Unauthorized charges and terrible support – Avoid!

Total lack of integrity. After downloading the app, I never signed up for a pilot or trial, yet Rise processed an unauthorized USD payment on my credit card. I have screenshots proving this yet they charged me anyway.
While they eventually reversed the main charge, they are refusing to cover the international transaction fees caused by their error. To make matters worse, they won't explain how this happened, share how I can make a complaint and have now completely ghosted my emails. I suspect they refuse to admit the error because it proves their internal processes and security are not solid. Scams and silence—stay away.

Hi Dee —
We’re very sorry for the frustration. We’ve been in touch with you directly and have refunded the subscription charge.
The trial converted to a paid subscription before it was cancelled. The additional fee you’re seeing is an international transaction fee applied by your bank, not by RISE, so it isn’t something we’re able to refund on our end.
We appreciate the opportunity to resolve this.

Used current sleep time, no real insights

My problem is not getting enough sleep and having issues getting to sleep. The app just used my current bedtime and told me to sleep longer.

Not sure how to stay asleep. Not sure how to fall asleep faster. The app did not help with any of this. It suggested some night time relaxation techniques that I have already tried and didn't work for me. Didn't ask if I already knew any of them.

Suggested the best time to take Melatonin was either when I was going to sleep or afterwards (?). Many experts in sleep hygiene recommend not using Melatonin as your body will not learn to sleep naturally without it.

Not sure what they think this really offers people. I went the sleep at my normal time and woke up earlier than I should have. Like I always do. Also, the recommended wake time is almost noon. Not sure how to swing that and actually would rather be able to get to sleep a bit earlier, so I get more sleep without waking up as late. No suggestions for how to do that.

The information in the site can be obtained by reading articles online. And I get more accurate suggestions from the articles. Why would I pay for that?

Hi TinaT —

We're sorry RISE didn't deliver the experience you were looking for, and we appreciate you taking the time to share this.

Falling asleep faster and staying asleep through the night is exactly what RISE is designed to help with.

The most effective guidance for your situation is the Melatonin Window. That's not a recommendation to take melatonin supplements, but rather it's a prediction of when your natural rate of melatonin production is at its highest based on your recent sleep patterns. Aligning your bedtime with that window gives you the best chance of falling asleep and staying asleep across the night.

We hear you on the relaxation techniques not feeling personalized enough, and that's important feedback we'll share with the team.

If you haven't tried it, we'd recommend the "Get back to sleep" or "Sleep Reset" feature on the Tools tab. It's a core technique from CBT-I, the gold standard in insomnia treatment. Use it when you can't fall back asleep within 20–30 minutes, and give it several nights to see if it helps.

RISE also provides timing recommendations throughout your day — not just in the hours before bed — geared toward helping you fall and stay asleep. These include:

- When to get and avoid light
- When to have your last meal
- When to stop caffeine

These are familiar concepts on their own, but where RISE helps is timing them to your unique circadian rhythm and recent sleep-wake patterns.

On the recommended wake time showing close to noon — that could be a bug (if much later than you typically wake up) or it might be based on your recent sleep history.

You can set a preferred wake-up time in the app: Profile icon (top right) → Wake time goal → adjust Latest awake on weekdays to when you need to be up.

Your suggested bedtime, wind-down time, and melatonin window will all shift accordingly.

It's also possible your sleep need estimate is running high — you can adjust that too (Profile → My Sleep Need → Adjust).

Please email support@risescience.com with the subject line 'Trustpilot: TinaT' — our team can review your specific sleep data, investigate why the recommendations seem off, and help get them calibrated to your schedule and goals.

Working with RISE has been very helpful

I love this app and the services connected to it. I didn't know that I could successfully address what I thought of as a sleep disorder. I started to use Rise last year. It takes time but there are so many things that I learned to do differently. I used to be a night owl, often unable to sleep until 2 and 3 am. I could never plan things for the morning because I couldn't rely on being able to function early in the morning or to get enough sleep the previous night. Even if I was in bed and thought I was asleep for 8 or 9 hours, I woke up very tired. It affected my mood, energy levels and memory function. I gradually learned from RISE how to use my body's natural melatonin, awareness of sleepiness, light and darkness to develop habits that set the stage for a good night's sleep. I now fall asleep easily and wake up quite naturally early in the morning and am alert and awake. I didn't strive for that, RISE tells you that if you start to do the right things, your own natural rhythm will emerge. They provide access to sessions with sleep experts who do really know a lot as well as the resources on the app. And believe it or not, the AI coaching was also really helpful.
(I also notice that most of the 1 star reviews are not about the program, but about issues with getting refunds--usually because we can sign up for things so many ways (Apple, Facebook, the app itself, etc. This is an issue with every app and then it is sometimes hard to remember or find out which place to contact to get a refund. I have had this happen with other apps and have learned to make notes on my phone when I sign up or buy anything.)

No refunds

My 10 year old daughter ("accidentally") subscribed to this $120 app without permission. But there is no workable mechanism to request a refund or dispute it. So annoying how these tech companies fail to provide any customer service. I suppose that's the point.

Hello Amelia,

We're genuinely sorry that you had this frustrating experience and for the difficulty you faced in requesting a refund.

To get your refund resolved quickly, the steps depend on where the subscription was originally started:

1. If the subscription was created via the App Store (Apple/Google): These are billed and managed by Apple or Google. You must contact them directly to request a refund. You can request a refund following the steps each company outlines here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/118223 and https://support.google.com/googleplay/workflow/9813244?hl=en

2. If the subscription was created directly via RISE (on the web): If RISE doesn't appear under your Apple/Google device subscriptions, we manage the billing. You can submit a refund request directly through our app.

To see the full step-by-step process for all refund types, please visit our help article: https://help.risescience.com/hc/en-us/articles/16941117327511-How-to-request-a-refund

If you are unsure of which platform was used, or if you need any help at all navigating this process, please email us directly at support@risescience.com. We are always available to help and will guide you to a resolution!

Horrible app, scammers!!

Horrible app. You download for free app through Apple subscriptions but then they charge you for an entire year a week later. There’s nothing saying that you can’t stop the subscription from the App Store, I deleted the app, and it was not listed as a “subscription” in App Store, but then got hit with almost a $70 charge. Scammers!!!!! I requested a refund through their website and no response. Attempting to dispute the charge with my bank

Hi Linds — We're really sorry to hear about this experience. Please email support@risescience.com with the subject line “Trustpilot: Linds” and we’ll make sure you’re fully refunded right away.

It sounds like there may be a few different things going on here:
1. Your free trial may have rolled into a paid plan before it was canceled.
2. Unfortunately, deleting the app doesn’t automatically stop billing, since subscriptions are managed separately by Apple, Google, or our website.
3. If the charge doesn’t appear under your Apple subscriptions, it likely means the plan was started on our website — or, in some cases, that two separate trials were started by accident (one through the App Store and one on the web).

We completely understand how confusing and frustrating this can be, and we’re continually working to make the process clearer and more seamless. Once you reach out, our team will locate your account, confirm where the subscription originated, and ensure any unwanted charges are promptly refunded.

Thank you for flagging this — and again, we’re so sorry for the hassle.

Hi Muireann — we’re so sorry for the frustration. Please email support@risescience.com with the subject line “Trustpilot: Muireann Egan,” and we’ll make sure you’re fully refunded right away.

When you don’t see RISE in your App Store subscriptions, it's because your trial was likely started on our website. In those cases, the plan is managed directly in the RISE app, and the receipt is emailed (though it may have landed in spam).

We know this is confusing and are working to make it clearer going forward. Thanks for giving us the chance to sort this out.

Be Wary of Double Subscriptions

They loop you into a “free” trial on both their app and phone subscriptions. So if you only remember to cancel one, a month later you get charged $60+ for the subscription. I also just don’t think the app works. It never has my wake or “energy drop” times accurate. I’d take a nap at noon. But it’d tell me I should have an energy spike at noon.

Hi Polly,

Thank you for sharing your experience. We're truly sorry for the frustration this has caused.

Regarding the unexpected charge: we want to make sure you receive a full refund. To process this quickly, please reach out to our support team at support@risescience.com with the subject line "Trustpilot: Polly Review" so they can prioritize your case and get your refund sorted right away.

About the two trials: This happens when someone starts a trial on our website, and then when they later open the app, the sign-in step gets missed. The App Store can then create a second account instead of linking to the original one—resulting in two trials running accidentally. We know this needs to be clearer, and we're working to improve it.

Regarding the app accuracy: our support team can also look into the data inaccuracy issues you mentioned when they're helping with your refund. We'd love the chance to make this right and ensure the app works as it should for you.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this feedback. It genuinely helps us improve. Please don't hesitate to reach out, and we'll do everything we can to resolve this quickly.

This is probably the #1 reason I still have a phone. Social media, meh, I don't need to know more about Trump. I do however need better sleep while I watch the world burn.

Humor aside- the scientific framework for thinking about concepts like sleep debt, how sleep works, and how to optimize for better sleep has been life-changing.

Who would have thought serious self-improvement could involve turning off all the media and burying yourself in a warm pile of blankets. Epic. Thanks Rise.

Simple, effective way to improve your sleep

The app's focus on sleep debt and energy has been great for me. It removes all the other metrics from other apps and simplifies it down to only the things that really matter. Getting notifications throughout the day is a helpful way for me to stick to good sleep habits. Recommended!

Rise has changed the sleep game

I am so glad I found this app. It's hard to believe an app can have a big impact on sleep, but after using it, I am already wayyy more productive and find myself more focused in my day-to-day.

Sleep debt is a concept that is quite new to me, and after calculating my sleep debt score with Rise, I am committed to paying it all off haha.

User experience 10/10, highly recommended!

I’m outraged to realised that I have been charged after £103 signing up two months ago. I was supposed to be paying £10 a month. £32 was charged on first month. Then I cancelled and I have been charged three more times to a total of about £75!! I don’t even have access to my account any more to check what is going on. This should not be happening.

Not helpful if you have a set schedule

This app isn't helpful if you (1) already have a consistent bedtime and wake time and (2) have a job that forces you to work outside of your circadian rhythm "ideal" sleep/wake schedule. It's great that my schedule should be midnight to 8:30am, but my job, partner, and life require me to be awake by 7 and at work by 8:30.

Also, my energy levels are fully opposite of the prediction - high when the app says they are low and low when the app says they are high. And I have no way to adjust them.

It probably works if you don't already have a set schedule and can sleep whenever you want, but I'm mad I paid them money to be told to go to bed and wake up at the time I already was.

Hi Sari, we’re really sorry to hear this has been your experience and appreciate you sharing it. If you’re open to it, please reach out to us at support@risescience.com with “Trustpilot” in the subject line. We’d like to take a closer look and help correct the energy predictions, which should absolutely reflect your real patterns.

Having a consistent sleep schedule is one of the best things you can do for your sleep and energy, and since you’ve already got that down, you’re right that you don’t need RISE for that part. But even when your schedule is out of your control, RISE can still be a powerful tool. You can track your sleep debt, use personalized wind-down reminders, get light and caffeine timing tips, and access tools like breathing exercises and soothing sleep sounds to help you make the most of the sleep you do get — even if energy predictions aren’t lining up just yet.

We’d love the chance to turn this experience around and help RISE work better for you. 💜

Great app, been a game changer for my sleep!

The app is great! Nice and clean UI/UX. I like how it shows sleep debt and tells me when my optimal energy levels are. I never realized how much my energy levels fluctuated day to day until I started tracking my sleep debt. The app makes it so easy to understand when I’ll be at my best and helps me stay consistent with my routines. It’s become a daily habit and I genuinely feel better and more productive because of it.
