Significant quality drop, chronic inventory issues, and no transparency

I’ve been a regular Soylent customer for nearly two years and relied specifically on their Cacao Powder. The earlier version was excellent — rich, creamy, and genuinely enjoyable. The recent tubs I purchased are materially different: noticeably thinner, diluted, and far less flavorful. This change occurred with no notice, no disclosure, and no labeling update, despite continued use of the same version designation.

This isn’t just subjective taste. Numerous other customers have independently reported the same degradation, which strongly suggests a systemic quality issue rather than a one-off batch problem.

What makes this worse is that Soylent has had chronic inventory and communication problems for years. Products regularly disappear without explanation, cacao pouches vanished entirely, and the “back in stock” notification system has never once worked in my experience. Customers are left guessing where and when products might reappear.

I spent weeks communicating with Soylent support, provided photos, lot codes, and detailed comparisons, and was repeatedly told the issue would be escalated and “gotten to the bottom of.” The final response was a $25 goodwill credit — with no acknowledgement of a quality problem, no explanation, and no assurance that anything is being fixed. Given the time, expense, and scope of the issue, that offer was frankly insulting.

This isn’t about a refund. It’s about transparency, accountability, and trust. Soylent appears unwilling to acknowledge quality degradation or communicate honestly with long-term customers. Between inconsistent product quality, unreliable availability, and poor transparency, I’ve lost confidence in the brand.

Don't recommend. Bad experience.

I drank soylent for a month. It was fine. I had it on a subscription so it came again the next month. This time the box it came in was absolutely covered in power. I opened it and power flew everywhere. I contacted support about my exploded bags of soylent and they literally ignored me. I sent pictures, sent many follow ups and the only response I got was "Since we haven't heard back from you yet, I'll go ahead and tentatively mark this ticket as solved." I contacted them again several times after this and they still never responded. Their websites a mess and idk this company just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Don't recommend.

Caution: Soylent Promised a Refund But Never Honored It

Soylent promised a refund via email but never honored it, leaving me with both the unwanted product and the full charge. On June 5, 2025, their customer service team clearly stated in writing that I would receive a refund. They instructed me to return the product, said the order would be canceled, and confirmed I would be refunded once it was returned. I followed their instructions and hand-delivered the unopened box to FedEx the next day, marked “Refused – Return to Sender.”

FedEx did not provide a tracking number because return to sender shipments do not require one. I was told it would be handled internally. Unfortunately, the same package was mistakenly delivered back to my home on June 15, after I had already left the country for international travel. I was not present to address the error, and I planned to return it again upon my return in August.

In the meantime, I contacted Soylent again, explained what happened, and asked them to honor the original refund. They stopped responding completely.

I filed a dispute with my credit card company, Capital One, and submitted Soylent’s own email as proof of their refund agreement. Capital One denied the dispute, claiming that the written agreement counted only as a "conversation" and not as valid proof. This is completely unreasonable. If a customer follows instructions, provides documentation, and is ignored, how else can we protect ourselves?

To make matters worse, when I asked Capital One what is required to qualify for a successful dispute, they refused to tell me. Their representative said they do not disclose dispute standards to customers. This makes it nearly impossible to know how to properly present a claim.

Soylent had multiple opportunities to fix the issue and follow through on their written promise. Instead, they chose to ignore a customer who followed all instructions.

To other customers: Soylent’s products might be fine, but their customer service is unreliable and unaccountable. If anything goes wrong, you may be left without support or resolution.

I recommend saving every email, screenshot, and call log if you choose to order from Soylent. One mistake or gap in their response may cost you both time and money.

No communication, horrible service.

I placed an order and was so excited for my month supply. It’s expensive. A full 7 days later, I still hadn’t received any notification about my order being processed/completed/shipped or anything.

I emailed, with no response. I sat in the help chat for over an hour to finally get some assistance only to find out that because of ONE flavor in my case being expired, they had no estimated time frame on when I would get my order and offered a refund. What kind of company just ignores their own supply chain issues and doesn’t inform the customer about the status of their order? It would’ve been nice to know before I’m waiting over a week to even find out what’s happening with my order. Who knows how long my order would’ve sat in limbo to be fulfilled! Poor communication and created a very very very unhappy customer on the service alone.

Total scam company.

Total scam company.

They have a great product, I've used it since 2016. They got kicked out of Canada because Canada said it wasn't a meal replacement, but they worked with Canada to get back here. Started purchasing it again as soon as they came back.

However, I've noticed that now that the company has been established for a while, scummy business practices have been slowly implemented. For example, if you need help with an order or a subscription, they will wait until after it has been sent so that there is nothing they can do to help you.

More recently, they've been having supply issues. They charged me for more than $300 worth of product when they didn't have stock, which meant they took several months worth of subscription charges from my card without even having the product, then when I emailed about it, they were dismissive, unresponsive and didn't actually read my concerns.

I also noticed that when they restocked, they opened orders to new customers first and then dealt with the subscription customers after. It wasn't until I emailed them to say I would get the product sooner if I made a new order than wait for them to send the $300 worth of stuff I already paid for, that they finally sent it.

After that, they charged me for my next subscription right away even though they messed up the order dates and should have rectified this before sending it. I emailed them about that and they responded after sending it so that no refund could happen. At this point I moved the next delivery date to the summer since I had over $400 of their product sent to me.

Recently, I got an email confirming a new order. I emailed immediately because I did not authorize this. Once again, they did not respond until after it was sent so that they can say it can't be refunded. But this time I am disputing it with my bank. Soylent claimed I did not change the order date, and it's rubbish that they've already been so shady and then their system didn't record my change so I'm getting charged again?

Pure scam.

Do not trust them. I still stand by the product but the people behind it are now just like every other corporation. They don't care about the customers because if they did, I'm someone who has supported them since before they got kicked out of Canada, I still give the product credit, and here they are, screwing me out of more money and giving no customer service to rectify it. Disgusting.

fake giveaway

Genius contest on instagram and Facebook in which they said the correct answer was a prime number, and then they said the correct answer was 120 which is NOT a prime number. They refuse to fix this incorrect challenge and award the right winners or even explain themselves after dozens of emails.

I bought Soylent because years ago I…

I bought Soylent because years ago I remember the ingredients being decent. However, after buying it recently, I realized that this formula is filled with natural and artificial ingredients. I tried to cancel the first order, however, I got no response to that attempt. When I tried to cancel the subscription from my phone, the button to cancel didn't even work! I had to cancel from my PC.
It's really sad what happened to Soylent. I am staying away from Soylent now.

While the food eventually got sent out

While the food eventually got sent out, I contacted this company several times to check the status of my order and inquire about some questions.

After 3 attempts and emailing their customer service email and trying to start a chat with the Soylent team where on the label is says “Talk to us!” - I still haven’t heard back.

Yet after 3 attempts to reach out, they have yet to reply. Doesn’t seem like an approachable company at all, I just wanted some help.

Soylent caused me health issues

Their Soylent drink has caused me moderate health issues.

The maltodextrose in the drink has completely decimated the microbiome of my gut, and this has resulted in effects that I'm still trying to reverse months later.

I asked for a refund on a subscription that I thought I had cancelled, and they refused.

Avoid Soylent.

Terrible customer support

Terrible customer support

I placed an order, and it was delayed. I was leaving the country the next day for 3+ months, so contacted the support to redirect the package back to their warehouse. I got a "reassuring" reply from the "customer support", saying that I should not worry, because my package would be delivered soon.

Good product, but...

I've been drinking Soylent for years. I've always enjoyed it. I think the company name is funny and I genuinely enjoy the taste and convenience of their product.

Unfortunately, I've just gotten to the point where I'm over it. It was probably about 2 years ago when they just suddenly quietly shrunk the bottle size while the price changed the same, as though they expected no one would notice. Shortly after, Soylent was pulled from the shelves of the only store near me where I knew it was sold.

I mostly just order online, but I was always bothered by the fact that there are some flavors that there appears to be simply no way to try without buying an entire case online. Their store locator does not allow you to choose a distance range but shows NO stores "near me" that sell original or Cafe Chai flavors. When asked about it, customer service offered no solutions and kept trying to point me towards the Store Locator I already told them I used, and services like AmazonFresh that aren't available in my area (when they clearly have access to my address to know that they're sending links to services that aren't offered here).

It was over a year ago when I suggested that there be customizable boxes or at least some way to buy individual bottles. I understand that consumer suggestions are not guaranteed to be granted, but I have years of marketing experience and have seen plenty of other companies successfully offer customizable subscriptions. I knew it would be helpful to other customers as well as the company itself. I don't know if anyone who could do anything about it ever actually got wind of my suggestion. At the very least, they could have made sure that all of the flavors they sell were available in a variety pack - even if you have to purchase multiple different variety packs to try them all.

Either way, they added a misleading widget to the "manage subscription" page that makes it look like you can add an individual bottle to your next box. It actually is supposed to add a case of that flavor, but it gave me an error message when I tried to use it. When I emailed customer service about it, they added over $80 worth of product that I did not want to my next order without asking me first. In my conversation with the customer service representative, there were multiple instances of them not reading what I said before replying and thus giving irrelevant or unhelpful responses, or ignoring questions completely. The entire conversation was unhelpful and accomplished nothing.

I really don't have any major anger against Soylent or anything like that, but I just got to the point where all the little disappointments added up and made me decide it wasn't worth it any longer. I like Soylent, but I'm probably going to avoid buying it until I see some evidence that they care about subscribers and making sure that their product is actually available to the people who want to try it.

For now, I'm trying Huel. Ordered my first box and it came 2 days later (faster than Soylent's shipping, lol). Huel's ready-made beverage is actually more expensive, but the bottles are much bigger and the product actually appears to be better for you. Huel doesn't appear to have customizable boxes either, but ALL of their flavors are in their variety box, so they're not making consumers buy an entire case of a specific flavor just to try it. That seems like a no-brainer to me.

Horrible customer service

Product is pretty solid, but the customer service is not great. I live in Hawaii and expect shipping to cost more. The problem is that for a subscription of the powder it went from $15 to $112 and they forgot to inform me of this. The product costs $52, but the shipping is more than 2x and this is kind of a big deal on whether I would continue my subscription. Feel like they really dropped the ball on this one.

Wrong product, no answer

I ordered a case of powder and was charged for it. I asked them to change the shipping address (within the same state, no cost difference), and they did. I received a case of liquid worth only half as much as the powder I ordered. Multiple efforts to contact Soylent got no reply. It was only resolved when the payment processor refunded my money. Never heard from Soylent at all after the address change.

I had been looking forward to making Soylent powder part of my daily routine. After this experience, I've written off Soylent entirely. If they can't ship the right product, and won't communicate about it, why bother?

Now sending almost out of date product

I love the product, been using the drinks since August 2019 - but my last two orders had almost out of date products sent e.g. the order which arrived two days ago 11th March 2020 has bottles with use by dates of 25th March - the same date as the previous order. Since I had 5 bottles left from that order, the new order will pass its "Best Buy" date before I can use them. Never used to be like this, always previously got product with best buy dates a couple of months later. Disappointing change.
