Bad bad experience

This university has absolutely victimised my daughter. No support whatsoever. I am concerned for those attending in September.
The architecture department are bullies please be careful.
They have gone out of their way to fail my daughter on everything. University halls doors do not lock her lock was broken for a year they did not fix it for the whole year after emails. The lifts in the halls were not working we were lugging everything up and down top floor.

Not impressive

I’ve watched several of my friends lectures to try to help her as she was struggling to engage. No wonder. Really poor quality presentation from lecturers where they are entirely uninterested with their subject, they read at you from a piece of paper for an hour rather than teaching or engaging their students. I was suprised that the quality of teaching was this poor when they grade you on your presentation and how you communicate ideas. I wouldn’t want to be a student here.

Do not come here

I had hope throughout the years that it would improve, that we would actually learn some skills at least in the final year, but i was soo wrong, looking back i wish i dropped out at the start of my first year and went somewhere else. I feel like i have wasted so much and not learned anything new at all. I learned a ton more in college and uni is meant to be level 6? The modules are boring and just centred around “politics” not actually learning valuable skills related to your field. We also don’t get much help with what we are told to have finished at the end of the module- we get vague mark schemes given to us and pretty much go by that with little support, i never understood what they wanted from us, we didn't have in depth lessons of how to get better marks or what they want to see from us, or any actual teaching apart from an hour session once a week (which mostly consisted of debates of clear politics) for a couple of months in one year, in which they went on strike most of the time for ( i understand the purpose of the strike but it would be appreciated if there was a way of it not impacting students so much as we literally pay for this). the course has also been very badly organised and planned, the timetable was never consistent and they would always end up changing it or adding sessions by email, some which were quite short notice, with students that have to have a job on the side, this is very problematic. Most sessions that we have regularly to sum it up is just coming in to university for a short conversation on what you are doing, not a lesson or teaching, which i personally find useless but i know some students like that, however i feel that we should have this WITH a lot more teaching not just mostly on its own. I have heard a lot from other students that they regret coming here, that they have not learned anything and they are miserable here, and it shows with poor attendance. They would mention the attendance and focus on it but not actually understand why the attendance is so poor in the first place, it seems like they do not learn from their mistakes as i have seen reviews saying the same thing from last year and the year before. Now this is just my opinion of how it looks on the side- they seem to care about attendance and useless sessions more than what the students actually want, and when asked for support they are not very helpful. For example, one of my modules- on which i attended the session for which was meant to be explaining what we need to do, was not made very clear- just skipped over the mark scheme, i asked a teacher a question and they completely ignored my question and concern and just proceeded to focus on the fact that i did not attend the chat they scheduled on my ideas for the module with them, when i literally had no clue what i was supposed to do, and referred me to go see someone else. This does not mean the staff are bad- most of them are very kind they just seem to not communicate with eachother, not plan teaching/sessions very well and seem quite lost on the fact of why the students are so miserable/why the attendance is so poor. I appreciated the teacher that referred me to the mental health team after we had a chat, and the team seemed helpful, however after they established that i needed support from the uni, nothing seemed to change, they did not make any adjustments, nor did they make any plans with me, one teacher didn't even know that i have extensions to my deadlines (when i was told that my situation would be forwarded to ALL of the staff on my course) the teacher emailed me saying that i have missed the main deadline of a module and saying they don’t see a learning support plan- so either poor communication or not looking for it properly, as i showed them proof of my plan which i found in seconds. I could go on and on about how awful the uni is, i feel like all my motivation is gone, i hate going there and have lost so much passion for my subject just because of the stress it has given me, and how i will not have the valuable improved skills or knowledge after finishing the course, which i expected to have. to sum it up this has sucked the life out of me and this review and 1 star is too generous.

The University Does NOT Deserve The Negative Reviews It’s Getting

I graduated from the University of Brighton last year (2023) with a first class BSc in Geography with Remote Sensing and GIS. I am baffled by all these negative reviews as I experienced the complete opposite. From start to finish, my lecturers and tutors were nothing but supportive, even when everything was virtual during COVID. I had the option to take a year out to do a Sandwich Placement year which I ended up doing and worked for the University in the Research and Knowledge Exchange department. The University saw a lot of potential in me and I took every opportunity they had to offer. Now a year on after graduating, I am working as an Energy Consultant and earn good money.
The only downside to the University I could think of is Mithras House and Watts building needs to be demolished. New buildings need to replace them to maximise the impact of “The Big Build” project the University did between 2019-2022. Mithras and Watts are the only things killing the Moulsecoombe campus’ look from being perfect.
Overall, Brighton is THE city to get that typical University experience that everyone wants. The University itself just made everything perfect for me.

To consider or not consider the University of Brighton…

Following attendance at the University of Brighton’s open day, I feel compelled to leave a review regarding my family’s experience on Saturday, 14th October 2023.

We made a three hour journey, of which we left our home address shortly after 6:00 am and in the dark. All was straightforward until we arrived at the postcode; the satnav did its job in getting us there but, of course, as to be expected, directed us to a residential area in full view of the University of Brighton’s multi-storey car park but, unfortunately, with a dead end in the way. As such, it was remiss of them to have not placed a marshal in situ (clearly needed as we were not the only family in this position) to direct us to where we needed to be. There were no marshals in the car park either.

When we found our own way around (which was par for the course for the remainder of our time there) and arrived at Elm House (opposite Watts Building) there was one student marshal who could have not looked more miserable and through her body language, gave the distinct impression she didn’t want to be there; she didn’t smile once in the numerous times we passed her. If ever an advertisement to not apply to the University of Brighton, a very unhappy looking student was it. The automatic doors did not work. The cafe was on the first floor, so for a university supposedly championing diversity, heaven help those with physical disabilities wanting to be independent but unable to manage the stairs and reliant on using a lift during exceptionally busy periods whilst desperately hungry or thirsty.

The law talk presented by two lecturers was certainly an experience: both evidently qualified (each having studied and gained PhDs) and articulate, but the content was disappointing, not least because the talk was predicted to last 30 minutes including questions and answers at the end, but we were advised there has never been time for this, which begs the question, why include this if, from past experience, there’s never been time? Also, the content of the slides was not something they cared to articulate in full and made this abundantly clear! Not helpful for those sitting from the middle to the back and unable to read them; all in all, a poor return to us, who had made the effort including a long journey to even be there.

I sincerely hope my youngest son does not opt for the University of Brighton amongst his shortlist. It is his decision, of course, but if our experience of their open day is to be taken with any reliable indication of things to come, this is not a good first impression. With its origins which can be traced back to 1858, it is not an unreasonable expectation for their open days to at least be organised and supported by happy looking students who actually want to be there. The free candy floss and popcorn would have passed muster if you are the type to be impressed by such gimmicks.

By contrast, the open day at the University of Lincoln on 23rd September 2023 was far superior in its execution of the entire event: the students were friendly, it was impossible to get lost around the campus for the sheer number of student marshals on hand and happy to help, and best of all, the law talk attracted an audience of around four times the attendance at the University of Brighton’s law talk. The larger capacity lecture was heaving, and given the way the lecturer engaged with his audience and cited examples of how the law touches our lives in an every day context, it is not difficult to see why.

Awful university with lazy…

Awful university with lazy unprofessional staff. The university gave student finance the wrong leaving date and despite dozens of emails and phone calls the university still haven't done anything. Now I have to make a formal complaint to the office for the adjudication of students or something. As for the course I did, it's just power point slides and not much else

UoB Animation BA (Hons) review

If I could rate the University of Brighton less than 1 star, I would. I have never had such a poor educational experience in my whole life, and I've been to some very bad schools. We are half-way through the course and the whole class agrees that we have learnt practically nothing and we are currently putting in multiple complaints and trying to take the university to court. The tutors couldn't care less about us, with one making comments such as "I think of this as a part-time job", and the communication between members of staff is terrible, resulting in a lot of issues for the students. A lot of our lectures are about really random topics like sexuality, feminism and racism (tons of virtue signaling), and are therefore nothing to do with animation, and we are here to learn practical skills so that we can become animators when we graduate, which does not look like it is going to happen. So far, until this semester, pretty much the entire course has been held online, so we are paying £9K a year for what we could've got for a third of the price at the Open University. This was completely unnecessary as other universities around the country were fully open to students, staying online was entirely the University of Brighton's choice which further impacted our poor education. The campus building looks abandoned and is not even properly maintained, with a lift we refer to as the "Death Lift" as it is frequently out-of-order, shakes and makes very disturbing noises (we are genuinely scared to use it), we have no on-site canteen and apparently the one coffee machine in the building hasn't been restocked since last Christmas and the coffee tastes terrible. When we have asked for extensions on our deadlines for perfectly valid reasons, we have been messed around by tutors and threatened to be capped when our situations have been completely out of our control. Furthermore, I have received direct disability discrimination from this university, with them treating me like any other student and completely failing to provide reasonable adjustments and meet my special needs. The staff seem very insensitive and seem to have no understanding of disabilities whatsoever. We have one tutor who uses our course as a promotional opportunity for her friends, and another who is nice but doesn't seem to have a clue what is going on most of the time. The university also frequently goes on strike, cancelling our lectures, and when I inquired about replacement sessions, I was told that these would not be happening. The amount of stress that this university has caused me and my classmates is extortionate, and I highly regret choosing to attend this uni. If you can avoid it, go anywhere else. I told my specialist study tutor (who is not part of the uni) about my experience at Brighton and she was in shock and told me that she has never heard of such a poor student experience before. The only good thing I have to say about the University of Brighton is that you have access to some really good societies as a student, but you can also be attending other universities in the area to have access to these, such as the University of Sussex, which I have heard good things about and students seem to be very happy there.

Bottom line: If you want to learn loads about the LGBT+ agenda and watch animations of naked women and male strip clubs, Animation BA (Hons) at the University of Brighton is perfect for you. If you want to learn how to animate and make sure you will actually be able to enter the animation industry in the future, choose a different uni.

They sell their famous name

When i arrived i couldn't believe how outdated the Uni was. I asked for a video camera (specifically an ex3 or something similar) and they gave me a full hd portable video camera which dated back to 2005. And it was a masters degree.

Another negative thing is, that the university's attitude towards crazy and churlish people depend on their race, gender and is never objective. One of my female colleagues threatened our module leader with suicide, in order to get an exhibition room which i have booked months ago. And guess what, she got it. She got it the last minute without telling me anything. It was only a week until the final exhibition, and i had to start doing a months work in just 4 days.

The modules are...mediocre. cant say i learned anything from it. I was doing digital media. I thought we were gonna be based on coding, design and 3d (just like anywhere in Europe) but the main point of every lesson was "fully generalised, obscured artistic performances (they had busted our balls with that woman, Marina Abramovic like it was some kind of holy grail), combined with virtue signalling (before it was cool).

I always believed Brighton is a finely wrapped shitstain, but i never expected to be SO CORRECT. Unfortunately i spent loads of money on housing and uni, which went totally to waste. Not gonna lie, it didn't give me anything, I didn't learn anything, most of the things i learned was self taught and they never respectwd the fact that we do not want to be pretentious artists but valuable media users, with aoftware and coding skills.
