Tallinn Airport was by far the most disappointing part of our trip
The airport felt surprisingly dirty and poorly maintained, especially considering Estonia’s reputation for organization and quality. The toilets were unacceptable — not just untidy, but genuinely dirty to a level that should not happen in an international airport.
The security experience was even worse. Staff came across as rude, dismissive and unnecessarily condescending. Our bags were opened without any explanation or communication. New, sealed cosmetic products were removed, and when we asked, the response we received — accompanied by a sarcastic remark about explosive screening — felt unprofessional and disrespectful.
Boarding was equally confusing. A staff member announced that families with small children should board first, but when it was our turn (travelling with two children ourselves), she spoke to us briefly in Estonian, apparently under her breath, without making any effort to communicate clearly in English. We genuinely did not understand what we were expected to do.
What was most concerning, however, was the identity check process. During boarding, nobody checked IDs or passports against the tickets. In practice, it felt as if anyone could board under another person’s ticket. Two minors passed through without any verification that we were actually their parents or guardians. ,Τhe process gave an extremely poor impression regarding passenger verification and security.
It is a real shame, because Tallinn itself is a fantastic city — beautiful, welcoming and absolutely worth visiting. Unfortunately, the airport experience did not reflect the quality of the city at all.
