My experience with TravelWiFi – Spain rental (Sept 2025)

I rented a TravelWiFi hotspot for use during a trip to Spain (Sept 13–20, 2025). Unfortunately, the device did not work for the first few days despite multiple attempts to connect. I contacted customer service on September 15, and while they were responsive, it took until September 16 — after several configuration tries — to get the APN settings right and have the hotspot working properly.

Once it was finally set up, the connection was reliable and served our needs well for the remainder of the trip. I returned the device at Madrid airport on September 20 before flying home to the U.S.

I requested a refund for the three days the device was unusable but have not received it as of October 4, 2025.

This review reflects my personal experience with TravelWiFi — others may have smoother or different experiences. The product worked well once configured correctly, but initial setup issues and the pending refund request left me somewhat disappointed overall.

Doesn’t work when you need internet access the most

I’m in my 3rd week of my European trip. I’ve landed back at Heathrow and I want to order an Uber while walking to the pickup point. Ever since the plane touched down, my phone shows 2 bars and 4G, yet I cannot access anything. So, off the plane I connect to Heathrow’s WiFi. But after collecting my luggage and heading to the pickup point, I lost the WiFi so I’m trying to use Uber to book my ride and no ability to let the app show the route and choices. So after walking and reaching the pickup point I don’t have a booked ride. So now I try to reconnect with the airport WiFi. I succeed and I’m able to finish booking my ride.
This inability to access the internet at crucial times throughout my travels on this trip lead my to write this review. At the beginning I contacted their support. They would reply to me with the question “Do you still have the problem?” I would say yes. I’d get a reply a day later with the same question!!!!

Never again!

I deeply regret not taking notice of Travelwifi's many negative reviews! I had used it many times when it was WifiVox without a glitch.
We rented a HotSpot with unlimited plan. The device was not only not delivered on time but NOT AT ALL throughout the rental period!
Travelwifi chat bot was AI at its worst and the Support team via email simply useless.
The pick up location at the Estacio de Sants, Barcelona is run by an unrelated company and its long suffering but very kind staff were powerless to help.
The instructions given by Travelwifi for the pick up location at the station, are not clear at all. Even my being very fluent in Catalan and Spanish and knowing the station well, did not help. The Left Luggage office as it happens, is situated outside the main concourse of the station, out on the street, with steps/lift down to the carpark. It is within the car park, and is not well signposted.
Unfortunately, and after having been a regular customer of the former Wifivox for more than 15 years, I will not use nor recommend Travelwifi anymore as I cannot afford this happening again.

Hands down worst customer service

Hands down worst customer service experience I’ve had. I don’t usually go out of my way to write reviews for anything but I feel compelled to warn against what is in my opinion, if not fraudulent, at least negligent beyond measure.

I booked a portable wifi device for a week during my trip in spain. I chose to pick up the device in Barcelona at the train station, and there were no problems with my choice of timing and location at checkout.

We went to pick up the device upon arrival (they use a third party for the deliveries in Barcelona), and it wasn’t there. The guy behind the desk said they hadn’t gotten any deliveries in a week, and to call or contact Travelwifi directly.

I tried calling both the US and Spainish lines, but no one ever picked up. Not looking good. I got a hold of someone via the website chat. They said they had not been able to make the shipment yet, but assured me it would be shipped the next day, and arrive the day after that. Frustrating of course because of the wasted time heading to the pickup and 2 days then without the device I had paid for.

I called reached out the next day to confirm the device had been shipped, and was ignored for most of the day. Finally I asked again and they said they were unable to confirm with logics. Failure #2.

I point out that we are headed to Madrid the next day and can pick it up at the office there. Ronald assured me that should work just fine. Of course, once we get to Madrid and locate the office, no one answers the door. I ask security if anyone ever works at that office, and they indicate rarely is anyone there. Unbelievable.

Maybe in other countries things are running sound. But if you are going to Spain, STAY AWAY. They will lie and gaslight you and waste your time.

I’ve been assured I’m getting a refund but I’m not sure I trust them to do that. I’ll be reporting the charge to my bank as fraud because that’s what this company is, a fraud.

I didn't have WiFi for over 8 days

I didn't have WiFi for over 8 days. Horrendous customer service as not only did it take 1 day to return a message via email, they couldn't figure out what the issues were. Do not use them! Better options out there.

Excellent eSIM and service

I had an eSIM for France for one month. It was arranged at the Paris Opera store and worked very well. Service was outstanding and friendly. A month later, I had to change to a European one. I had difficulty installing it through the app. Customer support via email (Emmanuelle) was rapid and excellent. Very happy with the service and function of the eSIM.

Please don't waste your money

Please don't waste your money. It is not a steady stream of internet, and the start-up is expensive. I work from home, and I have to reset my box multiple times. I started out with the small white box, which I was told could be the problem. So I upgraded to the black box for $279. Well, guess what? It's a bit better, but I still lose internet multiple times a day.

Rather expensive, but great pocket wifi with VPN incl.

I rented a pocket wifi for 2 weeks for my travel to China. Wifi worked pretty well everywhere, even in small villages in the mountain. The device has a great battery too. A great surprise was that this pocket wifi had a VPN included! So all our app were working as usual. The only negative point is the price. It is quite expensive (153.- CHF for 14 days).

Useless

This device was completely useless for three quarters of Costa Rica. Although they were quick to respond to email, they were unable to improve the service and I spent a week in a foreign country with no internet to assist in getting around and communicating.

Pretty Decent

I bought my Sapphire 2 Matte in 2021 at a retailer in Qatar. The setup was easy and I was able to have 2-3 people connect to it and it still worked well. I was over there for 5 months and had to top it off about once every week. The app was easy to navigate back then and even with the new app, its still easy to navigate and purchase data. I have had this hotspot for 3 years now and my husband recently went on a trip to England. I gave him the hotspot and bought the 30 GB plan for him. He was in England for about a month and the data plan lasted the entire month. The battery still worked well and lasted through out the day.

The app is still easy to use and adding a card and purchasing data plans is easy and painless. I plan on taking it on a trip with me and looking forward to using it.

Stay away from TravelWiFi

In April 2024 we rented a pocket WiFi from TravelWiFi in Zurich Airport. It was completely unusable. Even in the center of Zurich. We returned it after 2 days and for a refund. They gave us a partial refund but they took it back after 3 weeks. Incredible.

Listen to the 1 star reviews on this…

Listen to the 1 star reviews on this company. They sent me a faulty portable hotspot 3 days prior to my departure day for travel. The USB charger was broken so I had to use my own to charge the hotspot. Customer support advised that I charge it for at least 4 hours when I reported that the device wasn’t powering on. After 4 hours, I tested the device again and it powered on for a few minutes before dying again. When I requested for a full refund, they told me they could only offer a partial refund once they’ve received the device back because the customer is responsible for shipping costs even though they sent me a faulty device so it makes no sense why I have to pay to return a device that doesn’t even work.

While I was overseas in the UK, I received a notice that my device was successfully returned but when I contacted customer support again to ask them when I would receive my refund, they gave me a roundabout answer saying that they had to go through approval from their Account department first, which again, makes no sense since I had returned the device, never got to use it and had to buy an emergency travel pass with my mobile company, and I paid for shipping and handling.

I ended up disputing with my bank to get my money back, which I highly recommend doing for anyone who has purchased Travel WiFi recently because otherwise, I doubt they will honor refunding the customer and taking responsibility for their faulty products.

Sapphire 3 fail im Greece

I purchased a Europe sapphire 3 and a 40gb Europe data plan for a trip to Greece. The device powered on upon landing in Greece but we didn't get service. I spent the next 1.5 days emailing with customer service who kept telling me they were working on a fix. They finally admitted there was no fix and switched to saying they had a Europe wide network issue. They refunded my service plan but refuse to refund the device. They want me to take the device back to my home country and continue to troubleshoot. I explained that I purchased the device to use on Europe, and it doesn't work, and I can't understand why they would make me keep a device that doesn't work as promised. I would recommend avoiding this company

Device did not work

Do not buy from TravelWIfi unless you want to waste your money. The hotspot that they sent did not work at all. I spent $75 on a product that was completely useless.
If they sent me a full refund I would have been a little more understanding, but all they did was give me $20. That shows me that they do not care about our experience and they are probably sending the defective hotspot to another person right now.

Poor customer experience, limited lifespan

I purchased a "Teppy" in 2021 and was able to use it for one trip in Europe. It worked ok (nothing great) for that trip, but seemed to burn through the data much more rapidly than a regular data plan. In other words, kind of expensive compared to data usage that I normally have. Ok, guess I can live with that to have a little extra coverage while travelling abroad. Two years later, I want to take another trip abroad and I purchase more data. Does it do me any good? Nope. No connection to the internet. Customer service tells me to move around. Obviously, that's not the problem. Then I'm told I need to download and install new firmware for the device. Did that. The result? Nothing. I purchased a device that can only work once, with no possibility of updating. After wasting an afternoon with an alleged "customer service" department that could not help me to salvage the device, I asked for a refund of the worthless data packages I had already purchased. They wouldn't even do that, since their self-imposed deadline for requesting a refund had "expired." Don't waste your time or money with these folks.

Don't buy wifi units from TravelWifi.

I rented wifi devices from Tep Wireless (now called TravelWifi) for my trips to England, France, Germany, Netherlands and Belgium since 2014 before free public wifi was everywhere. The service was always prompt and the data transfer rates were always enough to find directions or make calls on the fly. Since I never had a problem, I bought a unit in January 2020 for some big trips planned that year.

Unfortunately things didn't go as planned due to COVID, so I didn't have a chance to use the Wifi unit until June 2023 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Sadly, the unit didn't work even after many hours on the phone with TravelWifi customer service. Even though I already bought a data package, the unit kept giving me the following error, "Hi, it's AT&T. It looks like you want to use data but have none available. You may need to change to a plan that supports data for your device. To check your plan and manage your account, go to att (dot) com/myprepaid." My issue was escalated several times but no one could resolve this issue. Finally, they settled on telling me I was out of any serviceable area in Huanacaxtle, just outside of Puerto Vallarta and gave me a credit for my data to use elsewhere. My trust in this company was crushed.

Then, I tried updating the firmware this year on my Sapphire 2 wifi unit (per their email notification) but had to contact customer service to verify the unit was updated. Without any purchased data packages, you can't even check the unit on your own apparently. I finally decided that I couldn't trust my TravelWifi Sapphire 2 unit to work in South Korea later this year and asked for a return/refund. I was outside of the return window even though COVID prevented travel, so I had my account deleted.

My cellphone company has international data options at similar or better prices to TravelWifi, so I'm going with them or just buying a prepaid SIM in the country I'm visiting. TravelWifi was a good company as Tep Wireless but ever since the name change everything has gone downhill. Do not buy wifi units from TravelWifi.

Disappointed… again

Last month I rented one of your devices and it was missing the password! I had to call the company to get the password because it had been rubbed off and one of your employees was too lazy or too stupid to put on a fresh label. This month I have rented a device that neither charges nor works. I paid for the fastest speed and the device will not charge even with another cord. TRP clearly does not care about their product or customer satisfaction. The person packing the item didn’t even include an envelope! In past years TEP had always provided good service and a good product but the company must have been bought by someone who neither cares about customer service or the quality of the product. If I could give a lower rating than 1 star I would. I’ll be curious to see if this review ever come up on their site!
