GO ELSEWHERE

Made reservation for 8/5 - 8/8 for a Peugeot 5008 automatic minivan on October 28th of last year. I looked at the reservation and it now shows "Undisclosed Vehicle" and also doesn't state unlimited miles. I've sent two emails and a What's App message directly to Iceland office with no response. I contacted Thrifty customer service and was told that they no longer carry this type of vehicle and to get another vehicle with an automatic to hold six people would be over double the price!! I guess I know why they didn't return my messages. They would have just had me get there to find out that I'm screwed!! GO ELSEWHERE!!!

Oh dear

Car in good working order and clean. Car hire site is off airport, so some difficulty finding it on return. Friendly transfer driver.

Lady at reception was rude on pickup and drop-off. Another person in reception was friendly and helpful.

I incorrectly received a parking fine 1000 ISK with a 4000 ISK admin fee from Thrifty! Still not received money back 10 weeks later.

You decide.

I will try to keep this short… we spent…

I will try to keep this short… we spent two days in Reykjavík and rented a car through thrifty. On our way to drop off the car we had some confusion and were running late. Our shuttle driver to get us to the airport from the shuttle was so helpful getting us there quick and so nice. Then we start walking in and realized we left my back pack in the rental car(that had not only monetarily valuable items but things I needed for the rest of our trip). The shuttle was already gone. We were already late and knew if we tried to get the back pack we would likely miss our flight. Just before going through security thrifty called my partner to tell him and offered to send the driver back and to security to give us the bag. We were still worried about cutting it close but accepted the offer. So happy he rushed us the bag and was so nice.
I was still worried about missing the flight.
We made the flight! I had my things including expensive and sentimental jewelry, personal items I needed, makeup, and more!
Thank you to Darius R, Tomas B & Ugne J for saving me!!

Worst company ever

Worst company ever! They got an assigntment with booking.com but they arent accepting their insurance! I got charged 20€ from booking.com for full zurich insurance but thrifty want 240€! Good start on vacation. They offer shuttletransport nice thing but only in their opening time! So thats mean they accepted my drop off at 4 am but I cant get from their company to airport, only with taxi. So another 20€ gone there. Everything bad about them. Use other companies!

Would not recommend

We had a negative experience with Thrifty!
The rental company is located 3.5km from the airport. Although they offer a shuttle service, we could not use it on our return flight. Our flight was at 6:10am so the shuttle bus was not yet available and we had to pay 3500 isk (+/- 25 euros) for a cab (for 3.5km!!!).
We had booked the car through booking.com and we had taken insurance with the car. When picking up the car, the Thrifty staff kept insisting that we get insurance with them (300 euro surplus!) Since they supposedly had no business with the insurance offered through booking, they strongly urged us to take the insurance with them. They made it seem that they would find damage no matter what. The salesperson admitted that this had led to discussions with customers on several occasions, but they are not addressing the problem! Due to a lack of transparency about this, our vacation began in a disappointing way!

I would not recommend Thrifty because of this! The car was otherwise fine. It was a new car and it was well equipped.

NEGATIVE

NEGATIVE: You need to buy from them the highest additional insurance otherwise they always find some damage and charge you. They have shuttle bus because they are not in and by terminal. They location is quite fare so you will lose time to get the car (1hr). On the Keflavik airport there are much better options !!! DON'T LOOSE MONEY AND TIME!!!!

Easy to deal with.

There are so many dodgy operators at Keflavík but Thrifty (and Geysir) are not among them. And they don't jack up the prices sky-high for a walk-in.
Shuttle to/from the departures terminal was very quick; staff were helpful (kudos to Renata(?) who processed the return efficiently whilst dealing with multiple people stuck in the blizzards of that weekend). There was no hard sell for additional insurance as I had my own and the car was a very new hybrid (though I couldn't work out why the battery showed 0%?)

I rented a car in July 2019 in…

I rented a car in July 2019 in Reykjavik. When I gave it back the employee told me there was a (tiny) crack on the windscreen. I was charged € 1142 for a replacement of the windscreen when repairing the tiny crack would have been very inexpensive and the cost of a new windscreen is not as high as that--even in Iceland. I saw later that what looks very much like a windcreen scam is common in Iceland. Still a bitter pill for the end of a trip in a beautiful country.

Excellent car rental

We were really satisfied with Thrifty. We were picked up at the arrival in the airport even though it was 6 AM. He took us the two minutes to the office where are car was ready for us. Rather new - worked well. Same when we came back. No problems. We had a parking ticket while in Iceland which they paid from our credit card after writing us an email.
