One troll rules supreme

Used to be a great news source, sadly descended into a second rate "X". One troll, brendan o brien, more or less owns the site, he's on there 24/7 slandering, insulting & trolling away over every article. Pity really, as it once was a great entertaining & educational website. Very few genuine posters these days, just two or three trolls vying for the most thumbs ups. The funny thing is the site is bombarded with begging requests for subscriptions yet no on treats it with any seriousness. It's really just a cesspit, ok for a giggle now and again. Best avoided

Annoying ads

Always had the journal as my main news source for irish news. It was very annoying when nearly every comment section was disabled but now with these ads popping up covering the whole page ive uninstalled the app. Couldn't have made it more annoying and I hope it fails in the near future

Been DEAD a while

This website, journal.ie, breathed it's last sine time ago. Old news, terrible proof reading with a steady dessert of multi account trolls spewing their bile & self loathing.

Now a comment platform for MAGA-wanna-be blowhards

The content is fine, often with angles and op-eds you don't get anywhere else. A great range of material, and regular updates. But it's become a comment platform for MAGA-wanna-be blowhards, hate-mongers, racists, and the "Ireland is full" crowd. Ireland is full of far-right blowhards on the Journal. Humourless, dull, sickening, nasty. The owners of this platform need to take action before it goes the way of Broadsheet.ie. Avoid it. Introducing the thumbs down feature will make no difference. Trolls need validation. A thumbs-down is engagement with such sad cases.

Woke establishment propaganda

An absolute cringe fest of indoctrinated DCU interns thinking they are hard hitting journalists. They are the complete opposite, operating in an overton window between left and hard left. Extremely biased and sanctimonious. May aswell the government itself.

Down but not out.

The site was once a strong source of news, current affairs, and sports coverage, sometimes even offering stories you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Unfortunately, in recent years it has gone downhill. The comment sections are often dominated by aimless squabbles, while the content itself feels stale or recycled from other outlets.

That said, the site isn’t beyond saving. With more active moderation and an investment in fresh journalism, encouraging hungry, up-and-coming reporters to go out and find original stories rather than rehashing old ones, TheJournal.ie could regain its place as a valuable and informative resource. It used to be good, and with the right effort, it could be again.

Great reporting, ruined by multi-account trolls

TheJournal.ie has great news, current affairs, sports, and other coverage, some of which is unique. Access to the content (Irish and International) is free. The staff writing is professional, backed by syndicated material, but there is an overreliance on stock imagery. The reader polls are fun and topical. However, the comments section is a cesspit of multi-account toxic trolling, personal nastiness, and deliberate provocation, some of it extremely offensive, with no holds barred. Devoid of common sense and decency, the failure of the Journal management and owners to moderate comments in response to its content means the credibility of editorial decisions and commitment to facts is compromised. Best avoided.

Don't believe the moaners…

Don't believe the moaners with their right wing agendas, who love to complain about 'woke' this and that. It's good at what it does, not great but good.
'Some' people like to complain about their views not being aired. The Journal is a private company and has the right to publish comments if it wishes. A newspaper does not have to publish every letter to the editor they receive, do they? No, they edit.
Very good at breaking Irish news, too frequent with copy and paste sources, some annoying content but overall a good and trustworthy news service.

Establishment rag

A bit of a joke of a "news" outlet, comments closed on any news they dont want real people opinions on, shill writers pushing the gov narrative constantly.....today being a perfect example re: Tucker Carlson and Conor Macgregor meeting.....disgusting rag that has the audacity to constantly have the begging bowl out!

TROLLING heaven , out of date news

Rubbish news site and comments board.....news is usually out of date and then the comments section is awash with juvenile trolls. It's just 1 troll with a gazillion different accounts. Much better than it's given credit for

Usually well researched and with pertinent opinions based on fact. Don't know why so much negativity in the reviews here. I don't claim to be a professional journalist but this is my opinion. Considering it's essentially free content you can't ask for more
