I bought my Range Rover Evoque in March 2024 from Vertu Land Rover Chesterfield. I was a very smug Land Rover owner, having previously owned three — all fantastic cars. Sadly, this time I rolled the dice and bought a lemon. A very expensive, very heavy paperweight.
On the day of collection, I was asked to re-sign a paper contract, despite having signed electronically the weekend before. “We just need your signature here, Mrs S.” I trusted the salesperson and signed after checking the monthly figure. What I later discovered was that it was a different contract. I had made a payment on my part-ex vehicle, yet the dealership contribution had been reduced without my knowledge. When I challenged this, I was told nothing had changed — but strangely, no one could produce the original electronic contract. A sea of red flags.
Then came the key situation. I was told there was only one key but the other would “arrive within a week.” In reality, it didn’t exist and had to be ordered on back order. I waited around 12–13 weeks.
The grand reveal was equally disappointing. Instead of a showroom handover, I was taken to a side entrance near the repair bays because it was a “used approved” vehicle. The car was covered in stone chips, the parcel shelf was broken, there was rust internally, and water trapped inside the lights. I said I didn’t feel like driving it away. I should have trusted my instincts and walked away — but I didn’t. I was reassured it would all be sorted.
Within days, I noticed a knocking noise going over a tiny dropped curb — in a 4x4. The spoiler rattled when closing the boot. The car went back in to address paint, the parcel shelf, headrest, key and other issues. I was told it would be about a week.
It was 12 weeks.
Yes, I had a courtesy car — but that is not the same as your own vehicle. Communication was poor and often condescending. Eventually, mid-June, I was told to collect it — still without the key.
The bonnet respray was shocking. The stone chips looked like they’d been filled with black nail polish, and white wax residue sat in every dent. After quoting Land Rover’s own paint standards (visible defects within 2 metres should be rectified), they agreed to respray it properly. Back to another courtesy car.
By the end of June, after escalating to management, I was offered an extended warranty and £500 as a goodwill gesture for the finance “mishap.”
Then autumn arrived. Heated seats didn’t work. The display intermittently failed. I waited a month for diagnosis — only to be told parts would need ordering. Meanwhile, the “health check” advised it needed two litres of oil. Odd, considering it had sat in their workshop for months.
January came, the seat was fixed — and shortly after, the orange service light appeared. A sensor fault meant it wouldn’t pass its MOT. It was repaired — and yes, another two litres of oil were added. Four litres in under four months.
In August, it worsened. Loss of power. Grinding noises. Warning lights. Roadside assistance advised taking it in. My selling dealer refused recovery there so it went to another Land Rover dealership on a low loader.
The next day: “We need authorisation to add oil.” Six litres since November. I’m no mechanic, but that doesn’t sound normal. I was assured there were no leaks and it wasn’t burning oil. Yet by December it was back to minimum. A technical ticket was finally logged, and I was told to check oil weekly. The Evoque doesn’t even have a low-oil warning light.
In January 2026, I returned to discuss everything — only to be told the vehicle did not have a full service history. There was a 30,000-mile gap. Had I known that, I would never have purchased it.
Now, February again, oil at minimum. More top-ups. Excessive oil consumption confirmed. And when I try to call to discuss the ever-growing list of issues? No returned calls.
Owning this Evoque has been like rowing a wooden boat through a storm — except the boat wouldn’t require gallons of oil to survive.
If you’re going to roll the dice on a Land Rover, my advice would be: don’t.
And if Vertu Land Rover Chesterfield happen to read this — perhaps the Used Cars Sales Manager could finally return my call.
EDIT
My review is factual. Everything in there is the truth. The initial concerns were raised on the day of purchase yet Vertu fail to acknowledge that the car is a lemon. I will now be contacting LandRover, the Car Ombundsman, Vertu head office and the tv Show Rip Off Britain.
UPDATE 2: phone call received from Paul. The car is hopefully being looked at by Vertu this week. I will post a further update.
UPDATE 3: The car is booked in on Thursday to be looked at

Great help in deciding which model we would find the most useful. Had a test drive in the relevant models.
Brought down the car from Leeds with no option to buy if it was not suitable.
Fantastic help from Danielle in locating the car.

We had a very good experience with Vertu Land Rover.
Isla was so friendly, helpful and professional. Happy with vehicle would recommend this dealership.

We knew what we wanted when we visited the Chesterfield branch and our sales person, Isla, helped us.
What made our experience especially good was that Isla could of quite easily of proceed as sold us that vehicle but introduced us to a stock item, that was higher spec and Will extra dealer contribution, lowered our expected payments.
I understand that stock items have to be moved on, it making us aware and giving the option meant we ended up with a much better car.
Additionally, when we collected the car, not only was our car perfectly presented but, as we had our grandchild with us, they presented him with a Lego Defender, really special.

30th of December 2025 , I had the pleasure of getting our Range Rover Sport given its Winter check.
Whilst waiting, was invited to have coffee or other drinks and was regularly asked if I was comfortable.
Since buying the car we always used Vertu because the level of service is always higher than others.
On completion, the payment system is private and swift.
In the Winter Pack there are items like a mug, various types of additives for the windscreen and water bottle.
Also , there is a set of plugs and SIM card holder.
My question is, what are the plugs for? If I plug into a laptop or phone nothing happens.
Can any help me by explaining what the plugs are for???
Kind regards Brian

Someone actually showed some genuine interest in me when I showed up at the showroom. Isla was brilliant and took time out to show me the car I was interested in and also arranged a test drive at short notice. I was also given a fair trade in price and nothing was too much trouble in trying to source the specification I requested.

I visited vertu chesterfield to sort a fault on my defender 90 and enquire about an upgrade to a 110. I have to say I didn’t expect such attentive and professional customer service that I absoloutely experienced from the moment I walked through the doors. Both David & James were amazing in dealing with my cars repair and upgrading it to a 110 . I made quite a few time additional and time consuming requests , but everything I asked for was done for me. I was kept informed at each stage, made to feel valued as a customer and feel I had a fabulous experience. Every staff member I met was so lovely and I highly recommend vertu chesterfield to anyone!

We reserved our Range Rover Velar online out of hours and the very next day we had a callback from Lee Maisfield, he has been so accommodating with the whole buying process. This allowed us to ensure the car was for us and without a no pressure attitude he made us feel so at ease. The car Had some repairs it needed and he sorted them out in a quick timeframe, overall his service and Land Rover chesterfield has been exemplary. The car was prepared very well for the handover and looked beautiful.
We live in Northampton but we would happily now drive up to chesterfield now for repairs, services due to their customer service.
