Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 1,345 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers frequently experienced severe frustration due to unexpected extra charges, hidden booking fees, and steep financial penalties levied for minor or pre-existing vehicle damage upon returning cars. Reviewers also reported feeling heavily pressured by aggressive counter staff into purchasing expensive, mandatory-sounding additional insurance policies and extra services. Conversely, a small portion of people felt that the vehicle collection process was remarkably quick, smooth, and efficient overall. Some reviewers were happy with certain staff members who proved to be particularly accommodating, polite, and genuinely helpful throughout their entire rental visit.

Goldcar Málaga Airport: Holiday Ruined, Deposit Held, Damage Trap at Return

Goldcar Málaga Airport was one of the WORST CAR-RENTAL EXPERIENCE I have ever had; and I've rented cars for 20 years, on 4 continents.

I rented through Jet2 Car Hire, and from the start the service felt poor and dismissive. I was made to wait unnecessarily, the handover was weak, and the car itself was in bad condition — poorly maintained, with strange noises while driving.

The real problem came at return. Goldcar suddenly identified “new” damage that I remain convinced was already on the vehicle when I collected it. The original check-out report recorded only one damage item, but the car’s actual condition was clearly worse. In practice, this means: poor inspection at collection (hence why they hide the car in dark parking spot), incomplete damage record, then surprise damage charges at return (with the checkout now done, surprise-surprise, in broad daylight).
It felt like a classic damage-charge trap.
What made it even worse was the contrast with a separate rental I made directly through goldcar.es immediately afterwards, from the same Málaga Airport location. The treatment was completely different — much better when booked direct, much worse when booked through Jet2. That left me feeling like a second-class customer because I booked through a travel-agent channel.

Goldcar eventually returned the undisputed balance of my deposit, but only after pressure. The damage charge remains, in my view, unfair.

Avoid Goldcar Málaga Airport.
BAD SERVICE, TERRIBLE CAR, DISHONEST HANDOVER PROCESS, and a very unpleasant surprise at the end.

Cowboy Car Rentals

Straight off the bat, the staff were rude like they expected you to know where to stand in their unorganised chaos. Upon arriving at the desk I was faced with a €300 deposit for the car I’d already paid for. Having already been travelling all day, I paid this and was ensured it would be returned, in full, with the return of the car; it wasn’t. The car was returned with full fuel and no damage as per the checklist I received post drop off, however that was all I received. Customer services claimed the charge could have been for the type of car I was given (that I never asked for??) or that I chose to pay an extra €300 but they didn’t actually know, before laughing down the phone and ending the call! Because every tourist would prefer to spend €300 on nothing as opposed to spending it on holiday? Impossible company to reason with and to communicate with after things go wrong. I honestly plead to anyone considering booking with this company to avoid doing so, unless you would like to be even more skint than we all already are.

Very Poor customer service & not willing to listen

This is our experience with Goldcar,Good afternoon, Mr Goatley & I recently rented a vehicle from your company, details of which are below. The booking was done online & paid 222.94 euros. Mr Goatley had requested an automatic vehicle but for some reason on the booking it came out as a manual.

Mr Goatley then contacted yourselves & explained what had happened & was told not to worry as this can be resolved when we come to pick up the car at Malaga Airport.

when we arrived at the airport & went to pick the car we were told that the only automatic car they had was a BYD ATTO 2 which was a much bigger car then we wanted & it cost us another 158 euros which in our opinon was absoulety extortionate price. We were told that this was the only automatic they had, we were not pleased one bit & your customer service agent was extremerly unhelpful, both of us complained but he was adement that this was the only vehicle which was availble as an auto.

We both feel that we have been treated very badly as the agent just seemed to want to get rid of out the door. I have looked at other reviews on Trustpliot & there are similar instances where staff just want you out of the office so they can deal with other people.

The other bad practice is your staff do not escort you to the vehicle to check it over to make sure there is no damage & to make sure you are happy the controls, we weren't even told that it was a hybrid car.

We are looking for a refund of the extra charge of 158 euros & look forward to your response to this matter as we told we could change the vehicle on arrival at the airport.

Con-artists disguised as a rental company

One star is too much.. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY!
We had a car reservated. The wiating time to get someone to attend us was long, 11 counters but just few workers.
Finally after 45-60 minutes of waiting we got to the counter. Long story short: They said that the car that we had rented is too small for us. That we would need to upgrade the class. The problem was the luggage that we had. They were saying that we can't put the luggage on rear seat because the police would give us fine for that. The worker tried to get us to cancel the reservation and take one with double price. I wanted to take the small car and take my risk, but he basically denied our request.
So we left the place without any car because we didn't want to pay double what we paid already. Now I'm fighting to get my money back from the reservation.
Ps. Is not illegal to have luggage is on backseat if is segured with seatbelt.

Maybe this was best result, I would imagine that they would have charged us after the rent for damages etc.

DON'T USE THIS COMPANY. THE PRICES ARE NOT CORRECT AND THEY USE ANY REASON TO MAKE YOU PAY MORE.

The worst car rental agency—I advise…

The worst car rental agency—I advise against renting from them. They mislead people, do not accept the letter "Ł," and are unhelpful when it comes to recovering money; on the contrary, they try to pressure you into renting other cars without offering a refund for the previous one.

You don't get the car you've booked.

You don't get the car you've booked.

I've booked Renault Arkana, Ford Kuga Citroen DS4 (Group L) car. On arrival, not only the car was not available, but staff pretended like nothing happened and didn't acknowledge that they don't have a car in a group I booked. They just passed me keys to Seal Leon like nothing happened. No asking if it's OK, no discussion of partial refund and no upgrade as other car rentals did in the past when I faced similar situations.

If you choose to go with them, make sure you actually get what you paid for. It took a lot of talking and complaining to make them finally "kindly" do something about it.

The "best" they had on the lot at the time was Cupra Leon Sportstourer 1.5 TSI, this wasn't offered by them, I had point it out just so we could actually fit our bags.

All in all I rent a lot and this was a really poor experience.

SCAMERS!

SCAMERS!! SCAMERS!! Avoid at all costs. Horrendous company, horrendous experience. I always use a reputable comparison site for my car hire, and until this trip I've always had a great experience. My trip was for a week to Mallorca (11th to 18 th August 2026) and I found a great car hire deal for the week for €131, ulimited milage and petrol Full to Full. Considering my dates were high season & coincided with the total eclispe, this was a great deal. I reserved it immediately, by paying a small deposit of around €2.35 with the remaining rental balance of €128.65 to be paid at the rental desk on arrival. I have rented cars in Spain many, many times, so am aware that I can purchase my own Excess Insurance cover, which I've always done, and am NOT obliged to purchase any additional Insurance from the rental company. In this instance, I know that I must have a security/excess deposit pre-aurhoslrised on my credit card, which is then released back to me, when the car is returned undamaged.
Well, when I arrived and presented my booking voucher which confirmed my balance to pay was €128.65, the GOLDCAR representative insisted that I MUST purchase their own Insurance product (rubbish!), and the price I needed to pay was over €400. I refused to pay this, explaining that I had my own insurance, that I was NOT obliged to buy their own and they my rental balance to pay them was €128.65. She then lied to me, telling me that Spanish Law required me to buy their insurance, that it was mandatory (again rubbish) and GOLDCAR didn't accept any other Insurance. She then told me that I either paid the ridiculous price she wanted (over €400) or I could "cancel the booking and leave, and good luck to me trying to rebook with any other rental company!!"
This is a SCAM, trying to force customers to pay more money than they should. AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!
The travel company who I made the booking via, was of no use when I tried to complain to them (one of the orange branded companies, of which there are several). Shame on them!

Avoid, it should be called a scamcar!
According to their terms and conditions the do accept Debit card, BUT
on the desk the agent when saw my debit card said no only credit card call your rental agency to change!
That’s not all i was told if I don’t pay €300 insurance there’s no any coverage and basically not insured! This never mentioned in their terms and conditions
And she said they keep €14000 for a month because it will be investigated for the whole month!
Also the man next to me was asked to pay x amount a Airport tax!!
I had to open a complaint case with Ryan Air and getting a refund
NEVER again and I will NOT recommend this supplier

**A very uncomfortable experience — be extremely careful**

I have just returned a Goldcar rental in Spain and, unfortunately, the experience left me very uncomfortable.

At collection, I was put under considerable pressure to take Goldcar’s additional excess insurance. The potential consequences of not taking it were explained at length, despite me making it clear that I already had my own cover. I was also strongly encouraged to upgrade the car because I was told the car I had booked was probably too small for me. I declined both.

The real concern came when I returned the car.

The member of staff carried out an extremely detailed inspection using a strong spotlight and identified what he described as scratch/damage. This was an  incredibly minor marks that I could barely see with the naked eye. In fact, when I rubbed the area with my hand, the mark essentially disappeared and the bogus claim also disappeared!

I found the whole process very poor, particularly given the pressure around taking the additional insurance at the start of the rental.

I have hired cars many times and understand that genuine damage needs to be dealt with. But when a company is highlighting marks that are barely visible under normal conditions, and which can be rubbed away, it leaves you questioning the way the inspection process is being conducted.

My advice to anyone using Goldcar: **photograph and video the entire car before you drive away, make sure every existing mark is recorded, and be very careful about the additional insurance and the potential excess.**

Based on this experience, I would not use Goldcar again.

I dont say this lightly - scam

I dont say this lightly, but Gold Car are essentially a scam. To be fair the car was great, but that didnt quite add up for the price so I should have known......everything else....never again. (I couldn't even find the car as it was parked in the wrong bay).
Anyway, my spider-sense was triggered by the aggressive upsell of 'full-cover' insurance at over £100 extra on top of the rental, for 2 days - I could hire a decent car from a big brand for that. Then it triggered again when the existing damages report showed damage I couldn't see, let alone shows up on any photos under the car park glare. I was extremely careful both driving and where I left it parked, but obviously they found new damage on return. I am certain this is not new damage, but rather the existing damage showing up with road dirt from driving....regardless, everyone who brought a car back whilst I was there had the same. "New" damages reported. The so called damage I have been charged for doesn't show up in either the before or after photos, so I'll be using a section-75 claim for fraudulent charges.
There are lots of other rentals available....chose any of the others. I had a great experience with Europcar at Alicante previously.

Excellent support when my family really needed it

We had an excellent experience with Goldcar at Madrid Airport on 8 August 2026.

My two sons and I arrived at the airport and unexpectedly found ourselves without the rental car we had previously booked through another company. It was a very stressful situation for all of us: we were at the beginning of our family trip, without a car, and finding a suitable last-minute alternative was proving extremely difficult.

Fortunately, we met Daniele, a Goldcar employee who immediately understood our situation and showed exceptional patience, professionalism and willingness to help.

He listened carefully, took the time to understand what had happened and actively worked to find the best possible solution for me and my family. His attitude was not only professional, but also genuinely supportive and proactive.

Thanks to his help, Goldcar was able to provide us with a suitable car for our entire stay, with an excellent balance between quality and price, together with outstanding customer service.

What impressed me most was the human side of the assistance. Daniele did not simply process another rental: he understood that he was helping a family who had unexpectedly found themselves in a difficult situation far from home, and he made a real effort to find a solution for us.

In a moment when my family and I genuinely needed help, Goldcar provided exactly what good customer service should offer: professionalism, patience, proactiveness, supportiveness and a genuine willingness to help.

A special thank you to Daniele. His help made a huge difference for all three of us and allowed our family trip to start despite a very difficult situation.

Based on this experience, I would definitely recommend Goldcar.

Disgraceful - avoid

Absolutely disgraceful practices afoot here.

Existing damage at collection* - all photographed on the day - attributed to us when we returned the car. Dispute still ongoing despite already providing photographic proof damage already existed. “Updated damage map” not actually updated to include this “new” damage, so will clearly be charged to the next renter as well when they return the vehicle.

*I even went in on the day of collection to add the extra damage I’d identified and was reassured by the desk agent that it didn’t need adding to their paperwork as wasn’t serious enough!

They look cheaper at the outset, but when they take hundreds of euros off you for damage you didn’t cause, they’ll be more expensive

Car was pretty filthy on collection

Express pickup also a waste of money. You’ll still have to wait in the same queue as everyone else…

Avoid
