Smoky to the rescue!
After years of playing a well known HR* mouthpiece, I just could not prevent a build up of saliva between the reed and the rollover baffle after a few minutes of playing. None of the usual clearing techniques worked for me - that spitty sound just kept on coming back. So I thought I'd try the Smoky with its step baffle - and what a difference! Same tip opening (7), same reeds (Vandoren ZZ 2.5) and I still get the warm sound I'm used to, without the gurgling. If there is any saliva build up during long passages, the usual clearing techniques work as they should do. There was also another benefit of moving to the Smoky which I was not expecting - the tone profile over the range of the tenor is now much more even. I'm absolutely delighted, and my jazz journey can now continue. A big thank you to Pauline and Maxime for their advice along the way.

This Smoky Smokes
"As with every SYOS mouthpiece in my collection, this Smoky Alto Original is a gem. It is very versatile going from loud and large with a lush sound to soft and sweet with a beautiful sound. The pitch is very accurate and the tone is full throughout. I find it playable for all genres as it is fairly flexible. Go for it, you won't lose."

"I purchased the Smokey Bari Sax mouthpiece for large concert band performances. It is perfect. It gives the Bari a beautiful classical sound that blends well within the ensemble. I highly recommend."
SYOS - Tenor custom
I couldn’t be happier with my experience with SYOS.
What you get with SYOS you can't get with any other brand that I know of -something taylored to yopur needs.
They are friendly people to deal with and make sure you get what you want.
Thanks Kim / SYOS!
"Many thanks to Syos
"Many thanks to Syos who provided this replacement mouthpiece. I purchased a pair of Freaks last November and received a Smoky 7 and Spark 8. I had been hoping to try a Syos mouthpiece for some time, and this provided me a great opportunity to try this range of mouthpieces. Both the Smoky and Spark are great. I found the Smoky more versatile. But it developed a crack in the beak. I asked Syos what could be done, and after some photos, they provided a replacement. Thank you Syos and Kim at Syos."

"I would also like to share my experience with BG DUO Ligature Silver Plated for Tenor Saxophone, received free with my latest purchase Syos. I must say that the experience is very positive, a very effective reed locking system that increases the quality of the final sound. Thanks Syos!"
Great Mouthpieces
I performed a gig last night on my new Syos mouthpiece on my tenor. It sounded beautiful. The range was excellent and tone was even throughout the range of the instrument. I am so into these mouthpieces that I bought one for my alto and bari saxes and my bass clarinet. I love these!

I play several different tenor pieces according to what music and what fits the venue. Syos is the only company that makes that an affordable practice. Syos is one of a kind and more players should try to work with them instead of getting old vintage pieces refaced and hoping it works. Or paying a fortune for a boutique piece that is based on that maker´s interpretation of a vintage piece.
Big impact on my playing
This mouthpiece has made a big impact on the way I play. I’m a professional player, so I have always sought the right equipment. However, I was sceptical about Syos. I took the plunge and found that I could play everything as before but with more freedom. The sax suddenly become easier to play and I could play with more expression.
Thank you.
the sound
The Sound is good.Less force is required. It responds well. I'd be interested to know how one could further optimize it for oneself, requiring even less force, and thus playing very quietly. To what extent the shape of the jaw plays a role in the mouthpiece."
I don't know more the date when i orderd the mouthpiece
It works great
It works great! So much easier than a thumb screw ligature. No difference in tone and the color is cool. Got one for my alto too.
I bought a Spark 5 a year ago and now I go Smoky
I bought a Spark 5 a year ago and have tons of fun playing with it. I was offered an anniversary discount (which was a brilliant marketing move) and bought this Smoky 6 trying to see how big a difference a mouthpiece could make. I must say, the difference is truly remarkable. The Smoky gives a rich, warm tone while still incredibly easy to blow. I think I am still a Spark guy. But every now and then, using the Smoky to play some oldies feel relaxing and at ease.
Easy blowing dark mouthpiece
"I needed a dark mouthpiece that I could control while playing small venues. The Smokey 6 did that for me. I can control the volume as needed. While playing a larger venue I just add a sax microphone. Very satisfied."
They say ligatures don't matter...but they do
An attractive object - I chose white to contrast with a black mouthpiece. My first ring ligature and it's easy to use, of course. But the welcome surprise is that the bass clarinet speaks more freely and easily than it did with a metal/screw mouthpiece. Thank you Syos.
Stops Spark tenor mouthpiece.
Everything Syos has said about this mouthpiece appears to be true. I’ve played it on a few gigs and it is my new go-to. Delivery wasn’t overnight but considering a few days to make and a few days in customs - I had no problems. I got the Spark 8 primarily because I need a lower resistance mouthpiece due to a medical condition. This is powerful and very responsive using a Syos 2.5 reed and it keeps the sound and response in the altissimo. It will be better when I get back to a 3. Softer reeds usually give out up there. For jazz I've never had a sub-tone like this. It's brilliant. Lean into it and the sound gets bright but not too bright. There's a hint of grit in the sound but less than some others, which is perfect. This is a medium chamber and I'm curious how a large chamber would change the sound. The baffle and facing seem perfect. What is the purpose of the horizontal ridges in some of your mouthpieces? I use mostly metals on tenor but I keep a Berg HR around so the form factor on Sparky feels very natural. I give it 2 thumbs up.
