Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 426 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers expressed dissatisfaction with the customer service, describing it as unhelpful, difficult to reach, and often providing poor communication and complaint handling. People also reported issues with payment processes, including unexpected account closures, difficulties with direct debits, and problems with promotional offers not being honored. Reviewers frequently mentioned that the service quality has declined significantly over time, with some feeling that the company no longer values long-standing customers. The high annual fees were also a point of contention, with many feeling that the value provided did not justify the cost, especially when compared to other card options. Some customers experienced unexpected credit limit reductions, even with excellent payment histories, which negatively impacted their credit scores and financial planning. Conversely, a small portion of people felt satisfied with the support experience and rewards, recommending the company for its benefits.

I sent an e-mail to the CEO (Steve…

I sent an e-mail to the CEO (Steve Squeri) for improper charging practices. I accepted an offer thru Delta Airlines for no fee first year on a American Express credit card.

Then I received a bill for $150. Next, I contacted your customer service, someone in India, who argued with me then stated yes ,I should not have been billed. The customer service person stated this happens all the time and many people are complaining. Also, the phone system failed to put me thru to customer service after repeating information six times. I requested the charge be reversed, customer service said NO. Pay the charge then we will credit you sometime later. I disagreed and stated I should not pay for a bill not owed.

I called back later that day and talked to a woman from the Philippines, who also said that I do not owe a fee. She was much more polite, but could not do anything.

Yesterday, I filled out a survey and asked for a reply from senior management.

Then American Express took $150 from my checking account; totally unacceptable.

I am requesting you make this right, Now!

Your company seems to have multiple, billing and customer problems. Are you aware of these issues?

Please reply ASAP I was issued a credit card

On June 5,2026 I talked to AMX Jennifer Forman about the improper charging issues.

The call did not go well and I found her very condescending.

1. She confirmed I should not have had money taken from my checking account ($150)
2. This is a problem which impacts thousands of customers
3. There is no estimated date to get this resolved
4. It is a system problem
5. There would be no check issued to refund my stolen money
6. A account credit would be issued, however, no estimated date
7. I advised her, I would be contacting the CEO again stating this was unacceptable. She said fine, the message would be just forwarded to her and I would get the same reply.
8. I stated that a complaint would be filed with the WA state Attorney General. She said fine
9. I stated that a complaint would be filed with Delta Airlines. She said fine.
10. According to the WA state Consumer Protection Act I can request triple damages.

I stated she was making a little deal become a giant issue. She also promised an email would be sent, however, there never was a email sent as promised. She said a phone call was good enough. Jennifer Forman doesn't get it. She is a terrible representative of AMX. I hope you the CEO gets it. This issue is not going away. All she had to do was issue me a check for $150.

Listen to the phone call, I hope it was recorded.

Definitely do not recommend

Got a notification two weeks before an international trip that they were conducting "periodic review" of my account, that my account was frozen, and that if I didn't make a substantial payment over 7 times my minimum payment due in the next 3 days (weeks before my actual payment was due), then they would reduce the balance on my card. The reason for the review stated was payment history but I have never made even a late payment on the card, and certainly never missed a payment and my payments are well over the minimum due. They stated I was also too close to the credit limit but had thousands of dollars available.

Pay $550 a year for an annual fee

Pay $550 a year for an annual fee, get nothing in return, 11 months in and a payment alert doesnt trigger, so they charge you a $29 late fee, $194 interest, threaten to take your points away if you dont pay an additional $35.

Definitely not worth the attitude from account rep. Indian male mid 30 being passive aggressively rude and act like I offended him by asking to cancel the card. The ego on these people is wild after 8+ years of doing business with them.

American Express Velocity Frequent Flyer "non-offer"

I have an American Express Velocity Frequent Flyer card - I wanted to check on whether it was eligible for Travel Insurance, which is was not. However, I was told if I upgraded to Velocity Frequent Flyer Platinum then it would qualify. I was also told that I would receive 1 x complimentary domestic return flight as part of the annual fee of $440 (apparently being with Amex for 37 years meant I could get this deal). I was attracted to this as I sometimes fly from Sydney to Perth and it seemed this would represent good value. So I paid for the upgrade; once I received the various links I checked on the flights available only to find Sydney to Perth and back was NOT available. Perth to Sydney and back was, which I found strange as the distance is the same. So now I've had to go through pain of cancelling and getting a totally new card! Are they trying to get new customers or lose existing ones, what a terrible experience!

Support Scammers over Cardholders

Extremely poor customer service from a bank you should be able to trust.

I purchased an item which turned out to be a fraudulent counterfeit from China. Despite providing ample evidence, AMEX declined my chargeback and sided with the scammers, stating they were 'loyal customers'. The chat support agent even stated that the "item appears to be inauthentic" yet they still refused to change their mind. This was even after the brand and manufacturer replied confirming the item as fake.

Raised a complaint which was closed shortly after as AMEX claimed to have done "nothing wrong", despite piles of evidence proving otherwise and of them supporting scammers. Asked them to raise this with their internal fraud team - was ignored.

They have now been reported to the Financial Ombudsman - all over a £30 charge. They have no sympathy or loyalty for cardholders, and are a predatory business. Very poor customer service who take a very serious lack of accountability.

American Express doesn't care about…

American Express doesn't care about it's card holders, it lets businesses charge you and never deliver a product. And all the business has to do is say that you signed a contract or a receipt, they don't have to prove that they actually provided a good or a service. Worst financial service I have ever dealt with. I would not recommend them to anyone.

Get out of Amex before it's too late

I am very surprised at the decline in Amex customer service. Based on my call with Amex Customer Service this afternoon and upon reading reviews after my call, I am very sad that I will have to leave Amex after more than 20 years and Excellent payment record. I had to recently retire for medical reasons and requested Amex lower monthly payment on one of my five accounts. They flatly said NO without any attempt to work with me. Please be aware that you many want to consider getting out of Amex before you need them to work with you in time of need.

Terrible customer experience

Despite having been an excellent client for many years, Amex hit me twice with ludicrous interest charges for minor delays in payments (1 day). I reluctantly accepted the first charge but asked for a waiver the second time. They only responded by copying and pasting their harsh terms in a chatbox.
Goodbye Amex, I'm taking my payments business to Revolut: faster, fairer, cheaper.

$80 fraud case is not worth the loyalty of a 44 year customer

Have been a customer for 44 years.
Recently purchased a clothing item for $80 from Barret & Mason. When I received the item it was a loose facsimile of the item pictured online and of very poor quality. The merchant advertised 30 day returns. Contacted merchant for return. After stalling by offering 10%, then 20% refunds to keep item they provided an address in China that would cost $300 for shipping.
After researching the merchant’s return address, found many warnings about scam. The location is a huge warehouse in San Jose, California used as a hub and clearing house for cheap products from China. Products having little to do with products advertised are shipped to customers and customers are seldom able to get their money back.
Contacted Amex claims to explain all of this and to request a chargeback due to fraud. Provided photos of the item received, screen prints of the item online and comments from some of the reviews online warning of scam.
Amex said that if I didn't like the product that I had the option to return it for refund. I reemphasized that a merchant who never acted in good faith by selling fraudulent goods and offering a return address that requires $300 shipping is clearly a scam. I also noted that if the product was as advertised and I simply decided that I didn't want it anymore that that would be a different case.
Amex refused to support me and suggested that I return the merchandise if I want a refund.
Very disappointed that Amex allows such callous people to decide the future of longtime customers.
Will instantly move my money out of Amex and will advise all of the corporations that I've helped to create over the decades to do the same. And they will.
Obviously $80 isn’t going to break the bank, but this is a matter of principle. Scam artists like Barret & Mason should not be allowed to operate. Apparently, the commission for an $80 purchase is worth more than a customer who has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for nearly a half a century. Have had frequent encounters like this with Amex over the past couple years. Something important is changing there. Guess I'll get out while the getting is still good. Good riddance Amex!!!

Very poor customer "service"

Very poor customer "service". I have a platinum card. I often have problems with my statements. Today I wanted help making travel plans and their office was closed on Memorial Day. When do they think people have time to make plans? A lot of hype, a lot of money, poor service.

American Express card servicing…

American Express card servicing especially with recurring charges authorization related matters is not customer friendly. I have requested Amex to place hard block on charges from an unknown merchant. My request was to stop those charges posting to my account in the future (placing hard block). They confirmed it’s taken care of. No luck. I continued seeing those transactions posted again and again. Their customer service is not good.

AmEx Denys another HYSA Sign-Up Bonus

They often have a promotion offering a cash bonus for opening a new High-Yield Savings Account. I open an account and despite following the terms, American Express is refusing to pay out the bonus. Public consumer data shows that AmEx has done this exact same thing with many other customers. they will claim that "you didn't click the link". You tell me how you prove that? Cause it seems to me that is exactly the game they are playing- "allegedly". I will no longer be banking with them. Bottom line If I can't trust them with this, why would I ever trust them with anything?-especially my money. Just saying. there are waayyyy better options.

Loyalty is a one way street

Been a member for more than 30 years. Received ransom letter saying my account was under review but if I paid them $2600 they would not review the account and just leave it alone. I declined to pay them, they reviewed what account and lowered the limit adversely effecting my credit by increasing debt to credit ratio. Account was never late or over limit until they made this change. I guess loyalty means nothing to them. Filed complaint with CFPB and their response is that they can do whatever the want, regardless of the harm it causes their customers. There are better cards out there with lower annual fees and better customer service, i would suggest avoiding American Express.

Abysmal service

Today I cancelled my Amex card after 23 years. It would take too long to explain the whole story, but in a nutshell I have been waiting 2.5 months for Amex to investigate fraudulent activity in my account and now they say they can’t give me any information about it and the fraud team are refusing to even speak to me. I keep being passed around rude, unhelpful people who don’t understand my case. Everyone I speak to tells me something different. The customer service is truly appalling. Today is the second time I have been left in tears out of frustration. Avoid Amex at all costs.

Atrocious - expect representatives spluttering down the phone at you, failure of complaint handling and overall chaos

Expect cough-spluttering representatives down the phone without apologising, failure and unwillingness to resolve your complaints in detail, and general mishandling and chaos from the very beginning.

What makes this review even more personal is that I even did work for these utter clowns. Decided to use their own services after some time, now i see the truth.

I was scammed sold on investment opportunities and I class myself as a vulnerable customer. Amex , in contrast to other creditors, sent me directly to collections, NCO Europe, with multiple disputed transactions. I'm dissatisfied with how they handled my complaint, didn't address the scam context at all. They said there was no service failure. What a load of bs! Probably written with Chatgpt.
Before the complaint outcome, I was even on the fraud team line and asked if my disputes are being looked into. They said yes, they are looking into everything. But months later, they are still chasing me for the debt from the investment scammer- the same kind of debt that was wiped from another financial institution which handled it properly!

Outside of the scam their card support was terrible anyway. Multiple times I tried to use the card on Paypal or whatever and it didn't go through. Tried immediately same transactions with my VISA issued cards. Worked straight away.

Their 'membership rewards' is just a lure /compromise for the terrible card support they have. Don't use this god forsaken business. They make up their pathetic rules. Use a financial institution with stronger/robust support in place with VISA or Mastercard.
