Sneaky tactics by JD to making cancellation impossible

The gym membership and overall experience is fine, UNTIL you want to cancel!!

I’ve held a membership for the last 6 years, and it’s generally been fine and decent value. You have the odd issue with equipment not being maintained and the sauna regularly out of order but there’s enough equipment to get a decent session even with stuff out of order.

My review and comments revolve around the cancellation experience. My daughter took out a membership and soon after needed to cancel. We thought it would be easy, after all JD Gyms run a digital platform and taking a new membership out generates an almost immediate membership. We had no reason to believe cancelling would be any different.

The app doesn’t provide a cancellation option, instead it takes you to a web form which then sends a manual request for a human to process, with a timeline of up to 10 days! This is 2026, not 2006.

We duly filled out the form providing all the requested information (again this shouldn’t be needed as we came through the app). Nearly 10 days later we get an email telling us they can’t find the membership asking for the same details again.

It’s totally ridiculous, I can’t provide different details to what I’ve already provided. This is clearly a tactic by JD Gyms to making cancellation as difficult as possible.

As it stands, the membership has not been cancelled and over a week since the original request have elapsed.

For awareness, members can also cancel their Direct Debit at any time directly with their bank, allowing up to 10 working days for the bank to action this depending on your provider. If you have submitted a request online, it will be with the relevant team for review, and they will respond directly once they have located and verified the membership. Joined the gym over a week ago.

Joined the gym over a week ago.. most of my time in the gym is spent on rowing section…
Every occasion I start my exercise and have a 5 second break mid way the display goes off and all the data is lost.. so annoying.
Poorly maintained machines…thinking of leaving and going to everlast in Halifax.

When jd gyms ask about your experience after they cancel your membership for no reason

I set it up you signed me out then cancelled my membership when I asked for a transfer so no not a good word to say and I’ll be putting it all on social media so annoyed

Phones in the gym

I've been a member from the start and I am generally satisfied. I go 6am so miss the crowds. One beef i have is people sitting on the machines on there phone. Its generally the younger members and I've done a full back and bicep workout in the time they do 3 sets. They do a set then look at the phones for 10 minutes before continuing. I trained this morning and noticed at least 5 people sat on machines on there phones and nearly got wiped out on the stairs by someone looking at the phone As the amount of members far outweigh the number of machines. I used to manage and was a pt at a gym in Bradford for 10 years and wouldn't let phones in the gym unless doing cardio. They had to put them in a locker or sit in the reception area

JD Gyms review

I highly recommend this gym to any beginner or someone in search of something new but with out the sense of feeling out of place.

The staff are super helpful and are always available in ours to assist you. Very clean, cool aesthetic, vibrant, excellent music choice if your headphones die haha.

The machines and weights are well maintained too. Very pleased.

Awful gym

Awful gym, advertises the sauna a lot but then it cant barley fit 5 people. Machines are out of order. Cancelling Membership requires you to talk to customer support 30 DAYS before it ends. Don't recommend this place at all. If 0 stars was an option i would honestly give it that.

Absolute dreadful customer service

Absolute dreadful customer service, I terminated my contract by cancelling the dd, which it states in the contract you can do!! Only to be inundated with calls and txt messages stating I am in arrears and owe extra charges! When I rung the gym a rather cocky young lady advised you cannot end it by stopping the dd you must fill out a form giving 30 days notice when I pointed out their own t&c's say you can she wanted to know which t&c's!!! Your own staff don't know the t&c's of the gym at which they work?so obviously they are misadvising people and getting them to pay an additional month when there is no need to do so. I then messaged jd Halifax with a copy of their own t&c's and yes I am correct! And to just ignore these demands for payments!!

Maintenance and basic facilites inhumane

I joined about a month ago. The women's toilets - the hand-drier doesn't work, disabled toilet broken, the toilet seat hanging off another toilet. Furthermore, i consistently see the sanitary-waste boxes in the toilet cubicles overflowing.
Basic humane requirement to have hygienic facilities which do not further disable people. Management need to get this right...immediately!

Poor shower facilities

JD gyms Halifax really need to get there act together. Cos why are we paying £25 a month or more. But when it comes to showers that half of them are closed off each night when the gym still busy and clearly needs to be left open. Cos many of us don’t fancy standing around in the queue for the shower all sweaty from the sauna or gym sessions. When it can easily be avoided by having all the facilities open as intended. And either extra cleaning staff or pay them to work extra hour. Debating to go back to everlast as they have more than a brain cell to leaving the cleaning of the showers right at the end when changing rooms are closed.

Our gyms have barriers at the entrance which you can open using our contactless entry app. If you are unable to gain entry for whatever reason, there is a green button near the gates. Press that and it alerts a member of staff to your presence. Someone will come over to help.

Manager gives out suspensions willy nilly good gym terrible Manager
Edit ; I'd only been at the gym 2 week and this was the first time I'd left a few plates by accident. So as a punishment I can only use during manned hours. But I'm still expected to pay full membership 🤣 na don't think so. Managers on a straight power trip an no one there likes him.

barred me for not using gloves when on…

barred me for not using gloves when on similar day another lad was doing the same thing very rude and aggressive management people smoking weed outside the main door and walking in stinking of cannabis this is acceptable how ever punching the boxing bag is a valid reason to ban someone no written notice given or anything went to gym one day to see they had revoked my membership nice gym shame about the manager with a beard 🧔‍♂️ no morals!!!

Good gym in a good location.

Was a member when they first opened but the lack of pool (knew it wasn’t getting one when I signed up but it was only a fiver so thought why not), but have now made it my permanent gym.

First impressions are great. Upstairs are the warm up machines and some great leg day machines along with a decent area with mats and some weights. Not ventured down stairs yet but likely to soon.

Sauna isn’t for me but it’s small so can imagine once there are few in there it would be very “cosy”.

The showers are good. Water pressure could be better but it’s not bad. The actual cubicles are a good size though. Plenty of room.

Only complaint are the changing rooms. Far too small. Get 8/9 lads all trying to change at the same time and it’s crowded. I could see this being a reason some will leave when you compare the room to PureGym.

The JD gym in Halifax doesn’t open its…

The JD gym in Halifax doesn’t open its changing rooms till 6am when the one in Huddersfield opens its changing room at 5am. It might not sound to bad until you realise everyone is just leaving there gym bags everywhere! Causing tripping hazards and would be a nightmare in an evacuation! So please can we have the changing rooms opened at 5am to stop potential harm to others.
