“I Expected Another Technical Tutorial — It Turned Out to Be an Ace of a Course in Computational Thinking”
I recently completed Grasshopper Pro by Thomas Jeremy Tait and found it to be one of the most well-structured courses on parametric design that I’ve come across.
What makes the course unique is the Design → Logic → Grasshopper framework that Thomas teaches. Instead of treating Grasshopper as a collection of components, the course helps you understand the underlying logic of parametric design and how ideas can scale—from small architectural details to larger spatial and urban systems.
What really sets the course apart is how systematic and clear the teaching is. Each lesson follows a step-by-step, process-driven approach centered on design thinking, which is a refreshing contrast to the confusing sprawl of disconnected tutorials on YouTube.
Thomas is not only a very accomplished designer but also a patient and thoughtful teacher. One thing that stayed with me is how much emphasis he places on clarity of thinking before touching the software. That mindset alone has already changed the way I approach computational design.
In a world full of software tutorials, this course teaches something far more valuable: how to think like a computational designer. Thank you, Thomas, for building a course that treats Grasshopper not just as a tool, but as a way of thinking for designers who want to think algorithmically.
Practical Grasshopper workflows, clearly explained and well structured
The course significantly enhanced my understanding of parametric design using Grasshopper. I particularly appreciated the practical workflows that aren’t typically accessible through tutorials or online resources. It helped me approach design and geometry with a more focused perspective. The explanations are exceptionally clear, and the videos are meticulously sequenced.
I'd recommended it for anyone who wants a structured, workflow-oriented path into Grasshopper.
I’ll admit that I was skeptical
I’ll admit that I was skeptical: “How can I, as a structural engineer, learn something from an architect?” Thomas proved me wrong. The most helpful thing about Grasshopper Pro is the unusually clear, logical build‑up of the approach.
Thomas teaches Grasshopper like classical ballet: strict basics, clear rules, and discipline that unlock total freedom. Fantastic course!
I learned how to make my own scripts (when YouTube couldn’t)
In a nutshell, the course gave me a complete understanding of how Grasshopper works as a tool. Halfway through, I was already using it professionally, building my own simple scripts. It simplified a daunting learning process in a way YouTube tutorials couldn’t, at least not in such a clear, organised path. Highly recommended.
Your course helped me slow down
Your course helped me slow down, to design the logic by sketching it first, before connecting wires and endlessly searching for components. Thanks to that, I don’t find a huge Grasshopper canvas overwhelming anymore. The course was really great at teaching that, the pace was unique.
A Valuable Cost Effective Answer
I found the Hopific Grasshopper Courses to be well constructed, thought provoking, challenging - but not simple either! The accompanying explanations have the native 'McNeel feel' and are complementary in terms of their Rhino/Grasshopper integration. Each stage follows a logical pattern, with effective assignments. These courses will be of great benefit to all who desire the parametric approach and more in the many disciplines seeking CAD solutions.
ideal for Rhino user and interested learning parametric design
Ideal for Rhino users who are new to programming and want to learn parametric design
As a Rhino user I came in with zero coding experience so my priority was that the course must also be for beginners. Grasshopper Pro nails this: it shows how—and why—the logic of building geometry in Grasshopper differs from manual modelling in Rhino, so the “parametric mindset” finally clicked.
Another good thing is the duration of each lesson. The lessons were short enough to fit perfectly into my morning routine before office/studio work and kept me motivated.
Highly recommended for busy architects and designers who already know Rhino but want a beginner-friendly path into Grasshopper.
Structured, conceptual, and practical – an essential Grasshopper foundation
This course finally helped me grasp Grasshopper’s data structures, curves, and surfaces through a clear and structured conceptual framework. Compared to scattered tutorials I’ve tried before, this one connects the dots systematically, making it easy to understand the underlying logic and practical applications of algorithms.
I highly recommend it to architects, designers, or anyone seeking an end-to-end understanding of how to deploy Grasshopper effectively within their design workflow.
Clear, practical, and thoughtfully designed for architects new to Grasshopper
As an architect, I found Hopific’s course by Thomas to be a great introduction to Grasshopper. The concepts are clearly structured, and I could start applying what I learned to real design tasks quite naturally.
The course focuses not just on scripts, but on helping you understand the thinking behind them. I also appreciated the quick and helpful feedback whenever I had questions.
I’d definitely recommend it to those looking to build a strong foundation in Grasshopper.
Thanks again to Thomas for creating such a well-crafted course!
I recommend this course to anyone…
I recommend this course to anyone seeking a structured path to learning grasshopper. It offers both flexibility and depth so that you can learn at your own pace.
thank you Hopific
I have worked with Hopific from its early days and have found it extremely useful as a reference to fall back on especially when I have not used certain components for a while.
the clarity of explanations and examples provide a perfect launchpad for experimentation and have led to many useful templates and user objects being created....thanks Thomas for a great resource.
After over a decade of failed attempts...
After over a decade of failed attempts, this is the first course that finally made Grasshopper click. Not that other tutorials are bad, but none can compare to the structured approach, interface of the website, credibility of the author and focus on architectural design. Every few video tutorials you will be challenged with a design assignments to reaffirm what you have been taught during the lesson, you'll have to build a script. It is really fun to see how you can create a "mile long dirty script" that works and later download script from Thomas (provided after assignment) and see how it is really supposed to be solved - short and crisp, it will humble you immediately but you will have enough confidence to continue independently with further online help. I would recommend this course to any architecture related specialist, but mainly architectural design related specialists. I have a daughter of almost 2 y/o who is very demanding and there's not much time left for anything but I told myself - this time, no excuses - so few evenings every week I try to allocate ~1h and sometimes during lunch at work or in the quiet times in between projects, its not easy, you still need to work, but break through is slowly coming. I'm really pushing myself to learn this skill which will pay off - I'm sure of it. Thomas also keeps improving this course and there is an abundance of free tutorials in the same website. Everything in one place is exactly what I needed. Well worth the money, considering how much effort has been put in creating this platform,- well done Thomas, and a big thank you! I only wish this type of learning platform was available when I was younger lol :)
An Excellent Pathway to Breakthrough in Grasshopper and Parametric Design
I'm a building physics engineer who was looking to better understand parametric design and grasshopper to deal with more complex projects at work. This course was opened pathways for me that I never would have known.
I was completely amazed at the realization of how joining all these small and sometimes simple grasshopper components can produce such beautiful structures and patterns, opening up to new and interesting possibilities.
In the end it really helped me leap forward in my capabilities at work as I often deal with simplifying complex structures for simulations. I would highly recommend this for engineers, architects or anyone looking to break through in their grasshopper and computational design skills.
Smooth pathway to learning Grasshopper
This Grasshopper course has helped me understand how to design parametrically in a much more open way than I am used to in SolidWorks. Unlike other courses that require online calls, have complicated sign-up processes, and follow a strict schedule, this Grasshopper course is easy to start and allows me to learn at my own pace. Thomas, the course creator, is an excellent teacher with a well-structured approach, and he is highly responsive to questions and feedback.
Excellent Introduction to Grasshopper Capabilities
As a retired aerospace engineer who has become very active in the maker community (woodworking, metal fab, 3D printing, and laser cutting), CAD is an essential tool for the creation of designs that can be fabricated both with hand tools and with tools such as lasers, 3D printers, and CNC machines. I see parametric design as a highly useful tool for robust and versatile design work allowing one to implement a design idea at a variety of scales and for multiple applications without having to start from scratch for each implementation.
I started using Grasshopper with Rhino3D but found (or worse, couldn't find) needed features and ran into issues for which the solutions were not obvious to the casual observer. This quickly created roadblocks to achieving success with Grasshopper. I found this course on the Food4Rhino site and contacted Thomas regarding applicability to other than architectural applications.
This course, despite being oriented toward architectural applications, provides principles that are universally applicable and was absolutely worth working through. The first module on Grasshopper data structures provided the primary "aha" moment to making this tool useful and approachable. The remaining modules provide excellent instruction for utilizing the tool and fundamental principles that can be extended to multiple applications. One example of this was the Data Trees design exercise. While the exercise applied fins to buildings; I saw the application to small, decorative 3D printed boxes and have adapted the script for boxes and succulent containers and am planning to apply it to decorative 3D printed lidded boxes as well. The rest of the course was equally useful and I will be applying the principles learned to future design ideas. The only negative thing I would say is that one should not believe the 20 to 25 minute estimate for doing the design exercises. If one wants to truly learn the principles behind those exercises (and probably play a bit with the features and explore various approaches), expect to spend several hours for each of those exercises -- the time spent is well worth the investment.
Having worked through this course, I now feel that I have progressed from being "familiar" with Grasshopper and its features to being competent with Grasshopper. Becoming proficient is something that will require additional direct use and application of the tool over a period of time. You just can't shortcut the requirement for "stick time" with a tool to become proficient at using it but courses like this get you to the point where you are able to effectively acquire that stick time.
Most definitely worthwhile and I would do this again with no hesitation. Highly recommend.
Grasshopper Pro Review; want to build your own scripts?
Grasshopper Pro proved to be a very detailed companion, and definitely more user friendly to the famed "AAD algorithms aided design" that anyone interested in learning grasshopper has probably read at some stage.
The course is good at explaining the foundation and logic behind computational thinking, providing content that is well paced with useful visuals, examples and assignments to help develop your knowledge.
Would recommend for beginners and those looking to re-learn or are struggling with the concept of data trees, grafting and longest list mapping.
Best comprehensive Grasshopper course
If you want to learn Grasshopper, or you already started on your own - then this is definitely the course you should follow to take the next steps!
The lessons in the course are very practical, very well structured in chapters. They are easy to comprehend without being overly simple.
However, what is really important, they are not just examples being rehearsed for you. Thomas has a very straightforward way of explaining how each script is set up and how each part is actually working in the sense of manipulating and controlling your data and geometry.
The best thing is that Thomas is teaching how to analyse and structure the design goals you want to achieve before starting the script. This is what he calls 'Think in Data' and is probably one of the most important lessons in terms of understanding GH.
From an architect to architects
What sets Grasshopper Pro apart isn’t just that it was crafted by an architect for architects, but that it offers a solid, foundational starting point for anyone beginning their parametric design journey. It provides a really well-structured introduction to computational thinking, blended together with the design process to lay a groundwork that would be difficult to achieve on your own. For anyone serious about evolving their design approach, this is an ideal start to an inspiring learning journey. Not to mention the price: for such a comprehensive and well-structured program, the pricing is incredibly affordable, making it accessible to architects at all stages of their careers.
HIGHLY AND STRONGLY RECOMMENDED
This grasshopper course by MOST definit is the best course I've attended!!!
I had been trying to study GH from different youtube channels but I could never really understand as deep as now , as I went through the videos I could get the logic in this software more and more, also the explanation is so well organized and so clear, Thomas is sush a helpful instructor and always present whenever I have any questions , the answer is always well explained in details and in screenshots too, I can feel the enormous difference between before and after the course simply because Thomas here is teaching us how to think instead of just memorising alot of steps, I feel much confident building my own scripts now and reaching the exact same results in different ways which is something I couldn't really do a couple of months ago, the videos in general are so enjoyable, as you move forward you feel how creative you can get by everything you've learnt and you start getting all this flow of ideas
if anything really I just hope there would be more parts for the course to cover more areas
An amazing course !
This is a very complete course. The instructor is fantastic. He is very clear explaining core grasshopper concepts. I felt I advanced a lot and can now jump into grasshopper without fear!
Can’t wait to continue my grasshopper journey! If anything I would suggest the instructor to make a second course for advanced users and strategies :)
