Great night out for any size/type of group!
Amazing place - great night out for small or large groups, family or friends, with a selection of games that's wide enough to keep everyone happy.
The staff are lovely - we were served by Adam, who was great at making us comfortable. A couple of us were a bit nervous, but he answered all our questions in detail and in a really reassuring way, which made us feel really supported. He also really commits to their travel angle - the venue is themed as an airport from the future - which makes the whole experience more fun and immersive.
Before you go into the experience, you're given a demo on how to use the headsets and controllers, and what to do when you arrive in their VR foyer area. Adam's explanation was really clear and detailed, and at the end of our demo he reiterated everything in a more concise and easy-to-remember way, which I really appreciated.
After your demo you're taken downstairs to the VR area. A wheelchair lift is available for those who need it. Every party member is split into a separate pod, which is a closed, padded cylinder with maybe an 8ft diameter? You fit your own headset, but can ask for help from the staff doing this. The pods are fitted with a rumbling floor and directional wind that correspond to the games you play, so it's a totally immersive 4D experience. It's a bit jarring at first, but you you get used to it very quickly.
There's room to naturally move around/crouch/walk a little bit inside the pod, but you navigate the VR world mostly using the controllers rather than walking around. This means you're able to do the experience seated, which is great for wheelchair users or those who find standing for long periods difficult.
Their selection of games is very varied - they have high-octane experiences like their shooters and horror games, but also more relaxed ones like their kayaking and Google Earth experiences. You can move between their games as much as you want within your time slot, so you're never tied down. You can also choose to split from your group to join a different game, so there never needs to be a situation where anyone gets bored. Some games have a maximum amount of players - Arizona Sunshine had a limit of 4 players for example - so keep this in mind when planning your visit.
No matter where you are in the Metaverse though, you can always hear and speak to the rest of your party. There's also no proximity chat option, so you can't see or speak to anyone outside your party, which is good for safeguarding when bringing younger guests.
We didn't use the self-serve bar, but the drinks menu seemed varied enough for a good night out. They have soft drinks available as well as alcoholic options. You can even get discounts on your drinks based on the points you collect in the Metaverse, which get stored on your Otherworld app account in case you'd like to use them later.
All in all, it's a really unique and wonderful night out in Birmingham. Well worth a visit!
