Treating My Lifelong Bird Phobia at Kindt
I'm a 21-year-old American student who came to Amsterdam on exchange in January 2026 with a lifelong, debilitating fear of birds — primarily pigeons. Back home, I could manage by avoiding areas, but Amsterdam made that impossible. My fear began seriously affecting my mental health and daily life: I stopped wanting to go outside, felt in constant danger while cycling, and was frequently on the edge of anxiety attacks.
After looking into various treatments, I found Kindt Clinics just two miles from where I lived. The concept seemed almost too good to be true — one treatment and one test, compared to the months-long programs most other options required. I connected with Vivian from the London Clinic the same day and had a treatment scheduled within a week. My family and I were skeptical, but I trusted my gut.
The treatment itself was incredibly difficult. The following day, during the test, I noticed real changes — I was even able to touch a pigeon held by their handler. However, within a week, I felt my fear beginning to resurface, which was deeply disappointing. I reached out to Vivian, and after an additional practice session, Kindt determined I needed a second round of treatment in a more uncontrolled environment. That second treatment was even harder.
I won't say my fear is completely gone — my avoidance habits are still something I'm working through — but the debilitating anxiety I used to carry in my body is largely no longer there. I recently visited Paris with my family and was able to stay somewhat calm around flocks of pigeons. I still don't enjoy birds approaching me, but my fear no longer controls my life, and for that I am genuinely grateful to Vivian, Hanna, and the entire Kindt team.
The reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5 comes down to logistics. I required two full treatments plus an additional practice session, which was time-consuming and inconvenient — and would have been significantly more difficult for anyone not living locally in the Netherlands. Additionally, since Vivian splits her time between the London and Amsterdam clinics, scheduling was sometimes challenging, and all charges came in British pounds rather than euros, making the cost higher than expected. That said, Vivian and Hanna from the London clinic were extremely responsive and helpful throughout the entire process, which made navigating these hurdles much easier. I was fortunate to have insurance, though the reimbursement process has been an ongoing challenge.
Overall, I would recommend Kindt to anyone struggling with a phobia — just go in with realistic expectations and some patience for the process.
