Best Telematic Insurer on the market for young/inexperienced drivers!

I’ve been insured with woop for my first year now and I couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Majority of the colleagues I’ve ever spoken to, through customer services, have been incredibly polite, friendly and helpful.

I was very worried about having telematic insurance, however woop have made my first year of driving a breeze. I have found that woop are a lot more lenient about the telematic data they take and don’t hound your monthly score as most insurers do. It gives you that sense of ‘freedom’ whilst still being safe on the road.

Although I am not renewing with woop for my second year, I would highly recommend this company to any young/inexperienced driver!

woop were also able to quote me a reasonably priced policy which is always a huge bonus, especially when many telematic insurers ask for some rather ridiculous and unaffordable prices. A lot of other companies wanted a quite extortionate amount for the first initial deposit, whereas woop did not do this.

The black box installation process was easy to arrange through Hyde Park Corner, however I am unsure if HPC are still the current installation company that woop use.

My only grumble I have would be now that my policy is ending, I am having to pay to have my black box removed. I believe the telematic box itself is physically wired into the car. Although the data collection will be discontinued, I would much happier if this could have been removed. I feel like woop/installation company could find a more cost effective way for policy holders to be able to remove their own black boxes AFTER their policy ends. I’m writing this review during the Covid-19 pandemic, so I have an issue with having a HPC engineer coming to the small town I live in. Possibly could be more of a safer way to have this removed without someone coming from across the country to simply remove the box.

However will all that said, woop is a fantastic insurer and I’ve never had any issues. Definitely will recommend to friends and family.

Good afternoon Bradley,

Thank you for taking the time to leave us with your feedback, we're happy to hear you've enjoyed your time being insured with Woop.

You make a good point about the removal of black boxes, especially in the context of the current Covid-19 situation. We'll take this away and look into the options around the devices going forwards.

Don't do it... Go elsewhere

So had a years insurance for my daughter. I also got a private plate for her and paid the admin fee only a week before they were due to issue a renewal (could have held back on changing plates and paying admin fee but decided to go ahead assuming renewal will be ok). Then they wrote to me saying they were unable to offer a renewal due to change of underwriters. So it's not my fault as I had every intention of staying with them. So I called to have the black box removed. They said 55 pounds to have it removed! I'm not the one cancelling or not renewing, it's their fault. Got some snotty advisor who just wouldn't get it. She then said it's now my property and "it's only connected to the battery and maybe you can disconnect it yourself or get someone to do it". Only if I knew where it was. I've already been behind the dashboard and can't see anything. Not only that, I don't want a unnecessary item using up battery power.Really poor service.

Good morning Faizal,

We’re sorry to hear that we weren’t able to offer your daughter a renewal premium, our underwriting criteria is under continuous review, and this can mean that on some occasions we're not able to offer drivers currently on cover with us a renewal. This doesn't mean that we wouldn't provide your daughter a quote in future.

In regard to the removal of the black box device, we do not normally remove the devices as our black box partner remotely disables the device, so it no longer provides any data. The amount of power that the devices use even when sending driving data out is very low. This is, as you have pointed out, to avoid a negative impact on the battery in the vehicle.

If you wish to have the device removed, then we have to send someone out to conduct the removal, which incurs a fee. The details of this are set out in our Terms of Business, which can be viewed here: https://woopcover.s3.amazonaws.com/1487846017.c160f62780c2a8c5e680b987a846982e.pdf

Poor comms all round

With regards to poor communication, Woop insurance takes the cake. Last year, a claim that had to be made with woop’s external claims handlers. It took nearly 2 hours a time to get through to a provider. Luckily it wasn’t at fault so could deal with the third party insurance directly.

Now it was time for renewal this year. Was not told until 3 weeks prior that I would not be able to renew my policy. This was due to ‘new underwriting criteria’. 2 years insured hassle free and now woop will not insure for a 3rd year.

I have now also been chasing woop up for nearly 3 weeks trying to get an appointment to get my black box removed. Having to keep calling in and still having 0 luck getting an appointment.

Terrible

My son has had a policy with Woop for 9 months now. All went well for the first few months and then the box suddenly stopped recording data. No drama, Woop arranged for a new one to be fitted and that was that. But that is where our problems started. After having a 100% driving score we started to notice that he was being marked down on every journey, but only for cornering! He was getting some really low daily scores (16% on one day!) and I was really concerned. We had his driving instructor to take him out to see if he could see any issues with his cornering...he couldnt. I raised this with Woop months ago and they said they’d raise it with the company that analyses the data. Heard nothing. Over a month ago I took the car out as an experiment and in the space of 4 miles I got....wait for it...84 cornering faults!!! 84 in 4 miles of pretty much straight road driving...hmmm ok!! I emailed Woop and received a reply saying they would raise it again with the black box people in Italy but still haven’t heard a thing and it’s still happening. So unfair as my son has worked really hard to keep a good score but now doesn’t see the point as it’s dropping by the day. He now feels like he doesn’t even want to drive because of this. Please do think very carefully before taking out insurance with them for your child, so stressful. Sort it out Woop!!

Extortionate renewal cost

I’ve been with Woop for two years, first year’s insurance was great at £960, second year’s insurance was even better at £440, however I’ve just been given my renewal price for my third year.

£940?! For a driver with no claims and a perfect driving score.

This is due to “a change in the underwriters” according to customer service so I’ve now cancelled my policy and will be going elsewhere.

Congratulations on losing a loyal customer!!! Great work!

Don’t use!

My insurance was meant to be renewed in two weeks and I got an email yesterday saying they are not renewing me. I have been with them for two years and due to the underwriters changing their terms and conditions they have now decided I cannot renew. I then called up to ask what the reason was and they said there has been no reason put down so the man kindly said he would ask the underwriters again for a valid reason. It’s absolutely unacceptable. For the first two years they were okay, not much communication but still decent but now I would never go back with them again!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY

took out insurance for my daughter with this company, half way through the insurance she changed her car. Rang them up and sorted it over the phone had to pay £165 for another black box to be fitted. Then no one contacted us to fit it, rang so many times all I got was sorry we’ll sort it, nothing happened. Then they send an email to say she’s in breach of contract for no black box! Several phone calls later and emails it gets fitted with half a day to go until they were going to cancel the policy! Clearly not our fault. The renewal was 3rd May where I had to keep sending emails as we had heard nothing and no renewal notice. 2 days before it is due they say we are not renewing your policy leaving us no time to sort anything. Thank god I cancelled the payments to them as on the day the insurance is due they try to take money from my account even though they can not offer insurance. Then send an email telling me this and saying for this reason we can no longer insure you!! You wasn’t going to insure us anyway so do not try taking money from my bank. I have been driving 32 years and have never come across a worse company. DO NOT TAKE INSURANCE OUT FOR YOUR CHILD WITH THIS COMPANY

Appalling after 2 years service

Woop was my first insurer in 2018 and I have never had a problem with them. Insurance was very cheap compared to others on the market and there was no curfew/mileage limits, what could go wrong?

I have just been given a letter to say my insurance will not be going ahead for the next year so I will have to find another insurer, with less than 14 days notice.
I phoned up to see why and have just been told by customer service staff that not even they have a reason for me. Just that 'it is what we have been told by the underwriters'.
Im now going to have to find another insurer which is gonna cost a fortune. If i had known that the next years insurance wasn't going ahead then I could have had time to find a better deal elsewhere. Caused unnecessary stress!

Good afternoon Paul,

Sorry to hear of the inconvenience this has caused you in regards to your policy renewal.

The criteria that we use is under constant review by our underwriters, and this can mean that in some instances we're not able to offer drivers currently on cover with us a renewal.

This wouldn't mean that we've cancelled your insurance, or refused you cover, so it wouldn't be something that you'd have to disclose to any other insurer.

Apologies again for the inconvenience this has caused.

so disappointing

so disappointing, never had a problem with woop, only ever recommended it to people and family for it to be so great. Had it for almost a year but then get an email saying my insurance cannot be renewed this year so i called them and they can’t give me a reason why except “they’ve changed their rules” and when asked what the rules are they can’t tell you because they don’t know? I just don’t understand why you can’t be renewed a quote when you’ve been driving perfectly all year?

Great black box insurance company

Great black box insurance company. The reason being there is not restrictions so I can drive how much I want whenever I want with no limitations. However I had one problem when I changed my car. I could not benefit to pay £65 to install the box by myself. Instead i had to pay £115 for a engineer to install it.

Very poor service

Very poor service. Not very helpful what so ever and then wouldn’t cancel my insurance when requested I had to wait 4 days to eventually get in touch with someone for them to then find it’s okay to charge me to cancel it when they didn’t give me what I wanted in the first place!!! Also still waiting 2 weeks later for my money back and still heard nothing and surprise surprise they won’t even answer there phone to me so I can find out where it is they said my remaining money can take up to 10 days yet they are still texting me “reminding me” to get my black box fitted before it’s too late even though I’ve cancelled with them !!! Never have I ever had such poor service and the people on the phones was very rude and unhelpful at all. Will defiantly be making sure none of my friends and family use these! They are a complete con they was more than happy to take my money but couldn’t even ensure my car!!!!
