SDCCU Acts in Bad Faith — Hiding Behind Incompetent Counsel

San Diego County Credit Union has demonstrated repeated bad faith in their handling of my account. They misclassified my checking account as a credit account and even applied rolling delinquencies after closure, which is legally impossible.

To “justify” this, they produced documents about debit card authorizations and fee schedules, claiming these prove a credit account — documents that do not support their reporting and are misleading.

Even more concerning, they hired outside counsel to defend their actions, yet that attorney is relying on facts that don’t exist in the same universe. Instead of correcting errors, SDCCU hides behind their lawyer, acting as if they are above the law. They even previously agreed to a pay-for-delete arrangement, then later pretended it never existed.

This is a clear example of a financial institution misleading customers and regulators while attempting to evade accountability. If you value truthful reporting and ethical treatment, avoid SDCCU at all costs.

Don't waste your time!

Don't waste your time with this place! I am sorry I applied for an account as I just received a rejection letter. I didn't know SDCCU had such high standards of who could have an account. I make a good income, lived in SD for a decade, etc. and got rejected! SDCCU thinks it's a country club or something. So many bad reviews for this credit union so it must have terrible management. I've banked at a corporate bank for 15 years with no issues but SDCCU is nearby. I guess SDCCU doesn't think someone may want a mortgage or other products from them at some point Apparently I'm just not good enough. Sad someone who has a lot of positives can't get a measly checking account. VERY JUDGMENTAL place. How does this place even stay in business???

Strange and annoying practices

I moved out of town and called to get a new debit card when mine expired and I hadn’t received one. They refused to send me one for another two weeks because I had just changed my address online a week or two ago. When I asked to close the account, they were willing to immediately send me all the money in my account via cashier’s check but refused to close the account for another two weeks because of the online address change. In what world does that make any kind of sense??

SDCCU Accepted My Pay-for-Delete, Took My Money, Then Denied Me a Checking Account — and Reddit Silenced My Story

I want to share my experience with San Diego County Credit Union (SDCCU) in the hopes of helping others avoid what happened to me.

In July 2025, I went in person to a local SDCCU branch and submitted a pay-for-delete agreement to settle an old charged-off account. The agreement was acknowledged, stamped, and accepted. I paid the full amount via money order, and I was told that after five business days, I could return to open a checking account.

When I returned in August, I was denied a checking account, even though the agreement had been fulfilled. I was only allowed to open a savings account — and to make it worse, they ran a credit inquiry without telling me. The reason for the denial? The same negative account they agreed to delete was still showing on my credit report.

Even after multiple attempts to follow up, SDCCU has failed to honor the agreement. My credit continues to be affected, and no formal explanation has been provided.

I originally shared this story on Reddit, hoping to warn others. It was respectful, detailed, and honest — and it was removed without warning or explanation. I can’t help but wonder if institutions like SDCCU have the power to suppress criticism on platforms where people go to speak the truth.

There is no transparency, no accountability, and no justice here — just silence.

This is not just about money — it’s about trust, dignity, and fair treatment. If you’re considering banking with SDCCU, please think twice.

We have banked with them for years and now we came to Europe and they cannot help at all with anything they are horrible we cannot make a transfer or anything. We specifically asked them before we left if we could do everything online and they told us yes you can. Now that we are here they will not let us transfer unless you go in the bank. HORRIBLE

These people are complete idiots

These people are complete idiots! I sent them a legal court document to change my name, and I was told it was being mailed back to me. After a few weeks, I called because I had not received it, and I was told that they destroyed my legal court document. To top it off, the guy on the phone was incredibly rude, and acted like I was an idiot - because of course they destroy court documents. Goodbye to these people!

Worst bank I’ve ever had

Worst bank I’ve ever had, at 48 years old. SDCCU is awash in horrible policies that make banking difficult and stressful. It is obvious that the customer does not mater at all here, and I would avoid SDCCU at all costs.

There are much better options

There are much better options. I used to love this bank I've used them 13 years. but sadly they are now antiquated as far as service. I've been waiting over 2 weeks to be mailed a new ATM card and I live in the same city as this bank. They say they have mobile deposit but that is just false .. please read the terrible reviews for their banking app that doesn't actually work. Zero after hours service no temporary block feature or temporary online shopping feature. The ATM machines and web services go down too many instances.. typically over a weekend. You may live near a branch but seriously drive a little further for a bank that can take care of your modern needs and that also won't make a hard hit to your credit to join.

Horrible customer service

Horrible customer service. The agent argued with me about a policy that is not stated on my monthly Visa statement. When challenged, there was silence. As the customer, it is not my problem that SDCCU takes 5-7 days to process an ACH payment. Their services are archaic and their customer service reps need to be trained better.

Negative Experiences with Mortgage

I had a mortgage with this company but got out of it as quickly as possible because of how difficult they were. Initially, during my real estate purchase which included a 1031 exchange, they upped the interest rate on me mid-escrow. They totally had me over the barrel as I couldn’t risk losing my 1031 exchange mid-escrow. Also, they would not allow paying extra principal payments online. I had to walk in my extra principal payments each month to the branch. The last straw was when they added $1100+ to the balance of my loan without informing me. When I brought it to their attention and asked why, I was told they did an audit and found that some of my extra principal payments were not figured right and they needed to add the interest back (without informing me). Their explanation made no sense as they supposedly thought just three out of dozens of extra principal payments (which were all paid the same) were in need of refiguring. All of these are shady practices and may even be illegal. I had a lot going on in my life at that time so didn’t have the energy to fight with them on these practices. I will never apply for a mortgage with SDCCU again!

They make it hard to make a payment - perhaps so they can charge late fees

At first, it was easy to set up and make automated payments through my bank, then suddenly, SDCCU couldn't find the account. Only because I made a payment ahead and watch my accounts closely did I catch it. Since then, I had to call in payments. I tried to mail them, but SDCCU lost the mail (US mail is NOT that bad, or just lose them to ONE location). I am in the process of refinancing the loan to get rid of this company - even if it means paying a higher APR. NOT WORTH doing business with them.

This could be a great bank

This could be a great bank, but they fail on so many issues. Their hours are ridiculous and they have NO after hours support. Some of the tellers are great, but they have a lot of turnover - so if you are working with one of their many trainees, you're in for trouble.
