Boutiques hotel prices, Baffling Service and Shocking room maintenance. Saved only by and Exceptional breakfast.
Our arrival at Craigadam Country House Hotel was incredibly uncomfortable. Instead of a warm welcome, we were instantly challenged by the host about why we had booked online via Agoda rather than direct. She aggressively disputed the price, insisting that I had paid £150. She pushed this argument to the point where I was forced to stand out on the doorstep, opening my personal banking app before we were even allowed inside the building, to check my statement. The bank statement confirmed I had actually paid £133.82.Once inside, we were subjected to a lecture about pricing and platform commissions, with the host complaining that Agoda only pays her £130 and she gets more when guests book direct. She went on to vent that Agoda hadn't paid her for another guest who had left 6 weeks ago, and openly admitted that if she had possessed our contact details beforehand, she would have cancelled our booking altogether. The tense atmosphere continued when she led my partner to our room; she was so oblivious to my presence that she walked off and shut the door directly in my face, leaving me behind in the corridor. The bedroom itself was a massive disappointment for a property charging premium area rates (£130+). The room felt incredibly tired—looking as though it hadn't been updated in 15 years—and suffered from a severe lack of cleanliness. As you can see from the attached photos, there were heavy, thick cobwebs spread across the ceiling corners and even woven directly into the folds of the curtains. The hot drink amenities were completely unhygienic. As documented in our photos, the teapot still contained the former occupant's half-used tea and was deeply stained inside, the mugs had visible residue rings, and the cafetière was pre-filled with what appeared to be loose instant coffee. Furthermore, there was only one drinking glass available because the other glass was being used to hold the milk sachets. Basic details were entirely missed: there were no ironing facilities, no loo roll holder, hand towels and extra pillows were hidden away inside the wardrobe rather than laid out, and the provided toiletries were already half-empty. The television could also only be viewed if you were lying directly in the bed.Breakfast was an absolute Jekyll and Hyde transformation. The dining room was wonderfully laid out with traditional elegance—featuring beautiful silverware, silver candlesticks, a pepper grinder, and milk in proper jugs. We ate 'en famille' at a large communal table, which was the absolute highlight of our stay as our fellow guests were fantastic conversationalists. The food itself was fantastic and exceptionally well-cooked by the chef.Unfortunately, the hosting style managed to cloud this too. There was no physical menu. When taking orders the night before, the host listed the options rapidly while my partner was in the bathroom. I was forced to guess his order; when I later explained I went for a full breakfast because I knew he would eat it, this was later weaponised against us. During breakfast, the host was noticeably warmer to other guests and publicly policed my partner's plate, commenting on his leftover fried bread by saying, "Your wife said you would eat it."When it came to departure, there was no mention of how or where to check out, so we simply left our key in the open room. While the chef and the dining room presentation deserve massive praise, true boutique hospitality starts at the front door. We will not be returning, as there are plenty of other places in the area to discover.
