I didn’t initially understand what a novated lease (NL) was or how it worked, and I wasn’t convinced it would be beneficial for me. After making an online enquiry, I received a call from NL to go through some initial screening questions to determine my eligibility.
Once I passed the screening, a representative, Marianne T, contacted me and gave me a quick overview of how NL works and its potential benefits. I was still cautious and unsure at that stage. However, I already knew which car I wanted, so I told her I would be negotiating with several dealerships and brokers, as NL generally only offers vehicles under the luxury car tax threshold (around $91,387).
In simple terms, a novated lease is paid through your employer using pre-tax salary, which reduces your taxable income.
I appreciated that Marianne followed up a week later without any pressure to proceed or switch to another vehicle. During our second call, I explained I was still waiting on a dealership. The next day, Marianne contacted me again and managed to secure the exact car I wanted—bringing the price down from above the luxury tax threshold to below it.
At that point, I was impressed but still not entirely clear on how NL worked. Marianne was extremely knowledgeable and patiently answered all my questions, no matter how basic. She explained that NL involves arranging finance through a lender, where interest rates may be slightly higher, but the overall savings can offset this.
Key benefits included no stamp duty (for eligible vehicles), no GST on the purchase price, and salary-sacrificed repayments. When factoring in savings from stamp duty, GST, and FBT, I am still ahead overall, even with higher finance repayments over five years. Marianne walked me through the calculations, which helped me understand the financial outcome despite some remaining gaps in my knowledge.
Now, as a proud owner of my new car (MG CYBERSTER AWD), everything is in place. There were several challenges during the process, particularly with the vehicle purchase, but Marianne took ownership and resolved them efficiently. She was thorough throughout the application, and I truly appreciate her support.
There are many novated lease providers in the market, but in my experience, NL stands out as a leader. Perhaps I’m slightly biased now, but they made what seemed like an impossible situation possible.
