Warning: The British Gas "Broker Trap" – Avoid Verbal Contracts

I am writing this to expose a sophisticated scam involving third-party energy brokers acting under the guise of British Gas. Based on my experience and many others, they follow a calculated "cooked story" to exploit innocent customers.

The Strategy:

The Hook: They call claiming to be from (or affiliated with) British Gas, offering refunds or "better rates" to test how "naive" or responsive the customer is.

The Trap: Once they have your trust, they maneuver you into a verbal contract. In the energy sector, these are legally binding and incredibly difficult to overturn.

The Denial: When you try to cancel, British Gas washes their hands of the situation, claiming they cannot intervene because a "third-party broker" handled the deal.

The Reality:
You will find yourself trapped in a legal and financial loop. Getting out of these contracts requires legal advice, immense mental stress, and significant time-none of which is repayable. These scammers thrive because they know a legal battle costs more than the average person can afford.

My Verdict:
British Gas should be held accountable for enabling and rewarding these predatory brokers. Their lack of oversight is effectively an endorsement of these scams.

STAY AWAY from telephone energy brokers. If someone calls you claiming to be from British Gas offering a deal, hang up and call the official customer service line directly.

I was tortured in the name of British…

I was tortured in the name of British gas, called in my office, spoke to colleague recorded the call and on a surprise that they have entered us into a 3 year contract. Approached the ombudsman and got it removed. BEWARE OF THIS FRAUDSTERS.

We have recently moved to Total Eco for all our business utility supplies, we now have clear costs and savings for our gas and electricity supplies. The communication was clear and jargon free, they explained they were a broker for all utility suppliers but advised we stay with our existing provider on a new fixed tariff. We have a second business which will be renewing with Total Eco as soon as the contracts are due.

Great service.

Claimed to be British Gas

This company fraudulently claims to be British Gas Business. Avoid. The first call is "Hi, this is British Gas, we can see you're due a refund on your account" - they use this call to gather sensitive info about your account and meters.

The second call is "Hi, this is the British Gas renewal team", where they use the info from the first call to seem like the real deal.

There's no change to the direct debit due to the nature of their third party agreement - BG still takes the DD and Total Eco get commission. But your contract will NOT be with BG, it will be with Total eco and BG will refuse to deal with you once it's locked in.

If you're reading this then it's likely you've had a similar call. If you're quick you may be able to contact BG business renewals and renew with them directly, and/or stop any transfer to a third party. They will have the final say on any changes.

If not then be ready for solicitors, energy ombudsman and weeks of hassle.

After reading reviews about this company, I felt the same. I have the same experience, these guys are experienced in trapping, let me quote my recent reply from them

"Thanks for your email apologies for the delay, this was due to annual leave within the business.
After final review we would not be able to cancel the contract as we feel it was made clear to you that it would be locked in and confirmed.

You can put your complaint directly to British Gas so they can investigate the complaint as they would also have the say on cancellation.

Adam, Oliver, Sarah are the common names used by them in their communications and they will deliberately delay the process so energy company will issue an invoice. Please note no one will get a CCJ if you do not pay this invoice, make sure you dispute with proper documents and evidences. No win no fee solicitor has taken over my case.

Bad experience from Total Eco

Bad experience from Total Eco, just been here after having this bad experience. I was called by Mr. Adam and informed a refund for over charging. Then next call was picked up by colleague who was informed about a rate plan. The next thing what we came to know was a contract on our name on British gas with brokers name and contact number was provided in that letter. Called in British gas who refused to help because broker was involved in it. When I called broker one Mr. Oliver answered the call on his mobile phone and informed the problem will be sorted and I will be contacted soon. I waited for few days, then I tried calling again the calls went unanswered. A week later as soon as the call was answered Mr. Oliver answered apologised quoting my name without me telling the issue. This sounds like the calls went unanswered was deliberate. An invoice of £5005.90 has been issued. I am looking to take this matter to the court making the British gas as another partner in this conspiracy.

Definitely scammers operate this…

Definitely scammers operate this company, Mr. Oliver called up our landphone and spoke to a colleague and taken as a verbal contract. When you call them back they will deliberately delay the conversation to pass the cancellation of the contract cooling period. Never speak this contractor over the phone, make sure you disconnect the line even if they say British Gas. We have requested British gas to remove this company from the list of brokers, everyone please make sure beware of this company that you can get trapped easily in their scam.
