Play The Rig is a music installation for children and families that combines percussion, upcycling, creativity and adventure. We visit family days, events and festivals around the UK as well as working closely with SEND outreach to ensure we are accessible to everyone. This handmade “musical playground” is built from up-cycled objects (vintage to present day) turned into instruments and sound experiments, where families can get creative with music, whilst learning about upcycling and reuse of everyday objects. Created in 2013, Play The Rig was developed to be a visually beautiful, musical structure that showed what could be created from re-using and upcycling whilst producing interesting sounds to be explored by curious minds. 11 years on, we are proud to have 9 main structures we call ‘Rigs’ as well as smaller “bits and bobs” which include a Victorian bath and vintage suitcase bass drums. We also run an Arts and Crafts zone where you can make an instrument out of recycling – tin can drums and plastic bottle shakers - thus maintaining our ethos of sustainability and ‘try at home’ possibility. Tens of thousands of children and their families have accessed the installation during this time.

The team at Play the Rig are fantastic

The team at Play the Rig are fantastic. They are super slick and efficient and children always have a great time. We love being able to give our audience the opportunity to experiment with the rig before our BBC Philharmonic concerts.

The Rig experience is fun, friendly and wholesome

Working for The Rig over the past 6 years, I've experienced great joy in connecting to others through music as well as challenged myself and grown as a person and educator. I happily recall the countless festivals, community days and SEND schools, and travelled the length and breadth of the UK. The attention to detail for the client experience that Amy and Jess show through their work ethic and application is top class. They also make the working experience for us freelance musicians very enjoyable, not only seeing other music and being flexible but also just daily acts of kindness that make it seem less like 'work' and more like sharing energy with a great group of new friends!

Always a hit with the kids

I have booked The Rig many times for events and it is always hugely successful with the kids and their parents. The team are very friendly, always smiling and very professional. I also like that it's simple, accessible to all and gives a second life to item that often get discarded. It's a great example of the power of creativity for the younger generations.

As a freelance artist and rigger, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with The Rig on several projects, and I can’t express enough how impressed I am with the professionalism and creativity of the team, especially Jess and Amy, who work tirelessly behind the scenes. Their dedication to making every event a success is evident in how seamlessly everything runs.

The Rig's commitment to expanding their online presence is just one of the many ways they continually strive to improve and connect with the community. Working with them feels less like a job and more like joining a family of like-minded creatives. The atmosphere is always inspiring, and the support from the staff makes it easy to bring our artistic visions to life.

If you’re looking for a dynamic and collaborative environment, I highly recommend getting involved with The Rig. Whether you’re an artist, rigger, or just someone who loves innovative events, this is the place to be!

Thank you, Jess and Amy, for all that you do! I'm excited to see where The Rig goes next!
