfast free wine one night. The hotel was in good location. Room was basic no kettle to make drinks just coffee machine had to take light switch out to plug the coffee machine in which was dangerous as plug was behind unit . The only thing good about the hotel is the location. We never complained just made the most of it . When we checked out the receptionist took are key said everything was ok.
When we got home I noticed they had took two payment from my card one was for the 240 Dollers for the charge, the other was £198 I did not know what for . We emailed hotel they said it was for the mirror that was broken in bathroom . This was not true we checked everything before we left nothing was broken. We asked for our money back and proof of this damage we have had no reply. They should email you first why they are taking the money from your account with proof. If you stay at this hotel before you leave make sure you take pictures of your room that was my regret. I feel they take money with out my authorisation I have never had this problem were ever I have stayed just be careful staying at this hotel as I certainly won’t stay and I will be telling people don’t stay at this hotel.
Just home from 4 days in New york
Just home from 4 days in New york. We stayed in the Hotel Edison. Followed the directions on their website from JFK airport and it was so simple also saving us a small fortune. Got checked in and given our room. Our first room was dated and the noise was terrible from something outside the bedroom window, hence no sleep that night. Next morning I explained to the reception about the noise, and the fact it was a special birthday present. Hanniel was very understanding and moved us to another room and apologised. They also sent up a bottle of wine and some delicious birthday treats. The hotel is very nice and I found the staff pleasant. It is getting rooms renovated. It's in the heart of times square, and easy access to everything. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would return again.
Avoid. Never a 4*
Would avoid at all costs. The photos shown are the 2nd room, after moving due to noise. This is a signature room. Which was dirty, dated, cold and had 0 view out the window. The hotel has scaffolding up which is not mentioned anywhere.
So, to start, the hotel receptionist Jenn and her manager were either having a bad week or were just generally rude. The first room, also a signature room had the loudest air con unit that went off every hour in the night, which is great when you have jet lag. Coupled with pipe work that also bangs constantly from 5am onwards. There are quite a few reviews with the same issues.
Asked to move as we had children with us, and were placed in this grotty room shown in the photos. Which didnt have the loud air con unit, as it wasnt working. So in minus 15 temperatures, we had this little oil heater instead. Great!
The pipe work still banged 5am onwards but i could not deal with the hassle of moving again.
Both rooms were dated and worn. Both rooms could have been a lot cleaner and a LOT quieter.
Ive been to New York more than once, its noisy and we know that but you should at least have the luxury of some peace in your hotel room.
The bathroom in the rooms has the worst designed showers, the water goes everywhere! All over the floor and there is no way to stop this as there is just half a screen that is fixed.
This hotel is in no way a 4* and was so disappointing. They do not respond to complaints, you will see this on more than 1 review too.
Please avoid. We have stayed in less star nicer hotels in times square which were much better value for money.
really awful
really awful. rooms are DISGUSTING and clearly were not cleaned at all other than the bedsheets (garbage from previous guests still on the floor), carpets were torn and ripped up, bathroom was falling apart, internet is unsecure and leaves you vulnerable to any other guest or individual who knows how to abuse it (in other words, there is no internet), hot water doesnt exist.
Staff was friendly though. All of this for the price they charge is absolutely horrendous. Avoid at all costs
Excellent hotel
Booked this hotel having needed to change hotels at short notice. Fantastic location, comfortable bed, clean room, immediately cleaned communal areas, beautifully decorated. Friendly, polite staff.
Would highly recommend and we'll certainly be staying again, loved the place.
A great stay at Hotel Edison New York
We arrived at the Hotel Edison on 27th May 2024.
The hotel is beautiful, art deco in design. Has Friedmans and Bond 45 restaurants. There is a gift shop which also sells snacks and toiletries at quite a reasonable price.
Check in was easy and the staff were very helpful.
We arrived at our room, it was small, but had everything we needed for our stay. It was my birthday whilst we were away and there was a lovely car and bottle of wine left for us in rge room. A really nice touch.
The bathroom was small and not much space for toiletries, but we managed. The room was very clean and was cleaned daily and towels changed daily
You were given vouchers fir breakfast each day, either a free grab and go breakfast, consisting of a pastry and drink or a $6.50 breakfast. Really reasonable fir the choices you get. There are lots of other things on the menu, but this was ample for us.
The hotel is just off Times Square and we actually had a side view of it. The Edison is central for everything, close to Broadway and all the shows. Close to a subway station, about 25 minutes walk to Macys and The Empire State, 5th Avenue with rhe lovely shops within walking distance. Central Park within walking distance.
We really enjoyed our time at Hotel Edison and would stay here again

We stayed 4 nights May 2024 arriving receptionist quite blunt our room was including breakfast was only included if grab & go $6.50 to sit and then advised we had to pay $40 per night facility fee which covered breakfast/ WiFi etc so not included this was not clear when booking.
Room was dated, tired and scruffy certain not like website images windows poor and noise from street as at front of building which you appreciate to a degree as you are
in Times square.
Breakfast choice was limited 4 items however was nice and no hot drink making facilities in the room.
The majority of staff were helpful and the food was very good overall decor ok.
May 2024
Enjoyed our stay at the Hotel, a great location for sights. Security staff very helpful and friendly as were the Reception staff apart from two of the evening staff, quite rude and arrogant, seems they not happy with their jobs! Would be nice to have tea coffee facilities in the Room. Cleaning staff fantastic.
I had an unfortunate situation at Hotel Edison
I had an unfortunate situation at Hotel Edison and I have spent over a year and a half simply trying to get a hold of someone to help me find resolution. I have sent several messages, letters and phone calls yet no one bothered to even acknowledge my concerns. I had really hoped to resolve this situation amicably and professionally but instead they are forcing my hand to write this negative review and as reviews are important to this industry maybe one day they will read this note and might actually look at this opportunity to better their customer service and relations.
Simple communication goes a long way. I am a patient and reasonable person but I feel that my business was not at all valued and my concerns ignored.
I travel to NYC several times a year and send my clients, business associates and friends hotel referrals and recommendations on a regular basis.
I had never spoken negatively about this hotel as I wanted to give them an opportunity to make things right but seeing that they are not interested or concerned about their clients I will make a point of letting people know of my massive disappointment and concern for the lack of professionalism and care.
- A very disappointed past guest
Good Hotel, Great Location!
Family trip to New York (1/7/23-8/7/23.) stayed at The Edison Hotel. The hotel is in a great location, just off Times Square. Positives are the location, we loved the Rum house bar in the hotel, had breakfast in Friedmans restaurant also within the hotel, using the voucher paid for when we checked in. Rooms were adequate and cleaned daily. Air conditioning did work but was noisy. We also liked that security was at entry, and you needed your room key to operate the elevator.
Negatives, On checking in we was charged $40 per night per room ($480 total) this was a surprise as nobody mentioned this when we booked, it did provide us with a list of things we would get for this change. The only useful thing was a breakfast from the limited breakfast menu in Friedmans for $5pp.
Apart from the “service charge” a positive experience.

Stayed 4 nights here and found it a great hotel. Really in the heart of things and yards away from Time Square. The hotel downstairs looked very art deco and I loved it. Room spotless and it was great having tea and coffee machine plus water. Bed really comfy and no noise at night. We had not realised we had a free breakfast if we took away. Good security as you had to show your room key to go up in the lift. Staff very helpful especially when my friend and I were trying to get connected to the WiFi. Really enjoyed our stay here.

Trip with friend and daughters 8.1.23 till 11.1.23 2 rooms already paid for presented vouchers. Both myself and daughter asked for credit card information when we arrived home we have both been charged £101 each !!! disgusting sent 3 emails and travel company too sent one in process of claiming back through credit card although been told they have rejected first letter now credit card company pursuing again so disappointed
This hotel is very dirty
This hotel is very dirty, the rooms are out dated and poor quality, dust, chipped paint, marked mirrors, old air-con unit
The WiFi stopped working for me and my partner multiple times which was very frustrating as we had no mobile data to use.
Staff don’t seem to be very helpful, we first arrived and checked in through the touch machines as there was a massive line for check in. They took 100 dollars from us then 2 days later 20 dollars came out of my account, we went to ask them why this was and they said because you should of paid 200 on arrival for the night fee (which includes and grab and go breakfast which we were not told about so we did not use) we then asked her if we could pay the remainder balance as my bank charges extra if I’m using my card out of the UK, she then took the remainder of the money: we checked out 2 days later and they said the bill was payed, 2 days later they’ve taken another 100 dollars out of my account for no reason and now we can not get hold of them
The only positive was the location, so if you can afford to go somewhere better definitely do!
Super rude staff
We had 3 rooms, checked in early & returned to get our Keys after 3pm, one room was still unavailable & we were told to go to one of the other rooms until it was ready. Staff were very rude, (with the exception of a lady with long dark hair on reception) staff made you feel we should be grateful to them for letting us stay.
We were under the impression we had settled our bill at ‘check in’ but turns out our payment was only authorized at that point, we returned to reception the following day, as numerous payments had been taken from our cards. We were informed if we did pay in full, no more payments would be authorized……..WRONG, they continued to authorize payments for random amounts, the last one of which did not get removed from our accounts until 8 days after we returned home. Whist at reception that day, another guest was also complaining his card had had various random amounts taken, leaving him with little spending money.
Bed was comfortable, we had no water or coffee left in room, as the rest of our party had in their rooms.
Bathroom tile grout was covered in mildew & shower rose was hanging off of wall.
