Too many covert changes

I was supposed to be buying a house from this company, in Scotland. After bidding in a closed bid system, I was told I had made the highest bid. I was then asked to pay a GBP5000 "reservation fee" which had not been mentioned prior to bidding, and this was before they had provided me with any documentation detailing what I was buying!

I said no, as it was not clear under what circumstances I would be entitled to this fee back.

About 2 weeks later, I finally received the "missives" to discover that there had been some pretty fundamental changes to the plans which meant that neighbouring houses were now being built much closer than had originally been planned. This obviously would have influenced the price I offered.

So, all in all, a lot of wasted time of mine and my solicitor for what was a moving target - and not even overtly so - the changes were only noticed due to having a keen eye.
