Car with defective clutch
Car with defective clutch – returned immediately
I rented a car from Funchal Drive in Madeira on March 15, 2026.
Immediately after leaving the office I noticed the clutch was extremely worn out. The car had a strong burning clutch smell and the engine revved without proper acceleration. Considering the steep roads in Madeira, this made the vehicle unsafe to drive.
I returned to the office immediately and requested a replacement vehicle. Instead of offering another car, the staff insisted the vehicle was normal and refused to acknowledge the issue.
Because I did not feel safe driving the car, I returned it right away. According to the return document, the vehicle was returned after only 11 km and less than one hour after pickup.
At first they also tried to make us sign a document stating that we were voluntarily cancelling the rental.
I am currently requesting a cancellation confirmation so the booking platform can process the refund for the reservation and the insurance purchased with the booking.
I hope the company resolves this situation fairly.
