Very uneven pitches - Good location
This campsite occupies a superb cliff-top setting, and we thoroughly enjoyed spending four nights here in our motorhome. We chose one of the grass pitches overlooking the cliffs, and the location was undoubtedly the highlight of our stay.
Whitby is within comfortable walking distance, with the scenic route into town taking you past the Abbey. For anyone wanting to explore Whitby without moving their vehicle, the site could hardly be better placed.
The grass pitches are generously sized, but ours was extremely uneven. We had to use levelling ramps beneath the wheels on one side of the motorhome, and even then it was difficult to get properly level. Unfortunately, this is the main reason we would not currently consider returning.
With a programme of improvements to level the pitches—and ideally the installation of more gravel hardstanding pitches—the owners could turn this into an outstanding campsite worthy of its exceptional location.
A small number of hardstanding pitches are already available, although these appeared to be predominantly concrete. Personally, I would not choose one, as the surface could make it difficult to secure an awning or anything else requiring pegs alongside the motorhome.
All the essential facilities were provided and were perfectly adequate, although the overall site did not feel quite as well organised as those operated by the Caravan and Motorhome Club or the Camping and Caravanning Club.
The toilet and shower blocks were clean, modern and appeared to have been refurbished fairly recently. They are located centrally near the reception and shops, with a useful shortcut available from the pitches. Entry is controlled by an access code, which is entirely understandable as the Cleveland Way runs directly through the campsite.
The site is clearly popular and seems particularly suitable for families, with children’s play areas available. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our visit.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay enormously. The spectacular cliff-top setting and convenient walk into Whitby are major attractions, but the badly sloping grass pitches are a significant drawback. Unless these were improved, we would be unlikely to return
