Don’t leave the store without checking the goods

We purchased our Coffee table from Shack Store Alexandria Sydney on the 29th October 2025. We kept in storage until we moved into our home. It was our first purchase for our new home, and we were so excited to say the least to display our new Beautiful Item. Our home was not ready to move in until 27th November 2025. The First item we unwrapped was our coffee table. As we retrieved it from the packaging we noticed on top was damaged! Then unbeknownst the whole bottom was smashed into the coffee table. I have photos to prove. We immediately called the store and they asked us if we have the receipt and we said we do and proved it by photograph of the receipt. We also proved all the photographs of the damaged item. On these photos we have dates and times of opening the box.
They said they will not honor the purchase because it was 1 month since we purchased the coffee table. We felt they were portraying us as Liars. They made us feel as we damaged the coffee table and that we wanted a free coffee table. I carefully picked up the purchase in my vehicle ! And transported it myself so I knew it would not get damaged. It was NOT Transported by a removalist company.

This is our first and last purchase from Shack. No professionalism whatsoever. We have made it very public on other platforms

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. We are genuinely sorry that you were disappointed by the outcome, however we must clarify the facts of this situation.

The coffee table was purchased on 29 October 2025 and collected in good order. It was then stored for several weeks, transported during a house move, and handled by a third-party removalist before being unpacked on 27 November 2025 — almost one month later.

Once an item has left our store and has been:

• stored outside our control
• transported by a third party
• unpacked weeks after collection,

we cannot reasonably accept responsibility for damage discovered at that point. This is standard practice across furniture retail and logistics and is clearly outlined in our terms and conditions.

The damage shown in the photographs — including extensive structural breakage to the underside — is not consistent with factory, warehouse, or in-store handling, and is indicative of impact damage that most commonly occurs during third-party transport or storage.

At no point did our team accuse you of dishonesty. However, we are also required to protect our business and staff from claims where the item has been out of our care for an extended period. We explained our position calmly and correctly, and provided guidance to contact NSW Fair Trading, offering to cooperate fully with any mediation process — which is the appropriate and professional course of action in such circumstances.

We take responsibility immediately and without hesitation when damage occurs while goods are in our care. Our hundreds of five-star reviews reflect this, as well as our long-standing commitment to quality control and customer service.

Unfortunately, we cannot accept liability for damage that occurs after collection, storage, and third-party handling weeks later. In these situations, the appropriate avenue is to pursue the removalist or party responsible for transport.

We stand by our team and our decision in this matter.

Thank you for updating your review. However, our position remains unchanged and we must again clarify the facts.

Regardless of how the item was moved, it remains undisputed that it was collected from our store, stored for approximately one month, and transported to a new home before being unpacked.

Once an item has left our care and has been stored and handled outside our control for an extended period, Shack cannot reasonably be held responsible for damage discovered weeks later. This position is consistent with consumer law and standard retail practice.

Shack has been operating since 1993 and has served well over one million customers. Our reputation for quality control and customer care is reflected in the very high volume of long-standing five-star reviews. When damage occurs while goods are in our care, we take responsibility promptly and fairly. However, we cannot accept liability for damage that occurs after collection, storage, and handling beyond our control.

We respectfully ask that responsibility also be acknowledged for the period during which the item was not in Shack’s possession.

For this reason, and due to the manner in which the issue was raised in-store, we advised that the appropriate next step would be to proceed through NSW Fair Trading, where an impartial mediator can review the facts. We have confirmed our willingness to participate fully in that process.

We ask that our business and staff are not misrepresented.

We will continue to respond factually and transparently to ensure the situation is accurately reflected.

Can't wait to see what they find next

One of the most interesting models for a furniture and accessory business in Australia. Every piece has been very well considered, researched and prepared to give a huge variety of options, each with a unique beauty and history. The best thing about Shack though, is the staff. The owners have a great passion for the business, they are very hands-on and are very keen to look after people, with no hard-sell. They have a genuine desire for their customers to end up with something special that works for them. This is our favourite decor shop and we often drop in just to look at what they have found lately.

Visited Shack after being recommended…

Visited Shack after being recommended by another store at the Supa Centre Moore Park, and the experience there was excellent. The customer service at Shack Moore Park was impeccable – the team was helpful, attentive, and the chairs we reviewed easily made our top five shortlist. Once we decided on the chairs, we went to Shack Artarmon, but the experience was very different. While we were comparing four different chairs in the showroom, the sales rep did not come over to check on us or offer assistance, which was disappointing, and it has put us off returning to the Artarmon store.
We ended up ordering the chairs online while in the Artarmon store and chose click & collect, and the online purchasing process was actually smoother and more positive than the in‑store interaction. Collection from the Shack warehouse at Rydalmere was great – the pickup process was smooth, and the two staff members were very helpful, guiding and assisting with loading the chairs into the car. Thank you to the Shack teams at Moore Park and Rydalmere for the great service. Also worth noting there is a Shack outlet with more items than we saw in the Moore Park and Rydalmere stores, with additional discounted pieces available, which is useful if you are hunting for a bargain or clearance stock.

The staff were extremely helpful and…

The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. The range of furniture was perfect for what I was looking for. The furniture was delivered the next week and the delivery staff were friendly and helpful in placing the furniture in my apartment. I will certainly visit Shack again.

Disappointed

I loved the exterior of the Brittany drawers but unfortunately all of the inside seems unfinished and like they didn't bother sanding it as it's extremely rough and multiple splinters. Very annoying because while I can line the base of each draw the sides are still rough and it pulls on all the clothes. The delivery guys were amazing though. Shame the product wasn't.

Fantastic service

Fantastic service. I ordered online and although they were relocating their warehouse and was told there maybe a delay I received my order within a week. Very happy with my purchase. Their marble items are of great quality and price. Will order from Shack again.
