Loyal customer lost: $425 pack, no raincover, and "garbage bag" advice

I have been a loyal Gregory user for years, recently investing in a Paragon 50 ($425 CAD) for an upcoming 200 km trek. To my shock, Gregory has phased out the included raincover—an essential piece of gear for serious hikers.
While their support team claims this is to "reduce environmental impact," it feels like a cost-cutting measure disguised as sustainability. For a premium technical pack at this price point, a custom-fitted raincover should be standard to prevent the fabric from soaking up water and adding unnecessary weight during a multi-day expedition.
The most disappointing part? When I raised this with their authorized retailer (MEC Canada), I was officially told to "use a garbage bag inside the pack" as a sufficient alternative. When I shared this insulting recommendation with Gregory’s own customer service, they simply brushed it off, stating they have "no control" over their dealers.
As a hiker who has spent over $2,000 on high-end gear recently, being told to resort to a trash bag for a $425 technical investment is a slap in the face. Gregory used to stand for quality and community; now, it seems they prioritize profit margins over the basic needs and loyalty of their customers.
I chose Gregory for reliability, but after this experience, my next pack will likely be from a brand that actually respects its users' expeditions

Shocking material quality

Shocking material quality - avoid at all costs. The lifetime warranty is a scam. I contacted the customer service team (Jake) and they put my issue down to 'wear and tear'. The materials on the inside are literally peeling off and going all over my luggage, it is material failure from Gregory's manufacturer and nothing to do with wear and tear. Broken zips and seams are wear and tear.
Absolutely hopeless quality and even worse customer service.

Lower quality of materials and service

Lower quality of materials and service. My third pack from Gregory in 25 years. First two took a lot of wear - one is still going strong - but the third was bought in June 2023 and after 6 months a toggle broke. After 11 months a clip holding the chest strap broke. Now in UK trying to get a repair. Complicated and impersonal and I'll have to pay. So much for the guarantee!

Fantastic customer service…

Had fantastic customer service experience. Nothing wrong with the pack but had a problem after year of usage with the valve of the reservoirs. Customer service was fantastic and sorted me out very quick and efficient with free of charge new part!

Bought a backpack from Gregory.com

Bought a backpack from Gregory.com. The belt buckle broke within 2 uses (2 weeks) of having it as I hike once a week. Gregory then sent me 2 buckles telling me I can replace them- well I cannot they are sewn in. Now they want me to pay my own shipping to send the backpack in? After their product failed me. Ha.... Then every email I send back to correspond with the team member helping me bounces back, which I have to restart a whole new inquiry each time. Absolutely ridiculous. I used to be hardcore Gregory fan.

Ripped stitching on shoulder strap of Gregory Stout 60 backpack…

I bought the Gregory Stout 60 backpack for distance hiking, on the strength of its good reviews. Half way round a 5 day hike in the Beara peninsula in May 2022 - my first outing with the Gregory pack - the left shoulder strap stitching ripped as I hoisted the pack onto my back. The load was 12kg, not heavy at all for a 60 litre pack. This left me in the unhappy state of 2 more days on the trail with a weakened pack, not knowing if the strap stitching would hold until the destination. I cannot be bothered to return the pack, will repair it locally, but am surprised that a brand of this stature can produce a backpack whose strap stitching is capable of ripping under conditions of normal use - imagine the consequences of strap failure many days' walk from a town or village.

Fast delivery, no problems

I ordered a daypack from Gregory. I am from Denmark. I wrote to customer service first to ask from where the packs were shipped as I was worried about shipping and customs costs. They replied that it would be sent from Germany, i.e. within the EU. So there would be no issues with customs etc.

I then ordered the daypack and two days later it arrived by UPS (and I was able to track the shipment until it arrived). So all very fast and smooth. No problems whatsoever.
