Excellent choice of flooring; helpful service

We were looking for wooden flooring while renovating a single room in our flat and noticed the Belsize Park shop - which is tucked away in Steele's Village.

We popped by one weekend to see what they had and discovered a really good selection of quality flooring. The staff (we mainly dealt with Rob) were super friendly and happy to share their knowledge with us. We got several quotes, including one for reclaimed flooring, and spent a week or so deciding what to go with. In the end we went with the cheapest option. Delivery was quick and everything was in order.

We twice had to order additional items which we forgot to place in the original order. Second delivery was flawless but the supplier sent the wrong item for the third order. One quick phone call and the correct item was delivered within 24 hours - so no delays for our builders.

As an aside, there's a really good selection of tiles in the basement - more interesting and nicer than what's on offer at other shops in the Primrose Hill/Hampstead area.

Overall, very happy with the service, products and price.

Hi Gillian,
Thank you for your feedback.

Firstly, we would like to remind you that we have a zero tolerance policy towards verbal abuse of our staff at SQM Flooring. Our staff members reported multiple disappointing incidents where your behaviour was unacceptable toward them. This is not something we allow staff to tolerate while working with customers.

At SQM, we genuinely value every opportunity our clients provide, regardless of project size or budget. We treat all clients with the same level of professionalism and dedication.
We understand you were hoping for a quicker turnaround on your bespoke cupboard estimate. However, we must respectfully clarify the timeline and context of your project:
* Our project manager visited you on the 23rd of April to take measurements and discuss the project scope. He informed you at that time that he would be on holiday starting the next day, which might cause a slight delay in the estimate.
* Despite being on holiday, he responded to your email on the 3rd of May, updating you that the measurements had been sent to the factory and that we were awaiting the pre-fabrication drawing.
* On the 5th of May, still on holiday, he forwarded you the drawing for your review.
* On the 9th of May, you requested the estimate, along with some technical questions. Our office team replied on the same day, informing you that the project manager would return on the 12th of May and that the estimate would be sent promptly after his return.
* The estimate was shared with you on the 14th of May. Unfortunately, it was declined by you.
It's important to note that the standard timeline for bespoke furniture design is typically 2-4 weeks. Despite the project manager's holiday, we managed to deliver within this timeframe, consistently maintaining communication.
We genuinely tried to accommodate your request, including responding during the project manager’s holiday. We also sent a follow-up email apologizing for any inconvenience and offering to expedite any future requirements. Our director personally reached out to discuss this further, but we did not receive a response.
We are disappointed that we couldn’t meet your expectations on this occasion, but we wish you all the best in your search for the perfect solution.

Warm regards,
The SQM Team

Wooden planks

I recently purchased wooden planks and had the pleasure of being assisted by Robert. His exceptional customer service truly stood out. Robert was knowledgeable, patient, and went above and beyond to ensure I found exactly what I needed. He provided valuable advice on the best types of wood for my project and even helped me with the delivery process. His friendly demeanor and professionalism made the entire experience enjoyable. I highly recommend Robert for anyone looking for quality products and outstanding service. Thank you, Robert!

Avoid - experience was error ridden, installation was low quality, complaints process was inadequate and concerns were not dealt with acceptably.

TLDR: experience was error ridden, installation was low quality, company blocks customers from writing google reviews.

Customer ended up with a house full of flooring they didn’t select, complaints process was inadequate and concerns were not dealt with to an acceptable standard. Would avoid.

I rarely write public reviews but unfortunately in this case I felt obliged to. I engaged Square Metre Flooring to install laminate flooring in my house after shopping around a lot, as I was impressed by their professionalism and good reviews(!). Edit: It has since transpired that they block or delete all negative Google reviews.

They were the most expensive quote I received but it felt worth paying more for quality and as they assured me they'd get the job done in the relatively tight timeframe I needed.

I initially selected a flooring, SMF quoted, and I paid a significant chunk upfront. Two weeks later they called saying that my choice was out of stock to come into the showroom to select another. Back in the showroom I landed on the style 'Ile de Re' which was the same price as my original order. I clearly recall selecting this as I had to spell it out to the salesman, and noted there would be no change in overall price.

After that, there was some miscommunication about the start date which got delayed which was a minor inconvenience. The works eventually started while I was away on business. When I returned, they had started laying the floor and I verbally noted to the installers that the colouring was a bit different to what I had expected - but in good faith I thought it must just be due to the natural lighting vs. the shop. However, I then found some of the discarded packaging and noted that the flooring they were installing was not only not the colour I'd selected, but also a cheaper model of the flooring. While SMF insist this was an innocent error made worse by the fact that they forgot to reissue the invoice to me, the sequence of errors that led to this didn’t sit well with me.

As one room of the house was already laid by this point, I asked about my options. Given this was a big job and I was spending five figures on the project - I expected them to be accommodating about what could be done as the error was entirely theirs. I spoke with the owner for several hours and initially he offered me a 3% discount to continue with the installation of the incorrect floor. The other option was for SMF to claim on their insurance to rip out the floor and start again with the correct floor - but I was told there would be no compensation for the delay, and that it would take at least several weeks, which they knew was not an option for me given I was moving away. Interestingly, when they had to order additional flooring for the rest of the house it arrived the next day..

Given option 2 was untenable for me, I felt obliged to go with option 1 . As my partner put it 'if they were installing a new kitchen, they wouldn’t effectively force you to keep a kitchen that you didn’t order'. After several hours of negotiation they agreed to a discount around double what they originally offered, but was still far below what I felt I should receive, as I had to keep a floor that I didn’t want. While the owner was verbally apologetic, I still didn’t feel the response was commensurate with the issue at hand.
To make matters worse, as they were finishing the job, they kept adding additional costs for things that conveniently amounted to roughly the same price as the discount had been offered. This had been for things such as rehanging doors which they had initially said would be included in the original quote, but now were costing four figures for half a day's work. If I didn’t pay this additional amount they were going to leave me with two doors that wouldn’t open or close so I felt I had little choice.

Overall while I felt the tradesmen who did the work were polite and helpful, I wasn’t impressed with the overall service nor particularly with the quality of the flooring they installed. I have had multiple issues since completion (bath dislodged by workmen and water pouring through the ceiling, tiles not properly sealed to the floor) but have decided not to waste my time and money further with SMF and instead get it resolved by a trusted builder.

To summarise, I'd strongly advise taking your money elsewhere.

Thank you for your feedback. We always welcome the opportunity to improve and hold ourselves accountable when mistakes occur. However, we respectfully disagree with several points in your review, as they contain significant inaccuracies.

Firstly, the initial product you selected was out of stock. We offered multiple opportunities to reserve the product, but by the time you confirmed, it was no longer available. As you were out of the country, we agreed, both via email and a follow-up phone call, that you would choose a different product upon your return, and only then would the installation proceed.
To avoid ordering incorrect materials, we held off on items such as plywood until your decision was made. Once you selected an alternative product, it was ordered, and the installation began.
A few days into the installation, our fitters informed us that you mentioned the wrong floor was being fitted. They offered to stop the installation immediately and reported this back to the sales office. However, you instructed them to continue, indicating that you preferred the colour being installed. To clarify the situation, we immediately called you, and during the conversation, you indicated you had selected a different floor than the one delivered. Our salesperson, who had handled your order, disputed this, stating that the product had been ordered based on your instructions. Unfortunately, a change order and updated invoice were not sent, which was our oversight. For this, we accepted full responsibility, regardless of the dispute about the product itself.
At that point, we offered to remove the floor and replace it with the one you desired at no additional cost, However the lead-time was 5-10 working days for delivery from Belgium. The sales person that attended to you said this was the precise reason you opted against the product the first time around as you had a trip booked for Australia.
You declined this offer and instead requested compensation. Initially, we offered £500 as compensation, which you rejected, asking instead for £2,500. We explained that if you preferred compensation, £500 was our maximum offer, and we would otherwise proceed with replacing the floor as it was covered by insurance.

Regrettably, at this stage, our discussions became strained, with you threatening us with "social media obliteration" and bad reviews if your demands were not met. Nonetheless, we offered you three different resolutions and eventually increased our compensation to £1,100, which you accepted. The project was completed on time as promised.
Regarding the door issue, you requested a quote for both materials and labor, which we provided at £650 for two days of labor plus materials for two workers. You accepted this quote, and the work was completed. You were under no obligation to accept this estimate, and we fulfilled the request accordingly.
Furthermore, we encountered delays in receiving payment for our labor, despite multiple emails and reminders. It required a final CCJ warning to settle the outstanding amount. This pattern of behaviour suggests an attempt to leverage compensation rather than addressing genuine concerns.
Lastly, in regard to the alleged leak in your bathroom, we did not carry out any plumbing work nor move the bath. Our work was solely focused on LVT flooring installation over existing tile. We are unaware of any damage caused by our work. We are more than willing to engage an independent third-party evaluator to investigate the issue, and we will abide by their recommendations.
Once again, we appreciate your feedback and remain committed to addressing any legitimate concerns you may have.

Fantastic experience thoroughly recommend

We chose all of our flooring from Square Metre after doing a thorough research prior to starting our home renovation.
The kids'room completed with the v4wood laminate flooring. We looked at many options and so happy we chose that one as not only do we love it but everyone who comes over complements us on it.

In our living area we used the v4 wood tannery brown wood floor and again have had such positive comments about it.

Your customer service was fantastic throughout the process. Always helpful with such timely and efficient responses and good advice when we were unsure, also letting us see small and big samples etc.

Thanks
