The Home Depot partnership has the…
The Home Depot partnership has the potential to be an excellent benefit for military families, and the savings can be substantial. Unfortunately, actually using the program was far more complicated and frustrating than it should have been.
I recently made a large Home Depot purchase through the Exchange using a newly opened MILITARY STAR account. The Exchange checkout repeatedly returned an “invalid CID” error when I tried to add the card. After considerable troubleshooting, I eventually discovered that the ShopMyExchange account holder and the name on the payment method now have to match.
I understand the security rationale for this requirement, and I don’t object to the policy itself. The problem is that there was no clear indication that this requirement existed. We have maintained a ShopMyExchange account for years, and our account already contained payment cards that predated this requirement. Because those cards remained in the wallet, there was no reason for us to know that the rules had changed until the checkout process failed repeatedly.
This is especially confusing for military families who commonly share household finances and payment methods. A simple message explaining, “The name on your payment method must match the ShopMyExchange account holder,” would have saved a significant amount of time and frustration.
The Home Depot partnership created another major inconvenience: ship-to-store is not available for Home Depot purchases through the Exchange. For large home-improvement purchases such as flooring, trim, doors, vanities, and other bulky materials, the inability to have an order shipped to the local Home Depot for pickup makes the program substantially less convenient.
Ultimately, we saved a significant amount of money, but we spent a considerable amount of time and aggravation figuring out how to use the benefit.
Save lots of money, spend it in time and aggravation capital.
The benefit is absolutely worth improving. Clearer communication about account/payment requirements, better integration between Exchange and Home Depot systems, and a ship-to-store option would make this a dramatically better experience.
