Does Romiley Dental Practice Meet NHS Standards of Consent, Governance and Patient Care?”attended Romiley Dental Practice for…
I attended Romiley Dental Practice for a lower left molar extraction in November 2025 and unfortunately experienced permanent nerve changes afterwards. The extraction itself was complicated, involving a fractured tooth removed in two pieces and a pause in the procedure to obtain additional instruments. The numbness never resolved and has affected my speech, eating, confidence, and daily life.
Over the following months, my treatment was paused pending “indemnity instruction”, but I wasn’t given any explanation or update. A routine recall was later issued even though treatment was paused, my nerve symptoms were ongoing, and NHS referral concerns remained unresolved.
A Subject Access Request confirmed there was no written or signed consent form and no documented explanation of nerve injury risk. I raised this through the NHS complaints procedure, but the Practice’s response did not address the specific points I raised. Their conclusion that the extraction was “clinically necessary” and performed “to an appropriate standard” was not supported by any documented clinical rationale, risk assessment, or consent review.
The Practice also stated they could no longer provide NHS care because only one dentist offers NHS adult treatment and I had requested a different clinician following the adverse outcome. I have asked Greater Manchester ICB to clarify whether this basis for removal from NHS care is consistent with NHS contractual obligations.
My intention in posting this review is simply to share my personal experience and to highlight the questions I have asked the ICB to review regarding consent, record keeping, referral handling, paused treatment, and complaint responses.
