I purchased a very expensive Thunderbolt docking system (MiniStack STX) 3 years ago and it blew out last week. Luckily my enclosed hard drives were still working after removing them. The company would not repair my unit even out of warranty and would rather that I dispose of it in the garbage. I even tried to get them to sell me the board so I could replace it myself and they refused. If they won't stand behind their product, I will no longer support such a company. They obviously manufacture JUNK!!!!

AVOID AVOID AVOID

I purchased an OWC Thunderbay 8 which required the use of their "Free" SoftRAID software since it did not allow the use of APPLE's RAID. I set it up easily when I started using this backup solution. Now after updating my OS, SoftRAID is broken and they want $150 just to use it one time, and then $80/year afterwards. They say there is a free solution but do not provide any support or download links to find it or use it.

It is a GIANT POKE IN THE EYE. I will never purchase another OWC product, and I have filed a Better Business Bureau Complaint. If not satisified, I will take further action.

SoftRAID hidden costs

I have an OWC ThunderBay 4 - Thunderbolt 3 for my Mac, and each time I update my Mac (most recently Sequoia) to the latest software, the SoftRAID becomes obsolete and I need to pay extra just keep using it. If I don't do it, basically, the expensive RAID system becomes useless. Recently, they even switch to a subscription type of product, 150usd first year and 80usd the following years. So, if you wanna use their super expensive product, you need to account for running hidden costs, just to make the most of their product. It works well, but it's an unethical policy and they should let the buyers know that upfront. Today, I would definitely choose a different product. Since I have it, I've already updated SoftRAID 2 times, and each time, I have to pay extra. Not recommended.

Charged twice. Refunded late. Short-changed. Issued a licence I didn’t want. This was not the MacDrive of dreams.

I was actually bigging these guys up a few weeks ago. I said MacDrive was one of those rare stress-saving tools that makes you want to shake a developer’s hand and buy them a pint. Then I tried to buy it. Big mistake.

Their checkout failed. Repeatedly.
"Google reCAPTCHA verification failed, please try again later."
Mate, I never even saw a CAPTCHA. Not a traffic light, not a bike, not a single blurry zebra crossing. Just error messages and despair.

After multiple failed attempts, I gave up. Thought, “Well, it didn’t go through. Oh well.”
Fast-forward a few weeks — I check my bank. Not only did it go through… it went through twice.
That’s right. Double-charged for a product I never got. Not a receipt. Not a licence. Not even a confirmation email.

So I contacted support. Calmly. Politely. With every intention of sorting it out like civilised adults.
Their response? A licence key and a vague “we refunded one.” No explanation. No apology. No confirmation of when or how. And guess what? Both charges were eventually refunded — but £1.86 short.
Apparently, I’m now subsidising their broken captcha server.

For the record, I had already told them I no longer needed the product. I’d found another solution by then. But they still issued me a key I didn’t want, and acted like we were square.

We’re not.

I didn’t just lose £1.86. I lost faith in a company I genuinely liked.
And trust me, that’s worse than losing a Jaffa Cake to a playground bully in the ‘90s — because at least that thief looked you in the eye.

OWC, you had one job.
Make the sale work. Don’t break it, charge me twice, ghost me, refund me late, and short-change me on the way out.

Would I recommend MacDrive?
The software, maybe. The experience?
Only if you enjoy being emotionally catfished by your own optimism.

Low quality service and product

An OWC product failed after just 13 months—making it the second OWC device to break (2 out of 2 that I own).

I reached out to the Service Center. The initial response was quick, requesting a support file, which I promptly provided. After that, silence for a week. Then, a second representative asked for the invoice and support file again, assuring me that a technician would take a look. Shortly after, a third person emailed—once more requesting the invoice.

Bottom line: My experience with both A) the product and B) the customer service has been entirely negative.

Faulty product and terrible Customer Service.

Faulty product and terrible CS. Purchased dual 20TB MiniStack drives which worked great, however at 3 months in they both beep repeatedly, erratically, and conveniently after the return policy expired. CS tells me this is normal - except it isn't. Multiple email exchanges including from their 'Sr. Biz Director' all with no result. Interestingly too, I can't login to their site to leave a review (suspect they block all unhappy buyers to fluff their reviews) so - here it is. I purchased alternate Glyph drives, tried and true. Strongly suggest buying elsewhere.
