The Chocolate Detective is the home of ethical, sustainable chocolate — curated and created by Chantal Coady OBE, founder of Rococo Chocolates and a lifelong chocolate activist. With a magnifying glass and decades of experience, Chantal seeks out chocolate that is as delicious as it is responsible, championing transparency, provenance and exceptional craft. Our collections follow three guiding strands. Connect focuses on relationships at origin and the people behind great chocolate — working with cocoa farmers in Grenada and highlighting grass-roots “tree-to-bar” production that keeps value in local economies. Create celebrates Chantal’s original recipes and flavour inventions developed over years of making and tasting — including the much-loved Golden Sea Salt. Curate brings together outstanding chocolates from other reputable makers: classics and discoveries that are simply too good not to share. We care about the full journey of a chocolate gift: ingredients, ethics, packaging and impact. Our cocoa is sourced through a fully traceable supply chain and is Rainforest Alliance certified, supporting improved outcomes for farming communities and their families. We also prioritise thoughtful packaging: materials are recyclable wherever possible, and our egg cartons are specially developed using bagasse — a clean, food-grade by-product of sugar cane production that is home compostable. Beyond chocolate, we support nature and conservation in the UK, including the Lundy Field Society and the Knepp Rewilding Project. From beautifully speckled chocolate eggs to bars and seasonal gifts, The Chocolate Detective exists to prove that ethical chocolate can be joyful, creative, and genuinely exquisite. Our illustration is by Sir Quentin Blake — a perfect match for the curious spirit of the Chocolate Detective.

Utterly delicious chocolate eggs

Delicious chocolate eggs, beautifully presented, reasonably priced for such a high quality product, packaged carefully and posted quickly. The perfect Easter 🐣 present. In fact, everybody I gave them to found them enchanting and truly scrumptious: what a charming company!

Absolutely delicious and beautifully packaged very decent chocolates

I have bought the chocolate birds eggs for various occasions over the years as they are so pretty but this Christmas I went off-piste and ordered some of the other chocolates. They were so enticing I didn’t give them all away in the end! Favourites among a very delicious bunch were the almonds and the chocolate crystallised ginger which you don’t see anywhere else. I am going to order some slabs of fennel and cardamom and the sour cherries. The packaging is really smart.

Thank you so much @twodoghousehold for your lovely review. We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed the "A Frame" range of different and very special chocolate that we make. The ginger and the cherry that you talk about are made from our own Grenadian chocolate, the cocoa beans that come our farm in Hermitage.

I was given an absolutely delicious box…

I was given an absolutely delicious box of 12 Swift Eggs for Christmas and thoroughly enjoyed them, especially the salted caramel. The packaging is beautifully illustrated and I was really pleased to be able to share the eggs with my own guests this week. We all loved them and it's great to discover a new brand. Thank you!

Given “puffin eggs” as a gift

I was given “puffin eggs” as a gift. I was shocked that any company would think it was OK to sell replica eggs even if they are made of chocolate. I find the ethics of this highly questionable. I couldn't bring myself to eat them. I would never buy or gift these to anyone and would not recommend this company to anyone on ethical grounds.

Hi there — thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I’m genuinely sorry the gift caused you concern.

To be completely clear: our “puffin eggs” are 100% chocolate, they are not intended to be "replica eggs". No real eggs are used, nothing is taken from nests, and no wildlife is disturbed — ever. The speckled shells are a playful design inspired by nature, and the packaging copy is intended to do the opposite of encouragement: it notes that collecting wild bird eggs is illegal.

We also take ethics seriously. Our cocoa is sourced through a fully traceable supply chain and is Rainforest Alliance certified, and our packaging is recyclable with a home-compostable bagasse carton. Beyond our ingredients and packaging, we support conservation in the UK, including the Lundy Field Society and the Knepp Rewilding Project.

If you’re willing, please contact us via our website with any details you have (even just the date or the name of the person who gifted it) and we’ll be happy to help — including arranging a refund or an alternative product that feels more comfortable for you.

With best wishes,
The Chocolate Detective Customer Care Team

Amazing chocolates

Amazing chocolates, we’ve had the bird eggs a few times and they are perfect for any special occasion. The packaging is really well thought through, and I appreciate the plastic free approach. Will definitely order again!

Eggs were delicious!

Eggs were delicious, particularly the salted caramel ones! The packaging and presentation is beautiful and makes for a really special gift. All my friends raved about them when I, reluctantly, shared them around.

Poor product, poor customer service

I received a box of chocolate eggs for Easter that had clearly been incorrectly stored as the outer shell (think mini eggs style!) had melted leaving a hardened puddle of icing around each chocolate, fusing them to the box and rendering them both inedible and unappetising nevertheless.

I’ve reached out to the company twice, and despite automated confirmation emails, have heard nothing further. As such, I wouldn’t recommend buying from this company as its products are clearly poorly packaged and their customer service is non-existent.

Thank you for writing about your experience. I believe that we have already replaced your eggs. When we investigated the problem with your delivery, where the eggs appear to have got damp at some point after leaving our air conditioned warehouse. This has never happened before and I hope that you received the replacement and will consider updating your review. Please accept our apologies. Best wishes.

Sad to say whilst the chocolates are…

Sad to say whilst the chocolates are lovely dealing with Tom - customer service ?
was excruciating.

Tom - was basically disinterested and bluntly rude.Trying to get information out of him was painful and it struck me he wasn't well ...
I give up! the chocolates were fine - please read above the issue was dealing with Tom and asking questions prior to purchase the fact you have taken nearly a year to respond says it all- I won't be buying again sadly.

I was taken aback by the lack of customer service

I wish I had read the previous review before I had placed the order! My order got stuck somewhere along the way with the Royal Mail and had not been delivered on the day that it should have been delivered. I called up The Chocolate Detective to see whether there was anything they might be able to do to assist or if they had more detail on the tracking information as it had not been updated. It is a long time since I have been spoken to in such a rude and unhelpful manner. I even raised it during the telephone conversation to which I then received the sarcastic response of 'Oh I'm so TERRIBLY sorry!' and I was told 'No, no, no there is nothing we can do to help'. The sad thing is that I was using this order as a test before I went and did a massive order for Christmas presents from them as I thought their product was great- not anymore.

I am so sorry to hear of your poor experience and that you chose to buy your Christmas Presents elsewhere. I am sorry for the very late response, this has only just come to my attention. I have requested a follow up so I can understand what happened better re Royal Mail, which sadly does not always deliver as they promise to do.

Another miserable experience.

Here we go again …
Try as I might to support small, independent, British businesses … sometimes these just do not deserve your time, effort or custom, ‘the Chocolate Detective’ being a point in fact.
Every time I have given this company my custom is there an issue: goods not sent, goods then ‘out-of-stock’, pitiful dim could-not-care-less customer service (‘Inspector’ (??!) Tom), appallingly difficult to use website, exorbitant postage costs for next day delivery that never happens … zero communication, customer always left to chase up what is happening.
Seriously, Chantal (Coady) you need to up your game … there are numerous problems with your company you need to fix. Stop floating through the air, pretending that customers will be okay with it because you’re an independent business.
Constantly let down by you. I just cannot be bothered with you anymore.
I’m beginning to wonder if this is why your previous chocolate company went insolvent.

I am so sorry to hear of your disappointing experience. I do understand that this response is way overdue, as we have not been monitoring Trust pilot. I would like to understand what happened on this occasion and any other experiences that you have had, to this end I am requesting information so we can investigate. I do need an order number so I can see what you bought or perhaps this is just a competitor? Thank you
