I worked with Hatton James during my redundancy process and settlement agreement.

There were some helpful points in the advice, and the solicitor, Chris, appeared to have knowledge of the settlement agreement process. However, overall I found the experience disappointing.

During a very stressful period, I sometimes found it difficult to reach my lawyer and felt that responses to my questions by email were often limited. I also did not feel I received clear enough practical guidance on how to respond to the company’s actions during the redundancy process. When I asked for guidance from time to time, I did not always receive the level of response I had hoped for.

One example of this was when the final settlement agreement was close to being signed. Before signing, I did not feel that the details of the agreement were properly discussed with me. I was advised to read it and sign, but as someone without legal training, I found this challenging and felt quite alone in the process. After reading the agreement myself and obtaining separate help from another lawyer, I signed and concluded the matter.

A particular concern for me was the additional cost relating to the possible removal of restrictive covenants. My understanding at the outset was that this issue would be dealt with as part of the process. The company did not agree to remove the restrictive covenants, and they remained in place. Despite this, the final amount I was charged was significantly higher than the initial figure I had been given.

I understand that a solicitor cannot guarantee the other side’s agreement. However, from my perspective, it was disappointing to pay substantially more than I had initially expected for an issue that was not ultimately resolved in the way I had hoped.

Unfortunately, I did not feel I received the level of guidance, support, or responsiveness from Hatton James that I needed during such a difficult and stressful period.

Overall, based on my personal experience, I would not recommend Hatton James.

Overall, I had a good experience. Gareth handled my case and was professional, responsive, and reliable throughout the process.

My settlement agreement was successfully finalized and signed, and I appreciated having a legal professional by my side during negotiations with my employer. It gave me confidence and reassurance throughout the process.

That said, in my particular case I only needed limited legal support, so I felt the fee quoted was a little on the expensive side for the level of assistance I required. Nevertheless, the service was professional and achieved the outcome I was looking for.
