Not equipped to lead any conversation, especially with toxic culture that exists from within
I would steer well clear of this organisation.
Out of respect for the broader mission, I suspect many credible and well-meaning people have held back from speaking publicly. However, in my experience, there are serious cultural issues within Black Curriculum that deserve greater scrutiny.
There is no justification for treating staff poorly, particularly those at the beginning of their careers, or for wearing down people who are genuinely committed to the cause. A worthwhile mission should never come at the expense of the people carrying it forward.
From my perspective, the organisation has struggled to retain talent, support and momentum. I believe this has contributed to it remaining far more peripheral and less impactful than many had hoped in the years following Black Lives Matter.
Leadership should reflect on how they manage people and learn to accept criticism without ego.
An organisation with such an important purpose should not feel like a vanity project centred on one individual, but rather a sustainable institution that empowers others and outlives personalities.
For policymakers, partners and prospective supporters considering engagement with this CIC, I would encourage them to speak to former staff and stakeholders and carry out their own due diligence.
The mission matters but there are many other charities and CICs who are doing the work. That is precisely why accountability matters too.
Great resources and easily accessed
Great resources!
Great resources!
My workplace has member in many different regions including the UK and it's so helpful to have resources to share with colleagues
Engaging and Well-Tailored Presentation
The Black Curriculum and our program leader, Christina Peake, did a fantastic job of educating our office on key aspects of Black History in the UK. The presentation was engaging and well-tailored for our office.
Many thanks for this resource.
The Black Curriculum teacher training day
The Black Curriculum did a day of training with our Associate Teachers (trainees), our anti-racism working party (teaching staff) and senior leaders across the Trust.
The training was thought-provoking and informative, giving us opportunities for deep personal and professional reflection, as well as time to discuss how we will put into practice what we committed to in the session.
A very thought-provoking, well-planned and useful training session
Ben from the Black Curriculum provided a very thought-provoking, well-planned and useful training session for our secondary school - it was accessible for everyone and useful for the work ongoing. I would strongly recommend this.
TBC X Merton
We have begun a huge partnership with TBC across Merton which includes the Teacher CPD, Curriculum Consultations and National Ambassador Scheme. We have just finished 7 training sessions across the borough which have been excellent and provided some great steps for our schools to continue to work on their individual curriculums.
We are very much looking forward to receiving the remaining services over the next year but this has been a fantastic experience so far.
Big thanks to Natalie, Melody, Ben, Kwame, Ilhan and the rest of TBC for their help so far.
Decolonisation of the Curriculum
The training covered the less talked about issue of race and how this could be embedded in our curriculum.
Thank you, Black Curriculum
It was a positive experience working with The Black Curriculum. The speaker met us in advance, so we could discuss the content, the College and what was required.
Pre-reading was sent through (a little late because of half term). Ben, the presenter was very helpful and interacted well with College Staff (despite the session being on Teams). Very professional slides.
The session was a little rushed, partly because we had asked for a 2h session, rather than the usual 3h session which is offered. The content was great, but we would have liked longer to discuss some of the points that came up. (We were able to discuss afterwards in subject departments).
Useful post-reading was sent through, along with an invitation to join a free Future Learn course.
Great training
Great training. Really inspiring, engaging and practical. Thanks
Engaging and impactful
Engaging, thought provoking and impactful session. The contributions and resource pack are excellent and the facilitator was knowledgeable and relatable.
Fantastic that so many representatives from Sutton educational establishments were interested in continuing to work towards creating racially just and culturally inclusive learning spaces.
Fantastic training and amazing resources!
We booked a curriculum session for our school and Ilhan was an incredibly personable and informative educator. The topics and information shared were ideal to what we needed as a school to develop our learning and confidence for staff. There were lots of opportunities for discussion and at no point did anyone feel judged if they were unsure on areas or had no experience of this. Great resources shared during and after the session and appropriate amounts of time for all areas covered. I will definitely be recommending the Black Curriculum to other schools in our pyramid and wider.
Thoughtful, thorough presentation.
The Black Curriculum delivered a very well planned presentation on the history of hair discrimination. It was thorough, informed, evidence-based and articulate. I would definitely recommend other schools getting in touch with. They responded to our needs and we really valued their expertise.
The Black Curriculum - Leadership, Learning and Language workshop
The communication from the group was very clear all the way along. The presentation was well designed for the wide group of professionals attending (mixture of special schools with variety of learning needs).
Christina was outstanding; warm, engaging, challenging, empathetic, encouraging, acknowledging of different experiences, well-paced, reflective and overall a very good facilitator.
The course content was relevant and meant that it supported some difficult conversations between all education stakeholders and facilitated different points of view and a space to share and learn.
I would highly recommend working with The Black Curriculum organisation, whatever your starting point.
The Black Curriculum led CPD with our…
The Black Curriculum led CPD with our whole staff on implicit bias, intersectionality and building a racially literate culture. The session, led brilliantly by Kwame, has deepened our understanding, challenged our thinking and stimulated discussion which will positively impact our work in school.
Such an important CPD session for an ITT
It was so useful hearing about why the current curriculum is not representative of the country and why it important to rectify that through independent action - making our lessons more inclusive and tackling these conversations in the early years of education as well as promoting representation
