The internet is a stressful place

The internet is a stressful place for consumers. There seems to be no end to the ways unscrupulous perpetrators devise to run scams on the average shopper. As a result, shoppers must take every precaution to protect themselves.

I recently purchased a 5 PC lifetime key for Office 2021 Professional Plus from Mkskeys.com. The price, $39.98, seemed comparatively low compared to the several hundred dollars other sellers were charging. There are other sellers charging even less—some as low as $3.00! $3 is so low, it almost has to be a scam of some kind.

Mkskeys is based in Great Britain, so international commerce increased my concern and distrust.

There appeared to be an overwhelming number of good (4 or 5-star) reviews. Of course, there is no way to determine if they are legitimate. The bad reviews (1 to 3 stars) are mostly aimed at download issues and not scams, phishing attempts, or trojan horse viruses. To Mkskeys credit, they did respond to complaints in an attempt to remedy the issues raised by purchasers.

Still, I was very apprehensive. My first line of defense was to use PayPal, hoping that they would offer some protection if the seller was not legitimate. A second line is that the account was tied to a credit card that offers strong customer support and protections.

When I attempted to check out with my purchase, the site would not accept PayPal. Another red flag for nervous shoppers! As it turns out, I had to sign into my PayPal account before I navigated to the check-out page. This caused me some trepidation, but I persisted.

Within an hour, I received an email with the 25-digit key, a link to Microsoft to download Office, and instructions to follow. Unfortunately, Google placed a large red background warning at the top of their email, telling me that the email looks dangerous. That was a real confidence deflator!

The Office download link in the Mkskeys email was not active. This was one of the issues raised in the 3-star-or-less reviews. I sent them an email about it but received no response for several hours. I am now worried that I have been screwed out of $39.98, but worse, I am wondering if my PayPal account is being used to buy large-screen British TVs and Jaguar convertibles.

Eventually, they sent another email with an active link. But that did not relieve my stress. A scan of the link using Windows Defender was some help, so I clicked on the link and downloaded the files, which I also scanned.

I saved all my important files to an external hard drive and a thumb drive and proceeded with the installation. It worked perfectly, and the Office suite is working as it should. But now I am worried that there may be something buried in the files, such as a key logger that is being used to steal my passwords, bank accounts, etc., so I scanned the expanded Microsoft Office programs, which showed no threats.

I am using Word and Excel daily, and feel pretty good about the whole transaction. There is some concern that in 30 days I’ll get a message that my free trial period of Office 2021 will expire unless I pay more money. I won’t know this for at least a month.

What should you do if you want to buy from Mkskeys.com? My process seemed to work well, and I would have no complaints and give them 5 stars if their first email link was valid. You could scan the files with a stronger program than Windows Defender for more peace of mind. You should avoid using a debit card entirely, and make sure your credit card company will support you if there are any problems. Mkskeys seems willing to provide good customer support, but it may take them a while to respond to emails. My anxiety greatly reduced any patience I might have.

Mkskeys needs to be more professional by making sure their emails contain active links to valid sites and responding in less than an hour to any complaints or customer issues

Not happy because I got the mesaage…

Not happy because I got the mesaage when activating it that the code had been activated (maximum activations reached).

Update: After reading this review (not the email I sent via contact form), support staff reached out to me and sent me a guide to do phone activation, which worked. Would have appreciated an immediate post-sale email with such guide and download link for the software (and maybe prompt response to my contact form email) instead of going through the trouble of writting this review to get your attention. Can only leave a 4-star review at best.
