Beware!!

Beware!!! Unfortunately I would not recommend this place, after a few sessions my dog was forced to sit and was badly handled which resulted in her back legs being aggressively pushed down by the trainer. . On one occasion a dog had slipped her lead and we were told not to touch the dog as it ran off !!!, the trainer went berserk and started shouting, she once told the group that she lifted a dog up with a short lead and swung the dog around to correct the dogs behavior my mouth was left wide open with shock, I NEVER went back didn't like the way she handled the dogs in the group and my puppy, please don't waste your time with this place, just glad I saved my pup she was shivering and coward towards the trainer as soon as she approached my dog. Not a great place and will never recommend this disaster of a training school. My puppy was very nervous of the training and I could see how she was and couldn't what to get away from the place. Very very EXPENSIVE NEVER AGAIN.

Would highly recommend the dog training…

Would highly recommend the dog training company. Never owning a dog before, I never quite comprehend what a dog entailed let alone a working line dog. At around 6 months it came apparent that exercise and being in a loving family wasn’t enough for her. She was becoming unmanageable. After a-bit of research I came across the dog training company and decided that this training company seemed the right fit, thankfully this decision was correct.

I honestly can say everyone I’ve encountered at the dog training company have been polite and professional. Our training may be over, but I am aware they have 5star boarding facilities. I now have place I feel safe and comfortable leaving her knowing she will be well looked after!

From puppies of around 14 weeks old

From puppies of around 14 weeks old, both our girls went to training with Zach and Shannon at The Dog Training Company.

The focused training was well worth the effort as trying to teach x2 puppies at home was impossible!!! The training techniques given to us as home work were testing, though having followed them the results worked - everyone we encounter comment on how well the dogs are behaved.

We recently put them into home boarding with Shannon for nearly x2 weeks. Usually a family member takes care of them when we are away, however this time it wasn't possible and therefore to Aunty Shannon it was. When we usually collect them on our return from said family member, the girlies have been allowed to run riot and rule the roost, therefore need some quick reminder training: not this time!! They'd had some refresher training and we collected them as the perfect duo - well behaved and under control.

Without any hesitation I would highly recommend the team at The Dog Training Company to help and support with pets of any age. Sticking with the training program will deliver massive results for both your dog and you.

Finally found the perfect trainer for my dog

We cannot recommend The Dog Training Company highly enough. From the very first consultation, the team were professional, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about helping both dogs and owners.

Our dog had some challenging behavioural issues and we’d already tried other trainers with limited success. The difference here was the structured approach and the depth of expertise. Everything was clearly explained, the training was tailored specifically to our dog, and we were given ongoing support and access to online training resources between sessions, which made a huge difference.

The results have been life-changing. Our dog is calmer, more confident, and we finally feel in control and able to enjoy walks and everyday life again. If you’re serious about real, long-term results and not just quick fixes, The Dog Training Company are in a league of their own.

Do your research first

Pricing structure isn't transparent, trainer stated training is bespoke to my dog but the course follows the same structure and rules for every dog.
Use of slip leads and tight muzzles to get dogs to conform, using lead pressure and corrections to achieve fast "results". No treats allowed as this is "bribery" despite my dog being very food motivated.
My dog was shut down and his nervousness and reactivity got worse with the trainer pushing the blame onto me and my family stating we hadn't been following the training closely enough or weren't doing the corrections right or at a high enough intensity.
When asking for a refund of remaining sessions this was made difficult - added an "admin fee" and there are carefully worded terms and conditions "refunds are not available where any failures in training are the fault of the client".
Now opened new services under "Paws & Co group".

Not recommended

I’m so bitterly disappointed in our experience with this company. For clarity. this review relates to the administration/process rather than the actual training as, sadly, we never got that far.
I also agree with other reviews that there is a lack of transparency around the pricing - why not allow customers to know the costs beforehand so they can make an informed decision?
However, the issue I have is that after the initial assessment & receiving the quotes, I was considering booking the Silver training package. I was offered 2 dates for the full booster day for our dog as apparently that’s the first step for the Silver package. My husband & I find it extremely difficult to organise time off together due to our respective shift patterns so I was absolutely delighted that, by chance, one of the dates offered was absolutely perfect & very soon. I confirmed that we could do that date & asked for a link to be sent so that we could pay for the course. An invoice arrived which I paid straight away & then emailed the company for confirmation of the booster day appointment. The next email I received confirmed receipt of my payment but told me that the day I’d booked was no longer available & could I send some more dates. What a way to do business! I had only decided to purchase the course on the basis of the date that they’d offered & I’d confirmed. It could potentially be months before there is another weekday that we can both do. Initially I felt really let down & disappointed but am now feeling it might have been a blessing in disguise if this was the way things were going to go. I have asked for a refund & am now going to do some proper research & find a more reliable company.
It’s a shame as we liked the trainer that we met with & were quite excited about getting started but getting messed about right at the start was a real red flag for me.

We wouldn’t go anywhere else

Cooper always goes here when we are on holiday. Couldn’t ask for better service. This year Zak kept us up to date not only by the daily updates but any concerns he had he would email me. Cooper had a bad paw so we decided to upgrade him to home residential and the love and care he had was amazing. Even going out for walks on his trainers day off. We even got a special post on their social media on our wedding day from Cooper. Thank you Zak and the rest of the dog training company at Leeds. See you in October.

My boy has come out worse from this training…

My boy has come out worse from this training - more reactive and more nervous. There isn't much flexibility in the training they offer, and despite following the training every day, my dog didn't make the progress they expected in the 2 weeks between sessions and we were blamed for it. We had tried to discuss with the trainer the issues that my dog was having between sessions, but was told to just push through.

They claim not to use aversive methods, and yet we watched our dog get strangled until collapsing, and then get pinned down and a muzzle forced on (as a punishment, not due to bite risk). We complained to the company and didn't get a great response - no apology, no accountability, no acknowledgement that any of it happened. That being said, they did refund the last session we didn't go to, and there are a few bits we have taken from the training.

Overall, I'm sure there are some dogs this general style of training might work for (aversive methods aside), but for a nervous/anxious dog, I definitely wouldn't recommend.

We've become more confident dog owners thanks to The Dog Training Company

We found the initial assessment to be hugely beneficial in itself and understood that the trainer needed to gather information about our dog and the issues we were having to then be able to diagnose what was happening and help us move forward. We booked the silver package and although not cheap, we've seen massive improvements in our dog in a short space of time so the investment has been worth every penny. We now feel more confident as dog owners. We love the theory they teach, it makes so much sense to us and in our 1:1's, our trainer has tailored the sessions to what we need as well as taking us through the process they follow. Having treat trained our dog previously, we are so happy to not need treats to get good behaviour from her now and she is a happier/more calm dog because she has clear direction from us and clear boundaries.

Expensive for only 4 1:1 sessions

This company charges £50 for an assessment of your dog prior to any training. Then they offer Bronze, silver gold and platinum each more expensive than the other. You can’t see these packages on their website so not transparent. I took the silver package, £695 this is a lot of money for just 4 1:1 training classes then the rest online. Their training structure is not clear and i wasn’t told it was only 4 1:1 1 hr sessions.

Admin told me training would be 6 months when I enquired, needs to be more transparent They say you can email if you have an issue, that in itself is an issue they don’t reply!

The trainers are knowledgeable, kind and caring but i am not sure the training is tailored to your dog, as one style doesn’t fit all dogs.

Overall I feel it is expensive, for what you actually receive. My dog does now walk loose l ad and doesn’t chase traffic, Prior to attending she was obedient and she had a good relationship with me. If you have the money then great and they are good at helping with dogs that are reactive.

Ask to see their pricing structure in advance of having a £50 assessment…

The £50 'assessment' is really a way of getting you on site to sell in a structured & tiered system of training, which may not work for you and your dog. (it didn't for me)

These are Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum packages with random 'value add' elements such as an online vet service. I suggest you contact them in advance and ask for visibility of the cost and type of training packages they provide, so you can review in advance of spending £50 at the assessment.

There is no flex on these packages whatsoever, (I did reach out for support and was told a firm no).
Therefore the £50 'assessment' isn't really an assessment of your individual dog's requirements as you need to purchase specific packages, details of which are not visible on their website.

The positive, they do seem knowledgeable in this field, so once you've enquired, if the tiering system works for you, it is very possible that they are able to provide a great service.
