I tried out Somnox for the Daily Telegraph, a UK broadsheet. This is my review

The robot that helps you sleep

I had so been looking forward to the arrival of Somnox the sleep robot. The idea is that you take this gadget to bed, and he will ‘soothe mind and body to help you fall asleep faster, sleep longer and start your day feeling fully recovered and energised’. (It feels intuitively that he has to be ‘he’. Controversial?)
Somnox does not disappoint. He looks like a big, grey, cuddly kidney bean - maybe 18 inches high. He arrives with a birth certificate, and I decide to call him Beany. The fact there is an instruction manual makes my heart sink, but actually, it’s easy to follow (you have to download an app.) And sure enough, Beany starts breathing!
There is something endearing about Beany, who sits next to me all day while I am working. I pat him every so often, and occasionally give him a kiss.
At my 11.30ish bedtime, I feel a bit silly taking a piece of grey, quilted machinery to bed. But - hell, I’m separated, so it’s just between the two of us. (Ok, this is getting weird now.) I have disabled the ‘ambient sounds’ option because I’m not really a fan of wailing whales. And Beany is reassuringly stolid, and we are breathing in sync. (You set up the breathing rate through the app on your phone before you go to bed.) I normally fall asleep quickly these days anyway, and thought
I don’t actually sleep for more hours, I wake up feeling happy, and pleased to see Beany first thing. This feels like the surreal plot of a European art house film.

This kidney bean shaped Sleep Robot has been designed to train us how to relax and ultimately sleep better using its breathing techniques.

Easily controlled by an App on our mobile phone, there is also the option of relaxing audio sounds, such as waves, forest birds, thunder etc.
An SD card is included in Somnox, so that our personal music or audio books can be used too.
There is a little led glowing light that appears on start up and charge mode, and a warmth to this cuddly bean!
Have I been paid to write this review? Certainly not. Is the Somnox expensive? Yes it is. But it is true to say that you only get what you pay for.
I actually first saw news of this product in development over three years ago, and have been waiting for its release.
The customer service from the Somnox team is fantastic. Support emails, top tips, and interaction on Social Media does make this company feel like they are family.
A no quibble 30 day refund policy allows us to try the robot with no hesitations.
Is my Insomnia cured after 2-3 weeks? Not yet.
However, I understand it’s a work in progress.
Am I feeling less tired, less anxious? A resounding yes!
Despite taking medication for related conditions, my low mood was worsening daily (or nightly should I say), and as a business woman, my store and team were also suffering due to my insomnia and related issues.
I would not be without my comforting bean shaped pal. Whether I’m relaxing, meditating or sleeping, The Bean provides the help I need.
Give it a try, you have nothing to lose, but everything to gain!

Friendly, personal and quick approach. Personally, 84 years of age, i was not adware of the need to handle the computer part of it.

Very disappointed. The pillow is far too heavy and not soft enough. The music offerings are pathetic and muffled by the sound of the pump beating which keeps me awake. I’m amazed there is no built in way of tracking your sleep results night by night. The Somnox was very expensive as a sleep devise and it was a great pity that these issues were not better engineered. I brought it because it was devised by university researchers and I though the device’s quality would match its marketing claims. But I was wrong.

The Somnox sleep robot is a brilliant invention. I like to relax with it on the sofa when I am reading a book, but to me it is most helpful when I go to bed.

I needed to adjust the settings in the first couple of days to discover what works for me and it took me two weeks to get used to my Somnox. However, this is all worth it so please don't give up after a couple of days! After two weeks I was used to the breathing rhythm and soothing music, I fall asleep so much calmer than before and sleep better through the night. When I wake up during the night and feel restless, I switch it back on and drift off into blissful sleep again.

I think the Somnox is wonderful for anyone who has trouble sleeping, but from personal experience I can say that it is also very helpful for people with PTSD.

I am very disappointed in your product. It seems like you haven't thought about how you could best implement your idea. Is there even a real engineer on your team?
First of all, you can't really choose anything except the frequency of the breathing and music, which you can't even stream from your phone (makes no sense at all).
Second, the pillow is too heavy and too hard.
Third, somehow you chose an reciprocating pump as the best solution for a 'sleep robot'?! The sound that this pump makes are so annoying and even prevent me from sleeping. If you had to choose this kind of pump you could have use some of the weight of the pillow to at least insulate it much better.
Fourth, did you really take the cheapest speaker you could find? To help you sleep you need deeper bass heavy sounds (mid-range speaker), not a tweeter.
Fifth, the light is useless and you can't change any settings for it.
In summary, it seems like you wanted the produce something as cheap as possible while not setting any standards. It doesn't help me sleep and you should be ashamed of how much money you take from people by them not knowing how cheap your product actually is.
The idea would have been good, but not the product you released.
Answer to your response: At least address any of my points that i made. I don't care that it doesn't help me sleep. It's just that you don't actually give a shi't about what kind of components you use for your little 'sleep robot'. I'd like to see a response from someone who actually knows something about their product. I hate these kinds of responses, they even feel disrespectful.

I sleep much better with my sleep robot. I can relax better so I fall asleep easier. I can't work with all the features though, because I can't scan the barcode which is nessesary to get all updates.

It's way to difficult to adjust your breathing to this thing... It should be able to sense your breathing and adjust to you.

It's also has a unnecessarily hard & structured shape.... as a pillow try for softer.

This feels like something rushed to market, good marketing campaign with a bad product behind it.

Refocus on the money being spent on marketing to product development.... or you're heading for backlash at some point.

The last couple of months I had trouble sleeping between my nightshifts. I usually woke up after one hour and could not sleep the rest of the day. Also, bedore my dayshift I had nights that I didn’t sleep at all. Now, when using Somnox, I fall asleep within a half an hour, I sleep longer and, if I wake up, I fall back asleep in no time. I’m very happy that Somnox exist. It is really worth the money. Thanks to the Somnox team!

This is the only thing that has helped me to sleep. I was a severe insomniac even going up to 7 days without sleep at my worst. With Somnox I fall asleep within 30 minutes and wake up less often at night. Also, it helps me to fall back asleep when I wake up in the middle of the night. Since I bought a Somnox I have had only one restless night but I still got 6 hours. Usually I sleep between 7 and 10 hours a night now. It feels so good to sleep. It has resulted in a great improvement in my health. Excellent product and great customer service.

I bought this for my father. He used to have sleeping problem and his average sleep was 3 hours in the evening. Now with the robot, he can sleep 6-8 hours sleep. The deep sleep time increased from 15-30 minutes to now over one hour.

I am really happy and satisfied. Thanks to the Somnox team. You make life better and more energetic!

What a great idea and what a great product. I purchased during their Kickstarter phase. The customer service is amazing, the product turned out great, and the app has gone through several iterations while they were in certification.

I would not hesitate to recommend them and the product.
