Flatmates.com.au does work OK

Flatmates.com.au does work OK. The site is easy to use, suggests how to write the ad, and I have always had leads and found my flatmate. However, I have found flatmates using the site to be uncontrolled / unsupervised / unmanaged leading a huge waste of my time as someone offering house sharing.
Despite having "female only", "no smoking" and "no couples" ticked on my ad, I was messaged by 7 men - none of whom had listed profiles on the site. This is starting to border on dangerous. One was a professed school boy mucking about. There was the 18 yr old smoker who wanted to live near his girlfriend. The young couple still living in their family with "no peace or privacy." 2 men spoke to me as if I was running a boarding house and would provide everything and they would move in tomorrow. One chap wanted a sunroom. I said nope - but I understand what you mean, my neighbour has one. So, he asked, could I go and ask the neighbour if he could move into their house? I ignored him, to have him write 2 weeks later asking how I got on asking the neighbour on his behalf. The man who was too busy to visit and sent one of his employees over instead for the viewing. The only man who contacted me with a listing, visited the house, was very polite, took the room and 3 weeks later did a runner whilst I was in the other room - leaving a pile of stuff behind. Couldn't come and say "I've decided to leave". Thank goodness for a bond.
Like ..... who interacts like this? Why would I invite you into my home, let alone live in my home?
I wrote to 5 women who advertised profiles on the site. only 1 replied and she moved in! The other 4 - nothing.
Until Flatmates.com.au starts to work with the seekers to have sensible policies and monitors and tracks what people are doing I will be guarded and only partially mark them. They esp. need to understand they are more than a software company - they allow people to be unlisted but have the ability to contact others - that is dangerous for the unwary and I wish Flatmates would have more controlling structures in place.

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for taking the time to let us know your thoughts above. We really appreciate hearing our members’ feedback.

We will answer your statements in order:

1. Anyone who contacts you via the site is a registered member and they have undergone the same verification process as you. However, not all members will have a public profile about themselves. Some of these members may have just signed up and verified an account to contact you, so they may not know about a profile until they’ve sent their first message. Many members also have their own personal reasons for not wanting their listing public. You can always reply to these members through the messaging system and ask them to provide more information or to create a person listing.

We do ask you to demonstrate caution and to never meet a person without calling them first and never let someone move into your property who you haven’t met.

2. You've received messages from people who may not fit all of your search criteria, as some house holders will take on a new flatmate who matches most of their search criteria, if they can't find someone who matches all of their search criteria.

3. If you need some help resolving disputes, please have a look at our how-to guide on dispute resolution for some tips https://flatmates.com.au/info/resolving-disputes

You can also report a member by clicking on the three dots in your message chat with the member and selecting "report this member." Alternatively, you can visit their listing page and select "Report this listing" on the right hand side. This will let a member of our Moderation Team know to review the member's account.

If you feel like you need further help, please have a look at the legal guides on our site. This link will take you to the start of an extensive list of legal support articles on our site https://flatmates.com.au/info/legal-introduction

If you would like to discuss further, please feel free to email us at support@flatmates.com.au

We wish you all the best,

The worst site with terrible customer…

The worst site with terrible customer service. Most people don’t reply. There’s no incentive for the users to reply to each other and when I tried to raise this they were very dismissive. The photos that appear very hard to see. The format is cluttered. The customer service is bizarre. I literally got a user message me, telling me to sneak someone into the country during quarantine and, when I didn’t reply, to smell his “ridunculous ass” and something to do with burritos. Customer service called this a tenancy dispute? He wasn’t a tenant? Then they said his messages were normal and totally fine and he was genuine and this was just a “dispute”. Even though I never replied to these bizarre messages. Very very expensive and very low yield in finding a flatmate

Help me speak to someone please

I have used Flatmates successfully so it has helped me in the past but this time i have messaged over a dozen people with no reply and that seems odd so I tried to find a contact number or email and there is none. What company does not give you a chance to contact them and if there is one it is hidden well enough for me to not find it .... Can you please help Cheers Karen :-/

Paywall

The site prevents you from messaging certain people (for me it happened to be the two places I most wanted to see) without buying a subscription. They already have ads so not sure why this is necessary. Haven't tried it on desktop but the mobile version of the site is clunky but does the job I guess.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your review.

Our site is free to use but we do have a number of paid upgrades members can choose from if they wish. Upgrading will quicken up a member's search and give them greater access to the site.

As a free member, you will only be able to contact listings labeled "Free to Message". Any listing labeled "Early Bird", is only contactable by upgraded members.

On a Free account, your listing is set to "Early Bird" for the first 14 days. During this period, only upgraded members can contact you.

Other Free Members will not be able to contact your listing during the Early Bird period. Any Free Member who does contact you during this period, will have their messages held until your listing becomes Free to Message or if you upgrade, whichever is soonest.

Plans including the Free Plan are explained and shown when you create your listing. There is also an Early Bird explainer on every Early Bird listing on the site, including yours.

Upgrading your account will bypass these restrictions and give you full access to the website. Our current plans can be viewed here: https://flatmates.com.au/info/why-upgrade

Pretty good site

Pretty good site, found a few flatmates through them. Would be better if they did not allow people to advertise rooms without bills included, as, firstly, this is illegal, & secondly, does not present a level playing field. Someone may think a room advertised at $180 per week is better value than one advertised at $210, but if the former does not include bills, & the latter does, the latter is the best value.. unfortunately most people are not bright enough to work that out & I have to advertise my room at a lower rate than I would really like to.

Hi Trent,

Thanks for your review.

We do have an option within our search filters that allows members to be shown properties that have “bills included” within the advertised rental price. You will find this by selecting on the "filters" box in the search bar once you have started your search for properties in your area. Many members will also post their rental price on their listing and then in their description they may state how the bills are split.

As Flatmates is a peer-to-peer listing site to help members find share accomodation it is usually expected that all flatmates will share the cost of the house. Every share house is different, so it really is up to the members of the house to come to an agreement together, but people searching for accommodation should expect to pay bills along with their rent. We have a stack of resources on the site to help members with disputes or tips on how to split the bills evenly.

We have posted some links below to help you out.:

Didn't get what I paid for

I got zero hits after 2 weeks on my "live" listing. After checking, it actually wasn't listed despite the LIVE status. I tried to contact customer service, which was difficult (no one to call) and provided very succinct information regarding the issue. I got a generic email back which did not address any of these issues. I strongly recommend flatmatefinders.com.au as I've had a MUCH better experience with them!

Hi Jess,

Thank you for your message and we’re sorry you’re having trouble.

We can see that you have two accounts on the site with the same phone number. Please note that a mobile number can only be verified on one account at any one time. This is causing your accounts (and therefore your listing) to be continuously pulled into moderation.

In light of the fact that your listing was live but you had created duplicate accounts (thus causing the constant moderation of your accounts and listings), we'd appreciate it if you were able to review your above review of our business. If you have any further questions about this, please let us know.

We have sent you an email with some next steps. We hope for a speedy resolution.

All the best,
