They were SO helpful

I am going to buck the trend here because I think people only leave reviews when they have had a bad experience?.
I have now had to deal with HMRC 3 times recently for a death in the family and also my e bay income.
On all 3 occasions they have gone above and beyond and have been amazing.
Phone answered very quickly and e mails replied to quickly.
Special thanks to Robert and Daniel.

I got through once before and they said they'd sorted it and send me a letter with new details... guess what letter never arrived... honestly they drive me insane!! But they're quick enough to come after you for money. Disgusting service, should be abolished!!! Hate this stupid system!!!

Shocking Incompetence and Zero Accountability from HMRC

My issue with HMRC has been ongoing for over 8 months with no resolution and no one taking responsibility. I had to escalate the matter to my MP and even write to the First Permanent Secretary and Chief Executive just to get a response — and the issue is still not resolved.

HMRC seems to be run by people who can only follow rigid desktop procedures with no ability to think critically or take ownership. They don’t accept emails, and any letters sent are rerouted through a Royal Mail depot in the Midlands to be scanned and forwarded, which delays everything further.

Despite submitting an online complaint, I’m still waiting for it to be acknowledged. It’s ironic how quickly HMRC chases the public for money, yet when they make mistakes, they move at a glacial pace. Absolutely disgraceful.

HMRC: 10 Years, No Job, No Refund – Just Lies and Excuses

Was owed an £800 tax refund. HMRC refused it, claiming I didn’t submit a tax return in 2015 — nearly 10 years ago — even though I didn’t even work that year. No job, no income, nothing to declare. What exactly was I meant to file — a blank sheet?

Now they’re axing fuel allowances for disabled people while MPs swan around with multiple homes, chauffeurs, and gold-plated pensions. There are more disabled people being born than ever, yet the help’s vanishing — but the luxury perks for politicians just keep growing.

This system isn’t broken. It’s bent. Bent as a nine bob note. HMRC and the government are running a legal scam with a straight face.

Double Standards whilst HMRC benefit from the capital !

A decade ago I owed money to HMRC. I was treated with contempt and received numerous threatening phone calls, threatening letters and home visits from their ‘goons’ who on one occasion threatened to remove my car which was essential for my work ?!
Since 2023 HMRC have refused to refund an overpayment of personal tax. Despite regular prompting from my accountant, tax refunds for 2023 and 2024 remain unpaid. Double Standards me thinks !

Absolutely useless

Absolutely useless, they are so happy with their web site that doesn't work, they don't answer the customer helpline line , their useless digital helper just redirects you to a web site page that doesn't work.

I've worked for 41 years paid NI since 1978 and some how the last three years of that work life I didn't pay full NI contributions.

So my state pension to receive maximum I have to pay money in amounting to over £2500 .

So I paid the first installment, there is no record on my state pension forecast of them ever recieving this and my state pension forecast has not altered .

HMRC expect me to pay more installments without any proof of received payments or without anyone to discuss the issue.

In truth I've worked and paid over 38years of full contributions so how is there a shortfall.

This is a bigger scandal than the post office debacle.

I don't trust HMRC calculation and they can't be contacted and their web site is less than useless.

Absolute scandal that such an important gov department is so poor.

Yours completely disgusted and annoyed

Derek Fraser.

Try again...

I have called HMRC several times recently, what I have found is that it seems 50/50 as to whether you have someone helpful & knowledgeable answer your call or not. If you get someone helpful, they are very good, if someone answers who can't even hold the phone to their mouth, is clearly not able to form any rapport with you and has English language challenges, hang up and try again.

Disgusting 'service' -I can't give them zero

For some reason only know to themselves they closed my company PAYE account, and created a new one, the moey payed to the original a/c is not showing on the new a/c. Trying to phone and sort it, I've spent hours on the phone the last call cost £33 and nothing said has been done.

Trying again today, after the unhelpful digital asistant decides it can't put you through to an operator as they are busy and cuts you off 😣😣

If that's not bad enough the industrial action is now into MAY - WTF is going on, they would be the first to chase for money

Fed up

You have purposefully designed a system to make it impossible for people outside the UK to confirm their identity for a tax refund. You also make it difficult to contact customer representatives with long waiting times. You're an absolute shitshow and only a revolution can bring you down.

Well if I could give no stars I would. What has happened to HMRC, 5 years ago they were one of the best organisations to deal with, now they are absolutely abysmal. I will not go in to details, as that would be boring. Spleen vented. Thanks

Absolutely useless call centre

Absolutely useless call centre. Mixes up the tax years, unable to provide the required information yet becoming snappy and rude trying to educate us. A disgrace on public money. At least you had the chat option back in the days and you did not have to wait 90 minutes to talk to someone who didn’t wake up well in the morning.

I have been tryig to access my account…

I have been tryig to access my account for a year. But I can't cause my phone is changed n I can't get access code, when I ask trough email I get code putting in password changed wich I don't remember, so I go forgot password, they asking me user ID which I put then they sending code to my old phone. Spoke on the phone after 45 min wait , they told me that they can't help.
Can't do self assessment cos can't sign in.
Useless people workes there, there is no chance I can submit self assessment again. It is should of been easier , everything I did keep turning to sending code to my old number.
Horrible design, people seems have no idea about helping people at all.!!!!

Absolutely shocking service

Absolutely shocking service! When you finally get through after waiting on the phone- the people on the phone aren’t interested in helping you! The whole system is backwards in coming forward. You have all someone’s data regarding employment via the app/ tax info and still have to provide it. Quick to take your money- not quick in helping understanding why they are! The information is always complicated and over detailed.

Shocking service

Received x2 letters within a week of each other both having different information . Attempts made to contact HMRC to speak to someone to explain . First 2 phone calls after going through a number of questions taking approx 5 mins was told busy and unable to take the call and to phone back later. On the third attempt again a number of questions but this time was informed the wait time was around 30 mins. I was hold for one hour and 5 mins before I had to hang up to leave for an appointment . Absolutely shocking to say the least and I know they say there is plenty of useful information online but tax is not the most simplistic of things to understand in general and would make so much of a difference being able to speak to someone in person.
