Fast shipping
Fast shipping, secure packaging, and accurate order fulfillment. A great online purchasing experience. Highly recommend Downeast and will purchase from them again.
Sizing is way off
Sizing is way off. I ordered 4 large "layering essentials" tops. They were a bit snug so I returned for the next size up and had to pay $9.95 in shipping to return.
Two of the 4 X-large replacement items were out of stock and no alternative was offered. The other 2 items that arrived were still too small. They fit the same as the large tops. Now I have to pay another $9.95 in shipping to return them.
Also ... if anyone is short-waisted, these layering essentials will go to your low hips. Maybe flattering for a teen-ager, which I am not.
Poor customer service experience
Shopped here since I was a teenager, and it’s sad to see how downhill it’s gone. I recently ordered a skirt and it never arrived. There should be something in place to help customers when this happens, instead I’m out the $. Poor customer service all around. Never shopping with Downeast again, it’s easy to see why their St. George location closed.
Three Dresses, Same Defect: DownEast’s Viscose Problem and Customer Disregard
I’ve been a DownEast customer since 2008—clothing, furniture, you name it. While I’ve occasionally encountered sizing or quality inconsistencies, nothing ever compelled me to write a public review—until now. This latest experience, and even more so the dismissive response from customer service, truly takes the cake. After reading the many scathing reviews on TrustPilot and elsewhere, I now feel it would be irresponsible not to share my own experience and join the growing number of customers who’ve been similarly disregarded. So here we go.
Last June, I purchased two dresses: the Jaida and the Athena. I washed Jaida months before Athena, but the results of washing both dresses were the same - considerable shrinkage despite following care instructions exactly. The Athena, especially, went from a perfect fit to being two sizes smaller – in a single wash! The puff sleeves collapsed, the dress shortened, and the silhouette was ruined. I have before and after photos and the difference is undeniable. When it clicked that there must be a common culprit, I did some digging and discovered that both dresses are made of viscose. Then I recalled a dress I bought in 2019 that also shrank considerably after the first wash, despite following the care instructions. I checked the tag; sure enough – also made of viscose.
This is now the third viscose dress I’ve purchased from DownEast that shrank beyond wearability. Three different dresses, bought years apart, with the same disastrous result. To make matters worse, all three had conflicting care labels. One said “dry clean only,” another said “do not dry clean.” I mean, which is it? Or are we not supposed to wash our clothes at all?
Viscose is far too finicky, delicate, and irreversibly unpredictable to be used in clothing. It should be on the blacklist of any ethical and reputable clothing brand. Yet DownEast continues to use it, label it vaguely, and shift the responsibility to customers when their products inevitably fail.
I reached out to their customer service with detailed documentation. I included receipts, before and after photos, conflicting care instructions, and even fabric research. I made it clear this was not a simple return request but a report of defective material and misleading labeling. Their response was a generic message from “Sydney M.” that prioritized policy over accountability. Because I didn’t discover the flaw within 90 days, they refused to acknowledge it as a defect, even though the issue was inherent before these dresses even hit the sales floor! Whether it was revealed after 30, 90, or 300 days, the defect was always there, and I should never have been in a position to have to discover it in the first place!
After some unproductive back-and-forth correspondence and my request to escalate the issue, Sydney offered me a $25 gift card as a “gesture of goodwill.” It wasn’t part of her initial response. When I thanked her but explained that the gesture didn’t even begin to cover the nearly $200 I had lost, I received no reply. It’s now been nearly two weeks and DownEast has ghosted me.
This isn’t just about three ruined dresses. It’s about a company that refuses to own up to clear and repeated failures. It’s about poor material choices, contradictory care labels, and a complete unwillingness to engage honestly with informed, loyal customers.
When someone shops for clothing, they should not have to second-guess whether the care labels are accurate or the fabric choices are sound. Customers trust that brands have already done the legwork to ensure quality and durability. To dismiss a customer who has done that work for you, who has highlighted a problem you should have addressed long ago, is not just irresponsible, but unethical, greedy, and frankly, cruel. If DownEast had exercised better judgment in its fabric choices or vendor selection, this never would have happened. Yet I’m the one paying the price.
If you’re considering buying from DownEast, know this: they do not care about you. And if you see viscose on any tag in their store, walk away.
Fraudulent company
I bought a king size duvet (final sale). I washed on delicate and hung to dry. Found out it was a queen size with a hole in the middle of it. I took it in and talked to the Manager. She said that since I washed it there was nothing she could do. No exchange for the size I paid for, no difference of price refund from the king to the queen. I paid $200 for this stupid, damaged, mis-labeled duvet. Garbage company with garbage good and garbage customer service.
Wanted to love Downeast
Wanted to love Downeast, but feel really let down. We loved the employees who helped us with the purchase, which was two couches and two accent chairs. We spent about $5,000-$6,000 there. But about 90 days later, one of the couches burst a hole out of the bottom and all the stuffing is shooting out.
We don't have pets, and our kids aren't allowed to play on these couches. They've seen nothing but normal use. The fabric just failed and unfortunately Downeast was not willing to help after only having them for about 3 months. I didn't even request a refund or return. I just asked that they assist in getting it professionally repaired. They were very nice in how they communicated, but made it clear they would not offer anything to help.
I wouldn't recommend anyone purchase furniture from here. The styles are great, and the employees are nice, but I don't feel you can trust the quality or the company to stand behind their products.
Terrible online order and return experience
I ordered some clothes online and what I had sent to me was disgusting. They didn’t include one of the items I had ordered and instead I found a nasty plaid shirt, not even from the same company, that was covered in dirt and oil and smelled bad. The residue from the shirt got on the other two items I ordered. When I asked for a return, they said they would take back the order but only gave me a partial return. The entire order was about $55 and they said they could give me $26 back on my card or $43 in-store credit. I took the in-store credit only because it gave me most of my money back. I just used my credit and was only able to purchase 1 shirt and had to pay for shipping. I am very dissatisfied and will no longer be ordering from them again.
Can not return even if it doesn’t fit
Can not return a sale item in store or online even if it doesn’t fit. Who does that today. First time and last time buyer!
Poor customer service
I have been shopping at Downeast clothing for the last few months at the location in Mesa Arizona at the Dana point location. The manager has always been friendly and helpful. I bought two T-shirts recently that were fairly expensive and thought they were good quality. I only wore them two times and washed them and took good care of them. They had little holes all over. I tried to return them today and she was defensive and rude. She tried to tell me that the quality was good and when I disagreed with her, she did not like that, she was very unprofessional. She did exchange one of the shirts, but was not happy about it. I will not be shopping there anymore and will make sure to tell other people not to shop there either.
Best clothing store to come across in a long while...
I came upon Downeast during a casual scroll and bought some clothes. Read some of the negative reviews after the purchase was complete. To my pleasant surprise, my order arrived within 5 days and I couldn't be more happy about the purchase. They offer unique styles, quality materials, and unbeatable prices. Will definitely purchase from this store again.
Bought a feather sectional and leather…
Bought a feather sectional and leather ottoman from the Bountiful location and when both were delivered, they were all flawed, discolored and in terrible condition. After waiting for months for these pieces we were so disappointed. Well needless to say they have the worst customer service and were very condescending to us. They charged me restocking fees and delivery fees for their crappy, flawed furniture. Since being bought out by Malouf, this franchise has gone downhill drastically. The prices are much higher, the quality is horrendous and the customer service is the worst I’ve experienced. To top it off, we bought it when it was on sale for 30% off, yet they only ended up giving us 20%, so they are very dishonest too. They will go under if things do not improve. I will NEVER buy anything at any of their locations again and will tell many others. HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!p
I don't even want to give one star
I don't even want to give one star with what I experienced. I was at this location on 8/26/2022 to shop sectional for my home. The one I liked was nice but had questions about the fabric. The sales person told us that it is durable and great fabric. I trusted and ordered it, but the product delivered to my house a few days later was poor, and looked like very close to the material on my fold up basket in my closet on a cardboard. I could tell that it won't last for long time. For a very expensive ($3000) sectional, I expect real textile material, not a cheap almost paper like material. Not only the material itself, but sowing quality was poor and strings were picking out on several spots already, and the lines are not straight from get go. So I can imagine that if you wipe this material with a cloth, it will ruin quick.
The delivery came at 7:30am, and thought too early in the morning, too.
I call the Draper store, and I was told to send pictures of what I was explaining to her. The Draper store sales rep told me that they have never gotten my email, and tried again. My email history showed that it was delivered, so I called the company's customer service. She told me that I can send the pictures to the support center, and she will make sure to Draper store call me.
The Draper store's manager called me back then to schedule for the pick up the product from my house, but they are charging me for the pick up fee of $120+ and the 10% of the purchase which was $300. Don't understand why they have to charge so much for requesting the return of the poor product immediately after the delivery. I won't recommend the furnitures from DownEast Home.
Do not under any circumstances but…
Do not under any circumstances buy furniture from this online store. I bought the Romy chair. Online it looked white, the name said buttercream so things seemed pretty legit. The chair came in looking like a dark beige. Even the name on the box said “twill armure wheat.” At first I thought that they had sent me the wrong color but after contacting them, they said that they renamed the chair color to buttercream and now I have to pay for shipping of the chairs back to me and a 10% restocking fee. Essential even if I return 2 chairs, I only get money back for one. This company is a scam and it disgusts me that it’s still in business
Great experience all around
I was a bit nervous to order a love seat that I'd never sat in before and that didn't have a lot of reviews online, but I'd been looking for months and it was the right size, fabric, style, and price. It's the Cloud Love Seat in the canvas color. I'd never heard of this company but saw a facebook ad (because they stalk my internet activity and know I am furniture shopping). I called the company and did some research to verify their legitimacy and ordered from their site. 10 days later the love seat was delivered (from Utah to California) and it's perfect. I am so happy! It's comfortable, looks just like the photo, arrived in perfect condition and was delivered to my front door. I'm surprised they are not experiencing covid delays right now - I have two chairs from Crate and Barrel that are taking 4 months to arrive. I'll definitely consider ordering from Downeast Home again.
No shipping visibility, accountability, or quality control
I ordered a table. No shipping confirmation was sent until I followed up twice (didn’t receive a response for 4! days post-second outreach), which just had text saying it’d arrive on Tuesday. The agent on the phone said “we’ll that’s bc you’re in salt lake, and our facility is also in salt lake.” (…shouldn’t everyone receive a shipping confirmation?)
To top it off, the box arrived with a large slit through it. Damaged product and the guy who dropped it off left it at the bottom of our entrance, rather than using his tool to get it into our dining room (literally the first room through the entrance). Will never order from downeast homes again
Low quality clothes for a high price
Low quality clothes for a high price. I purchased several back to school shirts here & within a day and they have now all ripped and torn at the seams after one wear. Used to love this place but recently very disappointed with the lack of quality.
Terrible experience
I purchased a sofa and two dining chairs in January. Both items were supposed to be delivered in 12 weeks. At 16 weeks, I still had not heard from Downeast Home. I contacted them, and they said it was going to be another month for delivery, which takes us to May. In May, they emailed me and said the couch would be delivered in June & the chairs in August. Of course, I received nothing nor any follow-up from the company. In July, I followed up and canceled my order. 7 months down the drain. Who knows when I would have received my items. In January, I also ordered 2 custom couches from Crate & Barrel, and they were delivered in 11 weeks. This was a horrible experience, and I will NEVER purchase anything from this company again.
end table and coffee table
We bought an end table and coffee table; we are less than satisfied as the tables are wobbly because the metal frame is bent inward. So even though we put a piece under the legs to balance the unsturdiness, the legs are noticeably crooked. It’s disappointing and frustrating knowing how much we paid and how long we waited for the delivery (a month) and how much effort it will be to return or exchange.
Waste of $2000
I purchased a $2000 down-filled sofa here and am super disappointed. The sofa was comfortable but very poor quality for the price, and DownEast kept promising a fix that never came.
The fabric itself started to wear after about a year. I live alone... a $2000 sofa should not start to wear after a single person uses it for a year. Additionally, the down feathers popped out too much. I understand the nature of down-filled items and expected this to some extent. However, the feathers constantly poked & scratched (and hurt!) every time I sat down. Additionally, I was constantly vacuuming up feathers. I made a complaint, and DownEast said they would send some cushion liners to stop this problem. I followed up 3 times over the next 6-8 months - each time they said there was a delay at the warehouse (that I believe is in China). It’s now almost been a year since they promised the cushion liners and not a word. I ended up selling the sofa on a classifieds site.
I would strongly recommend spending your money elsewhere for quality furniture and customer service.
Very frustrating Downeast experience.
I ordered a couch from Downeast and it wasn't delivered until February. They kept telling me it would be delivered the next week and then the next week and then the next week...
I'm no couchologist, but I'm fairly certain in the time it took them to deliver this couch I could have gone to the forest, harvested all of the necessary wood and fibers needed to make a couch, and built it myself. They said it was sent from California but the only possible explanation for why it took so long was that they loaded it onto a handcart and pulled it to Utah, mile by mile.
If I could impart any words of wisdom to you from beyond the computer screen, it would be to find a couch somewhere else.
