Great Expectations

So....... at 6am this morning, whilst grabbing my 15 mins of social media catch up time, I quite innocently, decided to see if I could find a West Indian bakery other than the one I currently order from on-line, who might sell Black/Fruit/Rum Cake. My web search brought up some companies that I had not heard of before including your own. I did some reading and my search informed me that Harrison & Griffiths had a Rum Cake on sale in Aldi. Now, Aldi is not one of my regular food shop stores but there is one less than a 5 minute drive away from home and I decided that I would pop in real quick as soon as they opened the store and then get back home to work. I had no expectations of the store having any as I felt that my current demographic location would have no interest in stocking this item. I went in with my screenshot in hand, approached the first member of staff that I saw and waited for a blank look. 'Oh yes, the Rum Cake' she said and led me to where there were 6 left. Without thinking, I grabbed all six boxes, paid and left. I have just finished work for the day and asked my daughter to go get us some cake as I couldn't take the suspense any longer. Well....... First of all, the smell is DIVINE and brings back so many memories and then the taste and texture ...Mwaaaaah! I am so glad that I bought the last 6 in the store or I would be kicking myself right now. Unfortunately, my intention to give 4 boxes to some of my friends is no longer an option, they are now all mine but I have shared my find with them via messaging. Well done to you guys and thank you. I wish you continued success and I hope that your products make it on to shop floor and into other stores if that is what you also desire. Health , Wealth and Happiness to you and yours x

After watching the Aldi programme

After watching the Aldi programme, I decided to purchase some cakes direct from Harrison & Griffiths.

I ordered the pineapple cake and the small 4" tin of full strength rum cake. The pineapple cake was very good, but I was very disappointed with the rum cake. Given that the rum cake was £14 and the pineapple cake £5.50, I thought that the rum cake would have tasted so much better than the pineapple cake. I love rum, but the level of rum in the rum cake wasn't quite right. Half of the rum cake was eaten as it was, but the remainder of the cake was eaten hot with custard and it did taste better that way.

The Aldi lady said that the H&G cake was the best cake that she had ever tasted, but I can honestly say that it's not the best cake that I have ever tasted.

So given that the rum cake cost £14 direct from H&G, in my opinion this is very over priced. The empty tin was of no use to me, so it went in the recycling bin.

All in all I was very disappointed because I was expecting a far superior tasting rum cake than what I received. Definitely not the best tasting cake ever and I can honestly say that I will not be purchasing any more.
