Sidecar Gets 10 Stars From My Family

I’ll be the first to admit, I was completely against switching to Sidecar Health when Sylvania Schools made the change in January 2025. After 20 years with Paramount, I didn’t want to deal with a newer company, especially with my daughter scheduled for a multi-million-dollar open-heart surgery. I was one of the loud voices encouraging my coworkers to vote no on the switch. I truly believed it would be a nightmare.

I could not have been more wrong.

Before our plan even officially began, I was contacted by Debbie, my Sidecar case manager, in November 2024. From day one, she went above and beyond — working directly with me and the hospital where my daughter would be having her surgery. She secured a good faith estimate ahead of time and made sure every single cost was covered. I never had to fight, beg for approvals, or worry about surprise bills. She handled everything.

Our out-of-pocket expenses this year have been significantly lower than what we paid with our old insurance; even with a surgery that lasted 18 hours and was performed at a hospital across the country.

After we came home from California, exhausted but grateful, a beautiful bouquet of flowers arrived from Sidecar Health. I actually cried. It wasn’t just about coverage...it was about care.

So here I am, eating my words proudly: Sidecar Health has exceeded every expectation. They proved me wrong in the best possible way, and I am incredibly thankful for their support during the most difficult time of our lives.

I never thought I’d be writing a glowing review for an insurance company, but they’ve earned it.

Health insurance for any situation

I recently was able to do a virtual visit through my amazon app, get my prescription through amazon delivered next day, all at no cost. The best part is, I was able to do all this before 7am (which matters when you're a stay at home mom with 3 little kids). Sidecar has been great!

I'm not thrilled to make copies of my bill and make xtra trips to the dr's office for that. Then paying a portion of my bill out of pocket as payment plan was already set up for me..what's the point on having insurance?

We’re sorry to hear about your frustration and appreciate you sharing your experience. You should be able to get an invoice directly from your provider either at your visit, through your provider’s online portal, or mailed or emailed to you, so there’s no need to make an extra trip to their office.

We’ve also recently rolled out new options for expense submission to make things easier if getting an invoice is a challenge. You can now submit visit notes (often given at the end of your appointment or available online through your provider’s portal), among other new ways to submit.

With Sidecar Health, there should never be unexpected costs. When you shop for care, you always know upfront what your plan pays and what you’ll owe — or even earn back — before your visit. And while it’s not required, choosing care at or below the Benefit Amount is a great way to make sure you never owe more for care than your deductible. The choice is truly yours.

If you’d like help walking through these steps or using the new submission options, our member support team would be happy to assist. Feel free to message them in the app, or call (877) 653-6440.

Spending less than a traditional carrier

I used to be part of traditional insurance my entire life. Every year that I was recommended to get an ultrasound along with my mammogram, I dreaded the $400+ cost (that was my negotiated rate). Some years I skipped it because I couldn't afford it. When moving to sidecar, I was very curious what my ultrasound was going to cost me. I called the same facility I have been going to and asked what is their cash price and it was $150!!!! I couldn't believe it. The same ultrasound but $350 cheaper. Shame on these big insurances for making care unaffordable. Thank you to Sidecar, for offering a plan that allows me to know the cost and shop around and ultimately save money.

Sidecar was rough in the begining…

Sidecar was rough in the begining because you are literally doing all of the foot work for your health care. Having Sidecar adds steps to the process of getting medical care, BUT you are not limited to get care in just your state. You don't have a network you have to stay in. To me, this is huge. I am from Indiana but moved to Ohio for family. However, I have a rare version of heart failure. The man that saved my life and kept me alive in the ICU for weeks is the only cardiologist I trust. He is Indianapolis and I live in Columbus now. Sidecar covers these visits without issue. Where I go is completely MY CHOICE. With heart failure there are many prescriptions that are very high priced. Sidecar pays them all. I just have to swipe their card and upload a few pictures. The hardest part was learning how to use Sidecar properly. I would choose sidecar over traditional insurance any day. The freedom of choice is worth that to me.

Sorry you had a frustrating experience, especially at the hospital. That’s not the experience we want for our members.

Our model is designed to be better for members — by giving you the freedom to see any licensed provider, visibility into what your plan will pay before you get care, and more control over your healthcare dollars. Importantly, members never have to pay more than their deductible at the ER, no matter the billed charges.

We also want members to know they’re never alone. Our support team is available seven days a week by phone, chat, and in-app messaging, and calls are typically answered in under 10-seconds by real, U.S.-based representatives who are ready to help. In addition, we have a dedicated team standing by to help navigate complex or unexpected care situations, so members get the support they need when it matters most.

We’d welcome the chance to review your experience directly to make sure everything was handled properly. Please contact us at (877) 653-6440 or through the Sidecar Health app so we can assist you.

I'm extremely disappointed with Sidecar. It is more a Side hustle

I'm extremely disappointed with Sidecar. Just as the name is called Sidecar. It is really a Sidecar that should be parked in an old garage. They have unscrupulous practices. They offer coverage for preventative care, but when it comes time to pay, they refuse to cover the full amount. Instead, they offer a preloaded payment card and expect you to choose their doctors and not your current doctor.
Even worse, they instruct members to tell healthcare providers they are paying out-of-pocket, all to avoid the provider billing them at the standard insurance rates. This is incredibly deceptive and puts customers in an awkward and potentially dishonest position.
Preventative care should be fully covered, as promised. Encouraging members to misrepresent their insurance status just to cut costs is not only unethical but could also have legal implications. This behavior erodes trust and defeats the entire purpose of having insurance in the first place.

We’re sorry to hear about your experience and want to clarify how Sidecar Health works.

Preventive care is always covered at 100% up to your Benefit Amount, even before your deductible. The Benefit Amount reflects average cost for any given care in your area. If you choose a provider who charges less, you keep half the savings. If you choose one who charges more, you simply pay the difference.

It is absolutely not our intention for members to misrepresent themselves as uninsured. We instruct members to let providers know they’ll be paying directly at the time of service and that they will need an itemized invoice to submit to their insurance. It’s also a good idea to ask if the provider offers a direct-pay or prompt-pay discount, which many do.

We understand this approach is different from traditional insurance, and we’d like to review your claim to ensure everything was handled correctly. Please contact us at (877) 653-6440 or send us a message through the app so we can help.

My experience with Sidecar has been…

My experience with Sidecar has been great. My ONLY gripe is that some manufacturers’ drug coupons require proof that insurance is covering some part of the meds, and because of how Sidecar works, it looks (on the payment side) like they’re not so it makes some coupons unusable (usually the VERY high-savings coupons - I could save something like $2000 a month on my migraine meds, but I can’t use their coupon because it appears like I am self-pay), and I feel some of their reimbursements are on the low end for my area (though I’m usually within an amount that would be a typical copay). However, I also did NOT have to jump through any hoops for my migraine meds, which are very pricey. The “no prior auth” situation has been amazing for me. Likewise, I have employees who need some EXTREMELY pricey medications, and those meds have been covered without issue, and without cost, to the employees. It’s worth noting, we have a first-dollar coverage plan.

exceptional level of customer service

Using this insurance can be frustrating at times, particularly because many expenses such as surgeries, ER visits, and alternative therapies like TMS aren’t covered unless the deductible is met. That said, the **customer service is outstanding**, and I’ve consistently appreciated the agents’ candor, patience, and helpfulness.

This insurance is especially valuable if you take high-cost medications that are essential for managing chronic health conditions. These medications can be prohibitively expensive without coverage, so having this insurance can make a major difference. It’s also helpful that they offer **flexible financing and payment plans**.

For example, a \$7,000 ER visit was reduced to around \$2,000 with their help. When I asked about using hospital financial assistance (based on income), they supported the idea and confirmed that it would still count toward my deductible.

Another feature I appreciate is the **cash-back benefit** if I pay less than the estimated benefit amount for a medication, I receive the difference as cash back, which I can use toward future copays. That has been a welcome surprise.

I’m especially grateful to **Javier and Rebecca**, who assisted me today. Thank you both for your clarity, kindness, and never being condescending while explaining complex information.

One caution: if you’re seeking mental health care through **Tava Health**, be aware that they may reject your case if it's considered too complex. That experience can be frustrating, so it’s something to keep in mind.

Overall, while the coverage limitations can be challenging, the level of **support and service** from the team truly stands out.

Unfair and inappropriate decline of expense claim reimbursement by Sidecar for Preventive services through one of Sidecar's preferred providers

I have Sidecar Health Employer Insurance Plan and per the policy document, all Preventive services are exempted from the deductible and the entire fee under Preventive services are to be covered by Sidecar if one of their preferred providers are used for the services. I went to Southeast Medical Group (1800 Northside Forsyth Drive, GA 30041) for my annual wellness check on 5/7/2025 which is one of the preferred providers listed on Sidecar website. The doctor's office charged me an initial co-payment of $150 upfront at the time of visit and suggested the outstanding amount will be determined after the service and will be sent as an itemized bill through postal mail to my home address. I received a statement from doctor's office on 5/16 per which had the outstanding amount owed as $427.18. I made 2 different payments to doctor's office of $150 on 5/7/25 and $427.18 on 5/16 and submitted the
itemized bills and receipt of payments on Sidecar website for reimbursement. Sidecar is now denying the reimbursement claim of $150 with the explanation that they only reimburse one claim per visit. This is clearly a fraud because both the expenses submitted are for a single visit for which doctor's office generated 2 separate bills. The total amount of the service as it shows on the itemized bill received on 5/16 is $577.18 which was split between $150 at the time of visit (5/7) and remaining $427.18 (5/16). Sidecar Customer care agent declined to offer any help in resolving the issue here and I am being asked to pay the outstanding $150 to Sidecar.

Very user friendly. Creates consumer awareness that has not existed in the healthcare industry to-date. It’s easy to find care at or below the set benefit amounts and there is a chance to pocket real dollars by simply using your healthcare.

Fairly new idea in insurance

Depending on your doctor you will love or hate this insurance. I’ll let you in on our experience with it. My doctor is great and they give me the paper work I need to submit to sidecar.

With my spouse it’s a different story and while he works a full time job with long hours (me as well) we’d have to spend what little spare time we did have submitting to the insurance. Sometimes (in his case) the doctor didn’t give him everything needed.

I held off on mammograms and a needed cancer screening (since my sister was diagnosed with cancer I needed this) because trying to get an appointment and shopping for a testing site and prices based on what side car would cover was like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I’d need to pay 3k out of pocket for the cancer screening alone.

This was via my husband’s work and it felt like we were employees of sidecar too and not in a good way.

One of the reasons my husband left his company was due to pay, but the other big issue was this insurance. So if you’re interviewing for a job and you find out this is the insurance they offer run.

It was such a pain in the neck to make sure everything was submitted. Crazy when I’m deathly sick the last thing I want to think about is taking a picture of my receipt for my prescription to submit to insurance.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We’re sorry it was frustrating. Sidecar Health is a new model, and after years with legacy insurance, it can take some time to adjust.

That’s why our Member Care team is always here to help — including finding any care a member needs at or below the amount Sidecar Health pays. In fact, when members find care under that amount, we share half the savings with them. Over 90% of our claims result in members either earning money back or paying an amount similar to a copay on a legacy plan.

Our model puts members in the driver’s seat — without the burdensome restrictions of legacy insurance like prior authorizations, referrals, or limited networks. Members can see any doctor they choose, and care decisions stay where they belong: between the patient and their doctor, not the insurance company. And while members are in control, we’re always by their side to support them.

I’ve had pretty good experience so far

I’ve had pretty good experience so far. The only thing that annoyed me is I am on MAT to stay off drugs, they needed a note from my doctor stating the plan since the type of medication and apparently they need it every 90 days I think. If I am continuing with this medication that should tell I am continuing the program I am on. I’ve never had this happen before.

My 21-year-old daughter had an unexpected emergency eye surgery due to an accident. She handled all of the payments and bill submissions herself, and I couldn’t be more pleased with how everything was handled.

Once we met our deductible, Sidecar Health covered the rest. This insurance saved us thousands compared to what it would have cost under our previous plan. It’s truly amazing how much you can save when you tell a provider you’re paying cash.

We’re very thankful for the coverage and flexibility Sidecar Health provided during a stressful time. Highly recommend!

This is terrible insurance

This is terrible insurance. You have to constantly go back and forth gathering billing lists with codes to submit. Most of the time they say ypu have have the wrong paperwork and you have to constantly go back and forth. I would much rather pay 10 times as much fkr good traditiinal insurance. As muxh leg work as ypu end up doing they should be giving you a paycheck. I really cant believe my employer, which is in the healthcare industry, would provide this garbage to its employees
