Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 697 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the customer service, finding it unhelpful, difficult to reach a live representative, and often receiving incorrect information. Customers frequently encountered issues with payments, including late fees despite timely payments, problems with automatic payments, and difficulties with processing transactions. They also reported unexpected account closures, credit limit reductions without clear reasons, and high interest rates that made balances difficult to manage. Reviewers also expressed frustration with the staff, describing them as rude, unhelpful, and unable to resolve basic requests. Additionally, some customers were unhappy with unexpected charges, such as fees for paper statements and retroactive interest charges, which led to inflated balances. The payment process itself was often problematic, with difficulties in setting up payments, limited payment options, and issues with transfers.

Unauthorized Charges and 9 Months Without Clear Answers

My primary complaint concerns unauthorized transactions on an account that I did not recognize and was never properly informed about. I first became aware of the issue through an alert from my credit bureau. Prior to that, I had never received a credit card from Synchrony Bank or any account statements itemizing transactions.

When I contacted Synchrony Bank to dispute the charges, I explained that I did not recognize either the bank or the merchant associated with the account. During multiple dispute calls, representatives repeatedly referenced merchants and locations that were completely unfamiliar to me. Eventually, Synchrony sent a statement showing a CARRIED-OVER balance exceeding $7,000.

Adding to my frustration, Synchrony Bank claimed that I had reported the card as lost or stolen through an email notice. This was impossible because I never received the original card and never submitted any lost-or-stolen report. I repeatedly requested that they stop sending these notices. Despite my requests, Synchrony mailed a replacement card to me. I immediately returned it to the sender, clearly indicating that I had neither requested nor wanted the card.

After more than nine months of filing disputes, I requested detailed information about the merchant, especially the contact information and an itemized list of transactions. Most reputable credit card companies provide consumers with sufficient transaction details so they can attempt to resolve issues directly with the merchant when appropriate. However, Synchrony Bank insisted on handling all communications with the merchant themselves and did not provide the transparency I requested.

The lack of documentation, the contradictory information I received, and the prolonged dispute process have left me with serious concerns about how this matter has been handled. As a result, I have lost confidence in Care Credit Synchrony Bank's customer service and dispute resolution process.

I used my card for groceries

I used my card for groceries, paid it off completely when I get my paycheck. They hold the funds for an additional 15 days, even after everything clears on their end. Just because they didn't make the revenue they projected. Canceled my card within a month. Absolutely terrible customer service, and I would not recommend them to anyone.

Don't use this Bank is crooked as hell they do borderline illegal activity. When it comes to their credits had their harbor freight card given a 2k credit limit for 1 month used it once for 56 dollars and payed it of before the billing cycle and was sent a letter saying credit limit dropped to 100 dollars because I got an Amazon car and it was through the same bank amazon started at 1000 then dropped to 500 before I used it for the first time said I have multiple cards was at 500 for almost a year used it and payed off a few times used it for 450 to buy a mini split system first payment came up for 44 dollars I payed 150 dropping balance to 300 and get a letter within a couple days that may limit was dropped to 350 following month payed it to 150 and within a couple days letter it dropped again to 250. Then made a payment dropping it to 50 balance on the 23 of last month my physical bill says it's due the 26 of the month when to pay it off and close the card and balance went from 50 to 102. Hasn't been used so I called and according to thim my last payment was late it came in to the 26 and it's due the 25. Told the my due date was the 26 it's been the 26 for well over a year I have a physical bill that says the 26, and was to no it was changed to the 25 its on auto pay how's it late. They offered to wave the fee this time and balance would be 60 dollars when I said the balance was 50 her response way no it was showing 60, so I said fine i want to pay it and cancel the card. And she just sat on phone for not said anything for a couple minutes and the goes oh did you want me to do something. No stupid why would I expect you to do anything it just your job

Synchrony Bank is a SCAM!

Learned the hard way that Synchrony Bank partnered with Paypal (as Paypal credit) to proliferate fraud and scam. Never again for either one.

They’re are the worst of the worst and scammers.

They’re are the worst of the worst. There was a fraudulent charge on our account. We reached out to them and they said we’re investigated and found that we have to pay for an item that was never delivered to us. We call and they were really rude. I wish someone can close them down.

Beware of deferred interest with auto-pay

If you have your payments on auto-pay and you do deferred interest, be very careful and monitor each statement. I fell for the trap and didn't notice my auto-payments were being lowered over time so I had a balance at the end of the promotional period. Long story short, my balance exploded and ended being more than what I started with because they retroactively charged all the interest and then started adding in interest month by month on top of that. I was thinking the card was almost paid off until I looked at it. I am taking great joy in closing all my Synchrony accounts, especially the one I use almost on a daily basis. My credit score is well in the 800s and the hit from the closed accounts won't affect a thing. I will NEVER use a card or credit that's owned by this company again. It is comforting reading the reviews and see that I'm not the only one that fell for this as I felt so foolish for allowing this to happen. Most definitely a lesson learned.

Would give them zero stars if I could

Would give them zero stars if I could. Every month i have problems with the bill and how payments are applied with promotional balances. What good is a no interest promotion if they re charging you 32% on minor purchases. I complained again this month and got a letter telling me they are applying payments that way because of a federal law. What!! Funny thing is I have a Lowe’s account through them and they apply those payment the way I want automatically when I have a promotion.
Going to close the account, it’s not worth the headaches every month and the horrible customer service.

balance transfer nightmare

I went into a local store where I had received a Synchrony credit card to pay off the card using a balance transfer check from USAA. I just received the bill from Synchrony and USAA. I noticed the transfer never happened. Synchrony had the transaction listed, reversed it back, and then charged me a NSF fee. I called both banks. Synchrony said they couldn't collect the money. USAA said that Synchrony never even sent the check. USAA said my account was fine and up to date and there was no reason that it shouldn't have passed. When I elevated the call to a Synchrony supervisor, she mumbled something about it got stuck in an "ACH clearing house" or something. I asked could the NSF charge be reversed because I have NEVER been late even once and clearly this issue was an internal one....ABSOLUTELY NOT! ...really? I will most definitely get that balance transferred somehow and advise every person I come across that this company charges 34.99% interest and then makes it almost impossible to transfer the balance, and they do not value the customer.

Absolutely useless

Absolutely useless. I waited on hold for an hour after dealing with an AI receptionist, only to have my request for an increase in my loan amount denied. I make enough money in 2 months to pay off the loan, but I need the money now for an emergency project. Even after combining, my income, my partners income, and my tenet's income they still wouldn't increase my credit limit.

My basement gets to go another month being full of shit, because these this bank is USELESS

I don't appreciate them calling me at…

I don't appreciate them calling me at 8:55pm or sending me a message through my Dad's Facebook messenger to try to collect a debt the day after I said don't call me at 9pm. When you harass me with late night phone calls and going through my family to show them my personal issues is way beyond ridiculous! I wonder if an attorney would consider your actions as grounds of a law suit.

Check before applying for a credit…

Check before applying for a credit card. If it is issued by Synchrony Bank don't do it! They are not a reliable bank! They lower available credit and close your accounts without reasonable cause. I have 98% payment history and excellent credit, but just received letters they lowered my credit limit and closed another one! 😡 If I ever used my cards I always paid them in full immediately. So much for being a responsible card holder. You are nothing more than a number to this bank, not a customer. Be aware and stay clear from Synchrony Bank!

Exploading Interest Costs - Stay Away!

I had an interest $10,000 free loan for 12 months from Synchrony Bank I used to buy laminate floors for my office. I made my payments monthly until I had about $3500, left.

I was not notified that the time was coming up on my interest free loan and was hit with over $3,300 in deferred interest charges! I hate myself for not keeping track, but my cost just increased by 30%

These people are robbers.

Horrible company

Horrible company. They closed 1 account with a 15k limit, zero balance and full on time payments for zero reason. They then closed another account with 1k balance and 6k available credit because I had 2 auto pay payments not go through over a 1 year period, mind you I paid immediately both times since it was me forgetting to transfer money to the account payment comes out of. Closing accounts severely affects peoples credit, I get it if payments aren't made and account is always delinquent but that wasn't the case either time. In total they have closed 5 accounts I had with them, all but one had zero balance and was paid in full every month,

Petty Billing Penalties for On-Time Payments

I have had the TJX Rewards Mastercard for a long time and always pay my balance in full. My recent payment was due on a Sunday, so my bank processed it for the first thing Monday morning. Synchrony immediately slapped me with a $27 late fee.

When I called customer service, the agent admitted the mistake and credited the late fee back, but left a $2 charge for "interest" that she claimed she didn't have the authority to remove. Nickel-and-diming a loyal, reliable customer over a $2 interest charge caused by a weekend calendar conflict is petty and terrible business. Wiping out a late fee but keeping the interest generated by that very fee makes no sense. Fix your automated billing system.

The company charges you a $1.99 to have a paper statement. I go online to look at my statement and I cannot get the account number. I chat with them to try and get the account number so I can set up bill pay and they can't give it to me. I called them to get the account number and they can't give it to me they say I have to wait until I received my card. I only use this Bank when I want to get interest-free loans on things I'm buying. And unfortunately they own my Sam's Club mastercard. Wish I did not have to work with them at all.
